Military To Develop Locally-Made Equipment To Fight Terror

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olanishakin, says the Nigerian military will no longer depend solely on foreign technology in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents in the north-east and other security challenges confronting the nation.

Instead, he said the military would partner with research institutions in Nigeria to develop locally-made military equipment that would assist in tackling some of the challenges.

General Olanishakin stated this during a seminar on Research and Development and launching of a 15-year Strategic Plan by the Nigerian Air Force in Kaduna State.

The strategic plan will last between 2015 to 2030.

He identified lack of synergy among the stakeholders as largely responsible for the technological backwardness of Nigeria over the years.

The military boss hinted that the introduction of the Research and Development plan was in line with the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to the military to commence domestic production of weapons for use by the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Army General Dismissed, Jailed For Losing Equipment To Boko Haram

The Nigerian military on Thursday convicted a Brigadier General, Enitan Ransome-Kuti, blamed for the loss of Baga in Borno State to Boko Haram insurgents in January.

Mr. Ransome-Kuti, son of Beko Ransome-Kuti, a foremost Nigerian pro-democracy activist who died on February 10, 2006, was arraigned before a military court, sitting in Mogadishu Barracks, Abuja, in May.

He was accused of cowardly behaviour, loss of weapons to Boko Haram, and negligent performance of military duty under section 62b of the Armed Forces Act.

In its judgment Thursday, the court dismissed the charge bordering on cowardly behaviour, following a no-case submission by the defendant.

The court said the officer was right in withdrawing his troops in the face of superior firepower from Boko Haram terrorists.

He was however sentenced to six-month imprisonment for loss of equipment to the extremist sect.

He was also found guilty for negligently performing his duties and was therefore dismissed from service.

G7 Countries To Support Nigerian Military With Equipment

The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has said that the Group of seven (G7) countries will be supporting Nigeria’s military with equipment in its fight against surging terrorism.

The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Speaking to governors at the inauguration of the National Economic Summit at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Mr. Buhari said, “The requirements of the military have been prepared by the Service Chiefs for the consideration of the G7 Nations.”

The president said he directed the three states – Borno, Yobe and Adamawa – affected mostly by insurgency, to articulate “realistic assessments”, costs, and localities by Local Government areas affected by terrorism.

He said the cost of the affected facilities in these localities will be submitted to the President of the G7 for further verification.
