Kogi traditional ruler kidnapped

Some unknown gunmen have abducted a traditional ruler in Kogi, a family source said in Lokoja on Sunday.

The monarch, the Ohi of Ajaokuta, whose name was given Isah Achuja, was returning from Lokoja, the state capital, on Saturday when his vehicle was intercepted on the Lokoja-Ajaokuta road at gunpoint and the ruler taken to an unknown destination.

A member of the royal family, who did not want his name in print, told journalists that an aide to the traditional ruler and his driver narrowly escaped being hit by the bullets of the abductors.

He said the abductors had already contacted the family and demanded a N20 million ransom.
Contacted by the News Agency of Nigeria, the State Police Command’s spokesman, Williams Aya, said the incident had not been reported to the command.

He, however, promised that police would swing into action in a bid to rescue the monarch as soon as the details of the abduction were available.

Gunmen Shoot Commissioner, “Kidnap” Council Chairman

Suspected armed robbers have shot dead Sargwak Wazhi, a former commissioner who served in the administration of Jonah Jang in Plateau State.

The armed persons also injured the victim’s driver and whisked away a serving transition council chairman of Langtang South Local Government Area, Nicholas Vongsing.

A witness told newsmen on Friday that the incident occurred Thursday night along Mangu Barkinladi road.

Our source, a senior staff of Langtang South Local Government pleaded not to be named because was not authorised to speak on the incident. He, however, explained via telephone interview that the suspected robbers opened fire on the vehicle of the former commissioner, which had Mr. Vongsing as one of the passengers.

“The incident occurred last night (Thursday) at about 7:45 p.m. along Mangu/Barkinladi bypass. Honourable Nicholas Vongsing, our council chairman, was in the car with Honourable Sargwak Wazhi.

“The robbers shot at the car, killed Hon Sargwak Wazhi; his driver was also shot, but he didn’t die. When we arrived the scene, we didn’t see Honourable Nicholas Vongsing, the robbers had left with him.”

Our source explained further that “both Sargwak Wazhi and his driver were taken to the General hospital in Mangu, where he was confirmed dead.”
“This morning, the driver have been referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH, for more medical attention.

“But, for Nicholas Vongsing, till now that I’m taking with you, none of us has heard from him, all of us are worried.”

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police in Plateau State, Terna Tyopev, said the command had not been briefed on the development, but would investigate it.

The victims were said to be returning from an official function held at the southern zone of the state, where more than 30 communities from six council areas agreed to end years of hostilities, which led to the death of hundreds of people and destroyed property worth millions.

The reconciliatory meeting attended by Governor Simon Lalong was organised by the Geneva, Switzerland-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, HD.

Gunmen Abduct Ex-Presidential Candidate, Demand N40m Ransom

Less than 24 hours to the Kogi State supplementary governorship election, the National Chairman of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria and the presidential candidate of the party in the 2015 general election, Alhaji Gani Galadima has been kidnapped by gunmen.

Galadima, who is the Deputy National Chairman of I tear-Party Advisory Council was kidnapped on Fridaymorning in Osara village after Obajana in Kogi State on his way to attend the burial of his elder brother in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The National Chairman of IPAC and Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance, Chief Peter Ameh, who confirmed the abduction in an interview with our correspondent, said the kidnappers called him on the telephone and demanded N40m.
“Alhaji Gani Galadima, was kidnapped this (Friday) morning in Osara village after Obajana. He was traveling to his village to attend the burial of his elder brother in Ilorin, Kwara State. I have reported the matter to the police,” Ameh said.
When contacted the spokesperson for Kogi State Police Command, Mr. Ovye Williams, confirmed the incident.
Williams, an Assistant Superintendent of Police said, “The report has been lodged with us over the abduction of the politician. We are on top of the situation. I’m trying to get in touch with the DPO of the area for necessary action.”
Galadima was among five of the 14 presidential candidates who, along with their parties, signed a statement urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to postpone the 2015 elections to a more appropriate date.

The political parties, had in a resolution calling for the postponement, claimed to have “observed some dangerous trends, which if not checked may negatively and adversely affect our democracy.”

The parties which hinged their call for the postponement on security, distribution of PVCs and people deserting their residences for their villages, had also threatened to boycott the elections if their position was not respected.
