Hijab Wearing Muslim Woman To Appear On Playboy Magazine

A Muslim-American journalist Noor Tagouri will appear in Playboy magazine’s October issue wearing a hijab, a decision that has elicited praise in some quarters and provoked condemnation in others.

She’ll appear alongside a sex activist, a comedian and novelist as part of the magazine’s “Renegade” series, which highlights people who have “risked it all — even their lives — to do what they love.”
Earlier this year, Playboy changed directions, enacting a several changes, the biggest of which was to do away with fully nude photos.
Tagouri, a 22-year-old journalist who reports for Newsy, appears in the issue clad in black jeans, Converse sneakers, a leather jacket and of course, her head covered.

Muslim Teen Defies Tradition To Become First Hijab-Wearing Ballerina

With a dream of becoming the first hijab-wearing Muslim ballerina, 14-year-old Stephanie Kurlow recently launched a fundraising page in the hopes of pulling together more than $7,000 so she can get her certification to open a performing arts program in her native Sydney because, she has said, “I don’t want certain people who are discriminatory to hold anyone back from achieving their dreams and being unique.”

Her plans, as detailed on her LaunchGood.com fundraiser page, are as passionate as her pirouettes. “I plan on bringing the world together by becoming the very first Muslim ballerina so that I can inspire so many other people to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams,” Kurlow wrote. “My dream is to train in a full-time ballet school catered for aspiring young girls who want to train 30-45 hours a week so they can become a professional ballerina.”

Meet Hijarbie, The Hijab-Wearing Barbie By A Nigerian

Barbie is having a moment right now, evolving with new body shapes and blowing up on Instagram.

But one young woman, 24-year-old Haneefah Adam of Nigeria, wasn’t seeing any of these Barbies dressed in the same way she did — wearing modest clothing that covers the body. So, two months ago, she started her own account, called @hijarbie.

In interviews with Mic and BuzzFeed, Adam explained that she makes the clothes for the Barbie dolls herself. The designs are often inspired by looks worn by popular Muslim fashion bloggers.

As chic and lovely as Hijarbie’s outfits are, the best part about the whole thing is what Adam hopes to accomplish through her Instagram account.

“I want [girls] to be inspired — this is about having an alternative and creating an awareness of having toys that adopts your religion and culture and in your own likeness, which at the end of the day, leads to an improvement in self-esteem,” she told Mic.
