1 Killed, Many Injured As School Wall Collapses In Kado-Abuja

Kado village in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in FCT was yesterday thrown into mourning when a classroom wall of a private school in the area collapsed; killing one of the pupils, while others sustained various degrees of injuries.

An eyewitness said Friday that the wall of one of the classrooms, belonging to Monsour Nursery and Primary School, suddenly caved in and collapsed over the pupils, just as they were taking their break meal for the day.

It was gathered that the deceased, David Jacob, a 4-year-old pupil, whose parents are from Kaduna State was killed, when he was hit by one of the collapsing blocks, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Gwarinpa General Hospital.

Acting secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Mallam Musa Maikasuwa, who was at the scene of the incident,  told journalists that the school is among the over 500 schools closed down recently by the secretariat for operating illegally.

Maikasuwa however explained that the proprietor of the school, Ogbonna Uba had removed the seal and commenced, without permission from his office, adding that the law would take its cause, because it is a violation of an existing law.

He advised parents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to stop sending their children to substandard and unregistered schools, saying that they should move their children to public schools in their area to avoid such a disaster in the future.

Children, Others Killed As Islamic School Building Collapses

A one-storey building belonging to Abu Naib Islamic School on Gero Road in the Bukuru area of Jos South Local Government area of Plateau State, last night collapsed on pupils, killing an unconfirmed number of children.

Although the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) no Sunday confirmed four dead and five injured, sources in the community said the death toll was higher and that the figure was likely to rise considering the degree of the injuries sustained by many of the students.

The pupils, believed to be between the ages of six and eight, were said to be receiving Islamic lectures in the evening when the building collapsed.

Alhaji Danlami Muhammad, who lives in the community, said: “I cannot give details of the casualties right now because we are still trying to rescue the children.”

He said about 40 children were inside the building when it collapsed, adding that “the number could have been higher but for the rainfall that prevented some of the children from attending their Koranic class”.

Pedestrian Bridge Collapses, Kills 7 In Kano

No fewer than seven people were killed in Kano when a pedestrian bridge at Dorayi quarters, Kano, collapsed, the state Police Command said. The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majiya, confirmed the incident in an interview on Sunday.

Majiya said the incident happened around 4:45 p.m. when the bridge, which was still under construction, caved in and collapsed on a car, which was passing underneath it. “The workers at the site had warned motorists not to pass because they were working on the bridge but the driver of the taxi allegedly ignored the warning.

“So, the moment he moved; before he passed, the bridge caved in and collapsed on the vehicle, which led to the death of seven persons,” he said.

According to him, the vehicle has since been evacuated from the scene while the corpses have been deposited at a hospital morgue. Majiya said the police had also commenced investigation into the cause of the incident.
