Putin, Erdogan Discuss #Aleppo Over Phone

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan have discussed the Syria conflict in a phone conversation, the Kremlin says.

They agreed to continue coordinating efforts to achieve a resolution in Syria, it said in a statement on Friday.

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency said Erdogan told Putin that it was essential to agree to a ceasefire in Aleppo “as soon as possible.”

The Syrian army has put foreign-backed militants under siege in Aleppo and now hopes to capture the whole city in what would be a devastating blow to the country’s enemies.

Turkey and other countries opposed to the Syrian government have intensified their parleys, putting forth a proposal through the “opposition” which they support, for Assad to step down.

Anadolu said Ankara is hoping a ceasefire will be implemented in Aleppo for the Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) Islamic holiday which in Turkey begins around September 12.

Erdogan had met separately with Putin and US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the recent G20 meeting in China, telling them both that it was essential to agree to a truce for Aleppo.

Buhari Visits China To Discuss Development Of Infrastructure

The development of Nigeria’s infrastructure, especially in the power, roads, railways, aviation, water supply and housing sectors will form the crux of discussions when President Muhammadu Buhari meets Chinese President Xi Jinping, said presidential spokesman Femi Adesina on Saturday.

President Buhari is due to leave Abuja on Sunday for a working visit to China aimed at securing China’s greater support for Nigeria.

Adesina said in a statement that Buhari would also hold talks with Premier Li Keqiang and the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National Peoples’ Congress, Zhang Dejiang during his visit to the country.

He said the visit will enable the President Buhari to focus on “strengthening bilateral cooperation in line with the Federal Government’s agenda for the rapid diversification of the Nigerian economy, with emphasis on agriculture and solid minerals development.”

“It is expected that in the course of the visit, several new agreements and memorandums of understanding to boost trade and economic relations between Nigeria and China will be concluded and signed.

“The agreements include a Framework Agreement between the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the National Development and Reform Commission of the Peoples’ Republic of China to Boost Industrial Activities and Infrastructural Development in Nigeria.

“Others are a Framework Agreement between the Federal Ministry of Communications and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, and a Memorandum of Understanding between Nigeria and China on Scientific and Technological Cooperation.”

He noted that the President and his delegation will tour the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone to gain more useful insights and understanding of the policies that underpinned China’s astronomical economic growth in recent years, n line with the present administration’s prioritization of economic diversification and industrialisation to boost employment,

The President, whose entourage will include some state governors as well as the Ministers of Agriculture, Water Resources, Transport, Defence, Power, Works & Housing, Industry, Trade & Investment, Federal Capital Territory, Science & Technology and Foreign Affairs, will also open a China-Nigeria Business/Investment Forum in Beijing and meet with members of the Nigerian Community in China before returning to Abuja at the weekend.

Buhari, President Of Benin Republic Discuss Fight Against Boko Haram

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari and the President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi, met on Tuesday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, to discuss the fight against Boko Haram terrorist group.

At the meeting, President Yayi pledged to deploy 800 military men to help fight insurgency in Nigeria’s north-east.

Acknowledging President Yayi’s contribution to the war on terror, President Buhari said securing a healthy relationship with neighbouring countries was key to security and economic development.

President Buhari reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining the existing bilateral relationship with Benin Republic and other countries within West Africa.

He said: “Such partnerships are essential for good neighbourliness and development”.

The Nigerian leader further expressed Nigeria’s readiness to host an Economic Community for West African States’  summit in about nine days where vital issues bothering on security and the economy would be discussed.

Buhari To Discuss Railway, Power Projects In South Africa With Chinese Leader

President Muhammadu Buhari will be in South Africa on Thursday to participate in the Forum on China/Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) which would hold in Johannesburg on December 4 and 5.

In a statement, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media  and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said that Mr Buhari, at the forum would follow up his meeting with the Chinese Leader Xi Jinping which took place in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in November.

“President Buhari had indicated to Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader at the bilateral meeting in New York, that he wanted China to re-commence stalled rail projects under new terms that would see China providing nearly all the financing required.

“Of particular interest is the coastal railway project stretching for 1402 kilometers linking Lagos in the West with Calabar in the East; a project that is expected to be financed with 12 billion U.S Dollars Chinese loan and which will create about 200,000 jobs.

“Another rail project that will be up for renegotiation is the 8.3 billion Dollars Lagos-Kano standard gauge modernisation project, of which only a segment, Kaduna-Abuja has reached completion stage”, the statement read.

Buhari To Discuss Terrorism, Global Security In UN General Assembly

President Muhammadu Buhari will leave Nigeria for New York, on Thursday, for a series of meetings and interactions with notable world leaders within and on the sidelines of the main events of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in Abuja.

Buhari, he said, would engage in talks, deliberations and interactions with the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, President Barack Obama of the United States, President Francois Hollande of France, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, President Vladmir Putin of Russia, President Xi Jinping of China, Prime Minister Narenda Modi of India, among others.

Calabar Elders Meet Buhari, Discuss Restoration Of Oil Wells

Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, on Tuesday led a delegation of Calabar elders to the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari to discuss various issues including the loss of oil wells owned by Cross River.

Ndoma-Egba, told newsmen at the end of the visit that the presence of the delegation at Defence House was ‘non-partisan’.

He said that part of the issues discussed at the meeting was the vulnerability of the people of Cross River and the peculiar challenges they encounter every day.

He said: “You can see that l led a delegation of very eminent Cross River people. It is a non-partisan delegation.

“Some of them have had relationship with the president-elect since the civil war days.

“We came to congratulate him and to discuss a bit about Cross River.

“We raised the issue of the vulnerability of the people of Cross River; the peculiar challenges that we face as a people; the debt profile; the loss of Bakassi; the loss of oil wells.

“We also discussed the poor state of our infrastructure and the loss of visibility in national politics.

“These were the issues discussed and he (Buhari) promised that he would look into our complaints,” Ndoma-Egba told media personnel.
