I’ve gotten used to people calling me a thief – Suswam

Immediate past governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam has accused the current administration of Samuel Ortom of being behind his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This is just as the former governor insisted that he is willing and ready to face the consequences of his actions and in-actions while serving as governor of the agrarian state for eight years.

Suswam who stated this yesterday in an interview with Leadership, however, expressed anger over the deliberate attempt by APC government led by Governor Ortom to denigrate his name with outright deceit and falsehood.
According to Suswam, “the government of the state through a hired agent wrote a petition and that petition was from the Mike Iordye, the former head of service led committee, because most of things the EFCC asked me were the same recommendations that I saw in the Iordye report and I believe it was government of Benue that induced that because everything in that Iordye committee is what is with the EFCC.”

“They invited me and I honoured the invitation and they treated me with courtesy. I did eight years as governor and if I am asked to account for my stewardship, there is no time I would run away.

“I am ready to face the consequences of my actions and inactions while I was governor in Benue State and so. I have no problem with that. Allegations of corruptions are being bandied everywhere in Benue about me and most of the principal officers of the present government especially the SSG (Takema), his preoccupation is to go anywhere and say that Suswam is a thief but I have gotten used to it,” he stated.

Last week, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-madueke traveled on the same flight with Buhari to London, while on the six hour trip she made several attempt to start a conversation with Mr. Buhari, but the 72-old winner of Nigeria’s presidential election known for his no-nonsense stance on corruption rebuffed all her entreaties. It is not known if she ever returned to Nigeria.

The wife of the Mr. Suswam, Yemisi, reportedly left yesterday to Houston in the US to avoid getting caught up in the sweep.

Don’t Forget Me When You Assume Office, Suswam Begs Governor Elect

Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, yesterday pleaded with  the Governor-elect, Chief Samuel Ortom, not to forget him when he assumes office on May 29 2015.  Suswam, who congratulated Ortom on his victory at the polls  begged the governor-elect to look after him after his exit from office next month.

According to Nigeria Pilot, the governor stated this yesterday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Makurdi, when he played host to Ortom.

He said, “When I leave (office), I will be a burden on you and you must take care of  me.” Suswam also said his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would not challenge Ortom’s victory in court, stressing that litigation would be an unnecessary distraction for the incoming government.

Earlier, Ortom, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said he was overwhelmed when the governor called him on Sunday to congratulate him on his victory at the polls. He noted that the governor’s attitude signified a new dawn for the state and commended him for displaying “sound maturity” on the outcome of the election. He also praised his PDP opponent, Terhemen Tarzoor, who he said, had called to congratulate him. Meanwhile, Suswam said he had started a peaceful transition to enable the governor-elect to take over from him.
