FG To Disburse N200m Each To 8 States To Empower Women

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Aisha Alhassan, said N200 million would be disbursed to eight pilot states each through the National Women Empowerment Fund (NAWEF) to empower women at the grassroots.

Alhassan said this during a media briefing on the take-off of the National Women Empowerment Fund (NAWEF) and the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) in Abuja.

She said the eight pilot states are Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Akwa Ibom, Osun, and Abia, adding that other states would benefit later. She added that “the NAWEF targets 10,000 women beneficiaries in each of the pilot states; the condition of the loans both under the GEEP and NAWEF are the same.

“The GEEP programme is one of the five Federal Government Social Investment Programme targeted at providing loans to young men and women from all states on liberal condition.

“Under both programmes, each beneficiary will receive between N10,000 and N100,000, depending on the type of business or trade with no interest, no collateral and repayable in six months.”

Forum Urges FG To Empower Security Forces In Pipeline Monitoring

The Chairman of the Producers’ Forum of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Emmanuel Onuorah, on Monday urged the Federal Government to empower the security forces in the monitoring of oil pipelines.

Onourah made the call in an interview in Lagos. He noted that the spate of oil theft in the country had become worrisome.

Onourah said it was time modern technology was employed, instead of using unconventional methods through award of contracts. He advocated the need for sound pipeline integrity to enable safe transportation of crude and refined products in the country. “Pipeline installation can now be done using state of the art technology in a manner that will not be accessible to vandals.

“We expect that the managers of the pipelines can imbibe the culture of regular maintenance.

“The enabling legal instruments for sanctioning violators and defaulters should also be reviewed,” he said.

He urged the Federal Government to develop the political will to nip in the bud pipeline vandalism and oil theft in the country.

President Buhari Urged To Empower Private Sector Participation

The Chief Imam of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdulahakeem Abdullateef, on Sunday advised President Mohammed Buhari to empower the private sector to develop untapped areas of the economy. Abdullateef gave the advice during interview in Lagos.

He also said the new government needed to tackle insecurity, corruption and unemployment to succeed. “Government should empower private sector to invest in subsectors such as gas, iron and steel. If we can refine oil here, we would be saving the cost of bringing in fuel from abroad. In fact, if we refine, we can begin to export and that would positively affect the currency since they would not need more of naira to purchase.”

Abdullateef said in spite of the country’s enormous wealth, it was yet to reflect on the living standard of its citizens. He said government should create an enabling environment for businesses to strive, adding that, “doing business in neighbouring countries is by far cheaper than doing business in Nigeria.”

The cleric further advised government to explore opportunities in agriculture, the gas industry, as well as iron and steel. He said: “you cannot address security without addressing unemployment because many Nigerians are willing to work. There should be an all-inclusive approach to employment in the country.

“We are blessed, we have weather that is rear to come by in the world, we have fertile agricultural land to explore agriculture, especially mechanised farming.”

The Imam commended the President for his promise to allow various arms of government to operate on their own, and urged him not to be biased in the fight against bribery and corruption.

He, therefore, advised the President to work with technocrats, intelligent and righteous individuals. President Buhari was inaugurated into office on May 29.
