Read Why EFCC Released APC’s Jafaru Isa, Still Detain PDP’s Olisa Metuh

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has denied claims it was on a witchhunt of leaders of the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party after its continued detention of Olisa Metuh and release of Jafaru Isa, an All Progressives Congress chieftain.

Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, told journalists Monday that while Mr. Isa had begun the process of refunding the money in his possession, Mr. Metuh had refused to do same.

?”From the records, Metuh got over N400 million, he has not said anything because we need the public money to be returned so that it’s going to be used for public good,” Mr. Magu said during a meeting with online media publishers in Lagos.

“Also Jafaru Isa, what Dasuki gave him was N170 million. He also agreed…of course he has collected that money, he was with us for 4-5 days and then he made a deposit of N100 million and entered an undertaking to bring the rest. That does not mean we will not prosecute him.”

“But this other Metuh, instead of going for a refund, he has admitted he collected money…. so instead of… he still has the money because the money is too much. Instead of returning the money, he preferred to go on strike.”?

Mr. Isa, a former military governor of Kaduna State, was arrested last Wednesday by EFCC operatives for allegedly receiving N170 million from the embattled National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Mr. Metuh, the Spokesperson of the PDP, has been in EFCC custody since January 5?.

The EFCC boss insisted the Commission is not selective in its anti-corruption war?, noting that only people involved in “some certain action or inaction of corruption” are being invited for questioning.

“Nobody who is not corrupt, who is not involved, is with us,” he said.

“In all the cases, we conduct preliminary investigation. We work hard. If it is company you used, we unveil the profile of the company to see who owns the company. If it’s money, we make sure we follow the money, in your account.

“So it is not true that we just go and carry people and dump them?. Sometimes you have to give chance to the person accused to say his own side of the story. And in the process the man will disclose a lot of things that you may not know. So it is very necessary for you to follow up on the information received from the person arrested, to strengthen whatever you have.

“We don’t keep people for more than 10-15 days. In fact, in most cases, we obtain relevant court orders. In all cases, if you see we keep somebody, there must be a supporting court order.

“If you are not corrupt, we will not have any cause to invite you. So we only invite corrupt people, no selective.”

Mr. Magu also said he had begun an internal cleansing of the EFCC to weed out corrupt operatives from the anti-graft war.

“I don’t want to disclose what the Commission is doing but I’m telling you I will not work with anybody who is corrupt because there is no moral justification to come and make noise?, and chase corrupt people when you are yourself corrupt.

“We do not have sufficient personnel – lawyers, detectives the way we want. But the little we have we try to make use of whatever we can lay our hands on.”

DSS Gets Court Order To Detain Nnamdi Kanu

Department of State Services, DSS, has secured an order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, to detain leader of Biafran agitators, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, for another 90 days.

The 90 days grace granted the security outfit was to enable investigation into the allegation of acts and financing of terrorism leveled against the Biafran leader by the Federal Government.

Counsel to DSS, Mr. Moses Idakwo, at the resumption of trial of Kanu yesterday in Abuja, drew the attention of Chief Magistrate Shuaib Usman to the Federal High Court order of Justice Adeniyi Ademola granting further detention of Kanu for another 90 days.

Idakwo therefore, asked the Magistrate’s Court to step down from the trial on the ground that the court lacked power to prosecute terrorism charges.

The Biafran leader was, however, produced in court in compliance with last week’s order of the Magistrate Court, but with heavy security escort.

Counsel to the accused, Mr. Vincent Egechukwu Obeta, objected vehemently to the order of the court and the application that the Magistrate’s Court steps down from Kanu’s trial.

Soldiers Harass, Detain Punch Reporter Taking Pictures Of Jonathan’s Home

The spokesperson of the Joint Task Force in Bayelsa state, Isa Ado, a lieutenant colonel, has confirmed the arrest and subsequent handing over of a Punch reporter, Simon Utebor, to the police.

Mr. Utebor was arrested by soldiers for attempting to take pictures of President Goodluck Jonathan’s private home in Otuoke, Bayelsa State. Mr. Ado said the JTF Commander in the state has ordered for the release of Mr. Utebor.

However, Mr. Utebor told PREMIUM TIMES via phone he was yet to regain his freedom. “I have been transferred to the State CID, and I have written a statement on the incident and we are still waiting for the police authorities,” Mr. Utebor said.

Some soldiers deployed to protect President Goodluck Jonathan’s private residence in Otuoke, Bayelsa state, on Thursday had harassed and detained Mr. Utebor, for attempting to take pictures of the president’s house.

Mr. Utebor was arrested by soldiers from the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta and handed over to the police at Otuoke Police Station.

Mr. Utebor was reportedly accosted by soldiers on guard duty while taking photographs of on-going work on the palatial residence constructed while the president was in office.

Artisans were seen putting finishing touches to the premises consisting of multiple blocks of two storey buildings.

Mr. Jonathan is expected to be received on Friday by the Bayelsa Government at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre at 3p.m. and later in his Otuoke country home by his kinsmen.

Earlier efforts to speak with the Punch correspondent were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was switched off.

When initially contacted the spokesperson of the Joint Task Force, Mr. Ado, had said he was out of station on official assignment but however, pledged to investigate the report and respond as soon as possible.

Nigeria Detains Russian Cargo Plane with Military Shipment to Chad

Nigeria detained a Russian cargo plane and its French-speaking crew on Saturday after it made an unauthorised landing in the northern city of Kano with military hardware bound for neighbouring Chad, a security source said. An air force spokesman confirmed the plane had been detained but gave no further details.

The plane had been travelling from Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic, to the Chadian capital N’Djamena but was forced to make an emergency landing in Kano because N’Djamena airport was closed, the security source said.

He said after the five crew members were detained, inspectors found two helicopters, a bullet-proof jeep and boxes of what were suspected to be military hardware.

The Russian embassy in Abuja did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It was not clear what the shipment was for. Chadian fighters have been involved in Central African Republic’s conflict since Muslim Seleka rebels seized the southern capital Bangui in 2013.

Mysterious arms shipments have caused controversy in Nigeria before. A Nigerian court sentenced an alleged member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and a Nigerian accomplice to five years in prison in May last year over an illegal shipment of mortars and rockets seized in the main port of Lagos in 2010.
