Facebook Shuts Down Ads For An Entire Country

Facebook has taken the unusual step of shutting down ads for an entire nation.

The social network said it has turned off ads in Thailand following the death of the country’s deeply revered king. It’s the first time Facebook has imposed an ad blackout for a whole country.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 70-year reign came to an end on Thursday when he died at the age of 88. Facebook (FB, Tech30) said in a post that removing ads is “a cultural custom” during the mourning period.

It admitted that it doesn’t yet know how long Thailand will be mourning the king, whose unifying appeal stretched across Thai society.

According to the royal palace, all government buildings will fly the national flag at half-staff for 30 days starting Friday, and all civil servants have been ordered to wear black clothing for a year.

Facebook declined to comment further on the ad shutdown. Its post said advertisers within Thailand can still run ads outside the country.

Other websites took measures to reflect the country’s somber mood. Google (GOOGL, Tech30)’s homepage in Thailand was changed to a dark-gray-and-white color scheme, although ads were still showing up for some searches.

Someone Burned Down A Giant Tribute To Donald Trump

A huge red-white-and-blue letter T with an American flag theme in tribute to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has risen on a lawn days after a slightly smaller one was torched there.

Trump supporter Sam Pirozzolo stood proudly Wednesday on his front lawn in Staten Island by the 16-foot-high letter, almost as tall as his house.

The T, ringed by a fence, is painted in latex on foam insulation with a wooden support frame. The few surviving pieces of the original T are still charred black.

Investigators are trying to determine who sneaked up under cover of darkness and set fire to artist Scott LoBaido’s original 12-foot-high T on Sunday, about three months after it was installed. Pirozzolo blames “pro-Hillary Clinton thugs.”

Pirozzolo was awakened at about 1 a.m. when a passing motorist knocked on his door to alert him about the fire.

He rushed out as the Trump tribute was going up in flames, “and the first thing that came to my mind was, ‘Oh, my God, this is like the Ku Klux Klan burning a cross on my lawn, telling me that I have to shut up.'”

Instead, Pirozzolo, who’s a 52-year-old optician, and the artist set to work the next day, assembling another installation.

Lagos Shuts Down 70 Churches, 20 Mosques Over Noise Pollution

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday, shut down 70 churches, 20 mosques and about 11 hotels, club houses and beer parlours in a move aimed at reducing noise in the state.

The General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Bola Shabi, who made this known, said that henceforth, the state government would no longer allow make-shift buildings to be used as places of worship.

Shabi said: “Precisely about 70 churches, 20 mosques and about 11 hotels, club houses and beer parlours were shut and we’ve given them some directives to follow.

“We’ve been so strict now that we are not going to even allow make-shift churches in the state any longer. “What I mean by make-shift, using tents and uncompleted building, we are not going to allow that any further in the state.

“But I will strongly tell you that the level of compliance is more on the mosque area, because immediately you shut them, they instantly bring down their speakers or reduce the noise they make.’’

Shabi said that LASEPA planned to reduce noise in the state to 70 percent and to zero per cent by the year 2020. “As at today, we are only able to reduce the noise level to about 35 per cent. That is not a pass mark yet.

So, until we reach that target of 70 to 80 per cent, we will continue the enforcement. Enforcement is a continuous exercise and we have set a target for ourselves. We want to ensure that Lagos is noise-free by the year 2020. With our status as a mega city, by year 2020 we will be free of noise,’’ he said.

Steve Harvey Gets Emotional Walking Daughter Down The Aisle

Steve Harvey is a lot of things. You either love him or hate him. But he’s always struck me as a good father. And his twin daughters Karli and Brandi are lovely ladies. So I was excited to see the news that his daughter Karli was getting married to entrepreneur and business owner Ben Raymond.

Naturally, her father was the one to walk her down the aisle.

But it wasn’t an easy task for Steve or Karli. Both fought back tears and tried not to look at each other as they were preparing to step into the ceremony space. It was a beautiful moment you’ll just have to watch to completely grasp.
