Adamawa Workers Protest, Demand Removal Of Some Govt. Officials

Civil servants in Adamawa on Tuesday staged a protest in front of the Government House Yola calling for the removal of three government officials from office. The protesters, led by the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Dauda Maina, shut the entrance to government house for several hours.

They were demanding for the sacking of the Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Agency, Dr Abdullahi Belel. They also demanded for the sacking of the Executive Secretary Adamawa State Post Primary School Board, Mallam Abdullahi Jingi and the General Manager of Adamawa State Transport Company, Mr Ahmed Nyako.

Maina said that the call for the sack of the affected persons was based on their anti workers stance. He said that the affected person where responsible for causing friction between workers and the government. He alleged that the on-going health workers strike in the state was caused by the executive chairman of the state primary healthcare agency, Dr Abdullahi Belel.

Ghanaian President Bans First Class Travel For Public Officials

In a renewed effort to cut wasteful spending,Ghana’s President John Mahama has banned public officials from first class air travel

The government said on Tuesday that the ban has come into effect as the country implements an IMF aid deal to revive state finances.

The presidency issued the directive this week asking all ministers and other top officials
to avoid “unwarranted” foreign trips on the public purse, Communications Minister Edward Omane Boamah told media.

Finance Minister Seth Terkper told Reuters on Tuesday the cabinet is also discussing a financial accountability bill which would impose penalties such as dismissal or jail time for public officials who are found to violate it.
The schedule would impose penalties such as dismissal or jail time for public officials who are found to violate it.

“It is expected to be clear enough to enable the general public to see malfeasance if there is any and hold the agency involved accountable,” he added.

Tanzanian Govt Officials Jailed For Lateness

Six government officials in Tanzania were jailed this week after turning up late for a meeting, reports said Friday, amid a government campaign to tighten standards and tackle corruption.

“The officials spent six hours in custody following the order by the district commissioner,” the Uhuru newspaper reported Friday, in an editorial praising the move.

“They showed up two hours earlier on the following day,” it added.

The local government official in a suburb of the main city Dar es Salaam ordered his six colleagues be locked up after they turned up over three hours late for a meeting he had called at 8:00 am about land disputes.

The commissioner reportedly said the tardiness of the public servants was “irresponsible.”

ICPC Nabs 2 Top Government Officials

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) yesterday arrested two top government officials over allegations of corruption.

A grey Toyota camry car was sighted conveying the arrested officials driving into the premises of the ICPC headquarters yesterday, and the ICPC officers quickly moved the men, who were both handcuffed together, into the cell.

All efforts to find out who the arrested officials were proved abortive as the two men, who were wearing black and grey suits, were shaded from security operatives at the gate and at the reception, while the men shaded their faces with their other hands.

Upon inquiry, the ICPC officers refused to comment on the identities of the arrested men and the nature of their crime.

However, one of the officers, who pleaded anonymity, said that they were among some top government officials, who had fraudulently converted public funds to their personal use.

Despite the huge tax payers’ money being expended on the acquisition and installation of traffic lights in strategic junctions within FCT to forestall traffic orderliness as well as enhance easy movement of motorists, both private and commercial vehicles owners as well as public office holders in the city, have cultivated the habit of violating the traffic regulations with impunity.

Report provides that Nigerian Police Force is aiding these lawless politicians to violate traffic laws and in the process harass, intimidate and brutalize innocent motorists going about their legitimate businesses.

Investigation also indicates that the recklessness of these group of Nigerians are equally responsible for couple of accidents within the city.

Further findings equally confirmed reports in some quarters that 78 per cent of the convoy drivers in the employment of these politicians are drunk drivers that care less about the statutory speed limits in the country.
