These photos was taken from Area 1 roundabout, Garki, Abuja.
Following the preparedness of Nigerians and the Federal Government for the 54th Independence celebration of Nigeria, it is highly offending and disappointing to see that not even a single shade of green and white was visible on that major road.
In order not to be misunderstood, this post is written from the aggrieved heart of a Nigerian and not from a religious perspective.
This is how the streets of America look like on July 4th, but some might say that America is not a very religious community, thus consider this other illustration.
Above are the streets of India and Saudi Arabia on their national day celebrations, considering they are among the world’s most religious nations.
So what excuse do we have as country to not honour even a tiny flag of Green and White on that major road but had the time to decorate the roundabout with lighting for a religious celebration that is a few days after 1st October.
Have we lost all sense of patriotism left that we no longer regard the freedom that our founding fathers suffered humiliation fighting for?
For goodness’ sake, this is a major round about in the FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY and it is a slap on the face of every Nigerian and let us please keep religion out of this, because ignoring our Independence and flaunting any religious celebration does not make us religious… Not at all.
The harsh tone of this post would remain same if it was a Cross or the sculpture of Sango or Amadioha or any religious symbol that was being lighted on that roundabout, without a decoration of Green and White to mark and celebrate our Independence.
The progress of our nation is not only dependent on our religious show offs but also on our dedication to this Nation that binds us and gives us an identity among other nations of the world.
Regardless of tribe, religion, beliefs and norms, being Nigerian is what enables us to raise shoulders anywhere we find ourselves in the world. There is a high probability of foreigners asking of your nationality first before your religion.
Hence, it is sickening to realize that the FCT had barely anything to show indicating that Nigeria is 54. It is even more sickening to realize that some people even celebrate the birthdays of their cats and dogs, but here is the our beloved country being neglected on Her birthday.
Let us however remember that we will all pay for it if we continue with this habit of carelessness and unpatriotism and also remember that the only heritage we can leave for our children is a united Nigeria, a nation that stands firm regardless of tribal and religious differences.
Happy Independence and Happy Eid El Kabir in advance.
