Nigeria Will Emerge Stronger From Recession- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Abuja said that Nigeria will emerge better and stronger from it’s current socio-economic situation.

Buhari stated this in a message to the 7th National Prayer Breakfast titled; “A tree and it’s fruits, is yours a blessing or a curse”.

The President, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Babachir Lawal, said leaders in the country must strive to be a light to the people they lead.

“As leaders we must strive to be the light of the world, we must resist to talk about our current socio-economic situation with despondency.

“As for me, I have complete faith that Nigeria will emerge from this crisis strong, united, prosperous and secured.

“I believe that all these will come to fruition in the life time of this government, the life time of this executives, legislature and the judiciary,” Buhari said.

In a sermon, Rev. Abu Banko defined a politician as a model for all citizens, adding that a politician must be ready to give not steal from the nation.

According to him, a politician should also be ready to promote the general welfare of the people, and help raise their standard of living.

Banko, therefore, urged all public office holders, including civil servants, lawmakers and those in the executive, to lead Nigeria to its destiny.

He prayed God to guide them steer the affairs of the nation with love, humility and sacrifice.

Banko urged all Nigerians to be humble, turn away from sins and seek the face of God, so as to end current problems in the country.

New Virus Deadlier Than Ebola, Zika To Emerge, Scientists Warn

Scientists have warned that humans should brace for the emergence of a new virus that could be deadlier than Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or Zika.

The scientists in a study published on March 14, 2016, edition of the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, titled “SARS-like WIV1-CoV poised for human emergence” said outbreaks from zoonotic sources represent a threat to both human as well as the global economy.

A zoonotic disease is a disease that can be passed between animals and humans.

The scientists are already bracing for a potential outbreak of the new SARS-like virus.

They warn the new virus, called WIV1-CoV, may induce the same results in humans as SARS – starting out with flu-like symptoms and accelerating rapidly to pneumonia.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Bat SARS-like coronavirus WIV1, (Bat SL-CoV-WIV1) also sometimes called SARS-like coronavirus WIV1 that is W1V1-CoV, is a newly identified CoV isolated from Chinese rufous horseshoe bats. The discovery confirms that bats are the natural reservoir of the SARS virus. Phylogenetic analysis shows the possibility of direct transmission of SARS from bats to humans without the intermediary Chinese civets, as previously believed.

The scientists say this virus may never jump to humans, but if it does, WIV1-CoV has the potential to seed a new outbreak with significant consequences for both public health and the global economy.

According to the researchers, the capacity of this group of viruses to jump into humans is greater than originally thought. While other adaptations may be required to produce an epidemic, several viral strains circulating in bat populations have already overcome the barrier of replication in human cells and suggest reemergence as a distinct possibility.

The researchers wrote: “Focusing on the SARS-like viruses, the results indicate that the WIV1-coronavirus (CoV) cluster has the ability to directly infect and may undergo limited transmission in human populations. However, in vivo attenuation suggests additional adaptation is required for epidemic disease. Importantly, available SARS monoclonal antibodies offered success in limiting viral infection absent from available vaccine approaches. Together, the data highlight the utility of a platform to identify and prioritize prepandemic strains harboured in animal reservoirs and document the threat posed by WIV1-CoV for emergence in human populations.”

Nigeria To Emerge Africa’s Economic Hub In 2026- Onu

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has said the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari towards diversifying the nation’s economy will make Nigeria an economic hub of the continent in the next 10 years.

Playing host to the Managing Director of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Programme Development and Technical Cooperation Division, Philippe Scholtes, in Abuja at the weekend, the minister said the ministry was committed to use science and technology to save the nation by growing its economy.

Onu thanked UNIDO for its contributions globally and in Nigeria with the partnership to grow energy and agro-business.

He appealed to UNIDO to increase its efforts as well towards boosting agriculture to ensure food security in the country.

The minister specified that UNIDO’s involvement in food protection will not only lift farmers out of poverty but will tame rural-urban migration.

“We will be very happy if you could add food security because you will touch more persons and would be able to lift more persons out of poverty in Nigeria,” he said.

Earlier, Scholtes told the minister that UNIDO has earmarked $2.6 billion for the development of Small Hydro Power (SHP) plants in Nigeria in line with its mandate to promote, and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development in developing countries.

“We obtained funding for $2.6 billion to help us demonstrate the small scale hydro power to powerhouse and factories in places that have not been reached by electricity.

“This project funded by Global Environment Facility funds is meant to help countries address environment issues that can benefit the global communities,” the UNIDO boss stated.

New PDP Leaders To Emerge August- Party

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that a new national chairman of the party, as well as a new BoT chair, will emerge three months after the resignation of former holders of the positions.

The secretary of the BoT, Walid Jibrin, made the disclosure on Wednesday at the National Secretariat of the PDP in Abuja after a meeting of the BoT.

The former Chairman of the Party, Ahmadu Mu’azu, resigned from office in May, citing health reasons, while the former BoT chair, Tony Anenih, followed suit shortly, to allow former President Goodluck Jonathan assume the position.

However, Mr. Jonathan declined the offer and instead the party’s NEC appointed a former national chairman, Bello Haliru, to serve as acting chairman of the BoT.

The party also approved that Mr. Mu’azu’s deputy, Uche Secondus, serve as the acting national chairman.

“Like you are aware, the appointment of the acting Chairman Is for three months and after three months we will sit again, because by our constitution the board of trustees regulates its own activities,” Mr. Jibrin said Wednesday.
He also said the BoT has the capacity to provide guidance to all the structures of the party to ensure it remains intact and “bounce back”.

He said the BoT was working closely with members of the National Working Committee and its members in the national assembly.

“We are doing our best to ensure that sanity is brought to our party, our party is going to kick again and we are going to bounce back,’’ he said.

The BoT secretary called on members of the party at the national assembly to cooperate with the BoT as it seeks to rebuild the party.

He also revealed that the party’s reconciliation committee headed by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, is yet to submit its report to the leaders of the party because it asked for an extension of time.

He said the committee had asked for memorandum from PDP members across Nigeria and that it was planning a zonal tour across the nation to meet with select leaders and interest groups.

“We have sought for an extension for up to 10 weeks to complete our job as three weeks will not allow us to do a proper job.

“We have asked the NWC to look at it and have accepted and granted the permission to extend it to 10 weeks. I do not think we are going to exceed that 10 weeks,” he said.

Also speaking, the Acting Chairman of the BoT, Mr. Bello, stated that the party would ensure credible opposition and would produce capable leaders to fill the party’s slot at the national assembly.

“We will help the government where we think they are not doing the right thing and we will bring their attention to things that are not working,” he said.
