Wole Soyinka to hold private funeral on Trump’s inauguration day

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Monday said he will hold a private funeral on January 20 when United States, U.S, President-elect, Donald Trump, is due to be inaugurated as President.

Speaking in Lagos, the revered playwright however stated that the funeral is to mourn the death of Nigeria’s common sense, and not to mourn with U.S citizens.

“Our common sense is totally lost. I am embarrassed sometimes that I occupy the same nation space with some people,” he said.

Recall that the Nobel laureate who had said he would destroy his Green Card  should Trump be elected as President, on Thursday last week confirmed that he had carried out his earlier pronouncement.

Imprisoned Pistorius allowed to attend grandmother’s funeral

South African authorities say convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius was let out of prison for four hours last week to attend his grandmother’s funeral.

The correctional services department said Tuesday that an elite security unit took the former track star to the funeral Friday morning under a compassionate leave policy for prisoners.

Department spokesman Manelisi Wolela says Pistorius, who fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, asked to attend the funeral and was allowed to do so because he is classified as a low risk offender.

The double-amputee Olympian is serving a six-year sentence for murdering Steenkamp at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria. Prosecutors have said the sentence is too lenient.

World Leaders To Attend Shimon Peres’ Funeral

A long list of world leaders will attend the funeral of former Israeli prime minister and president Shimon Peres, who died on Wednesday at 93.

Some of the world’s most powerful figures will be at the service in Jerusalem on Friday, including US President Barack Obama.

Mr Peres’s condition had deteriorated after suffering a stroke two weeks ago.

He was one of the last of a generation of Israeli politicians present at the nation’s birth in 1948.

Mr Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his role negotiating the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians a year earlier, a prize he shared with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The agreement was witnessed by former US President Bill Clinton and signed at the White House. On Wednesday Mr Clinton said on Twitter:

“I will miss Shimon Peres, my brilliant and eloquent friend. His life was a blessing to all who strive for peace…”

Other world leaders set to attend the funeral on Friday include UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Mr Peres will receive a state burial at a ceremony on Friday at Mount Herzel Cemetery in Jerusalem.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sent a letter of condolence to Mr Peres’ family “expressing his sorrow and sadness”.

Bobbi Kristina Brown’s Funeral Reportedly Ends With Touching Tribute To Whitney Houston

Bobbi Kristina Brown’s Family Told to Prepare for Worst, Prepares Funeral

A source close to the family tells ET that Bobbi Kristina Brown’s father Bobby Brown, husband Nick Gordon and others have been advised to prepare for the worst and that the longer the 21-year-old remains in the coma, the more likely it will be that she will not regain consciousness. They are praying for her recovery but have also started to discuss how they would handle funeral arrangements.

“Privacy is requested in this matter. Please allow for my family to deal with this matter and give my daughter the love and support she needs at this time,” Bobby said in a statement.

The daughter of the late Whitney Houston was found in a bathtub unconscious after an apparent drug overdose on Saturday morning at 10:25 a.m. Another source told ET that she was in “bad shape” when she was first found unconscious. She was taken to North Fulton Hospital and placed on a ventilator.

Thousands gathered outside Bernard “Tignous” Verlhac’s private family funeral service at Montreuil City Hall outside Paris and the large crowds broke into applause when pallbearers carried the decorated casket from the town hall building into the light drizzle. Verlhac, 57, was buried at Paris’ Père Lachaise cemetery, the final resting place of many great writers and artists, including Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde and Victor Hugo.

The cartoonist was among 12 who lost their lives Jan. 7, when masked terrorists stormed the offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Muslim extremists were outraged by the publication’s depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. Verlhac’s surviving colleagues lent their pens to adorn his coffin with the same kinds of caricatures and jokes that he made in life.

Chloé Verlhac, the artist’s widow, spoke at the funeral while the large crowds lay flowers beneath a large portrait of the cartoonist outside, Agence France Presse reported. She said it is everyone’s responsibility to make sure her husband’s death is not in vain and that all the slain Charlie Hebdo journalists are remembered as messengers of hope.
