Fire guts Christ embassy church in Lagos

Fire has razed a section of the Christ Embassy Church, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos State, destroying property said to be worth millions of naira.

The fire, which reportedly lasted for about two hours on Wednesday, was said to have started at about 4am.

The fire, which was caused by burning a heap of refuse, later engulfed four 40-feet containers, reportedly being used as storage facilities by the church.

According to a resident, who claimed to be an eyewitness, the Wednesday fire, which created panic and later caused gridlock in the area, was put out by firefighters from the Alausa Fire Station, who were joined by some church workers.

“The fire started from some refuse being burnt near the containers. It soon engulfed the containers and lasted for about two hours. It attracted sympathisers and passersby to the area. The thick smoke also caused some traffic snarl along Billings Way, Oregun, where the church is located,” the eyewitness said.

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, confirmed the incident, adding that the service deployed two fire trucks from the Alausa station in the area. The director noted that no life was lost in the inferno.

He said, “We got the distress call at about 5am. We immediately deployed two fire trucks from the Alausa Station to attend to it. Four containers caught up in the fire contained electrical appliances, pumping machines and pieces of furniture.

“We were able to put the situation under control.”

It will be recalled that a fire incident also occurred in the church in March 2014, which razed generator houses, damaging about 10 generators.

Anita Oyakhilome’s Name And Picture Removed From ‘Rhapsody of Realities’ Devotional

In the midst of Pastor Chris and Anita Oyakhilome‘s divorce saga, yet another controversy has emerged.

Anita Oyakhilome’s name has been excluded from the newly released October-2014 edition of Rhapsody of Realities, Christ Embassy’s monthly devotional, which she usually co-author. Her name and photo are completely missing from the front and back cover of the latest edition.

The devotional, which was started many years ago by the now estranged couple, usually had both their pictures and writings in the pages.

Also, the back cover of the magazine which usually had a picture of the couple now has only Pastor Chris on it.

Reports also state that there is currently no trace of Anita’s picture or byline in the entire publication.

The new October edition of the Rhapsody of Realities, which is a special edition specifically dedicated to celebrating Nigeria’s Independence (Independence Edition) is already out and given free to church worshipers and non-worshipers alike.

A highly respected female church member, a Pastor precisely, now plays a very key role in the Believers’ Love World Nation – the umbrella body that is in charge of the publication of Rhapsody of Realities.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome Denies Adultery Accusations, Threatens To Sue Journalists

Though not denying the growing divorce scandal surrounding him, the head pastor of Christ Embassy Church, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, has threatened legal recourse against journalists publishing stories about him and his wife, Anita’s divorce.

The pastor, who spoke through his lawyer, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), called the accusations of adultery a “false and malicious” attack against him and the church.

“The attention of our client, Rev. Chris Oyakhilome, and the church has been drawn to the wave of false, malicious and fabricated stories being published in the print and electronic media about his person, the church and a matrimonial cause between him and his wife,” his attorney stated.

Sharply criticizing the recent coverage of the divorce proceedings, which the statement did not refute, the release claimed that publishers went so far as to fabricate claims that he had committed adultery against his wife, Anita. These contradict her claims that the leader of Christ Embassy Church had indeed been unfaithful during their “terribly degenerated” marriage, something she disclosed through counsel to Premium Times earlier Wednesday.

Characterizing the media’s coverage of his wife’s efforts to divorce him as “complete distortion of the facts in the pending proceedings in the United Kingdom”, the statement cited the coverage as “selfishly motivated” for political and financial advantage.

Oyakhilome’s counsel further said the media’s coverage was engineered to bring him and the church shame and ridicule, though his wife was the person who aired the allegations against him. Earlier today, Wednesday, Mrs. Oyakhilome even told Premium Times, through counsel, that the marriage had “terribly degenerated”.

The statement also acknowledged freedom of the press, but quite contradictorily cautioned that further action will be taken to safeguard the image of the church and the pastor if coverage continued. “Be warned therefore that unless the concerned media houses desist from further publishing words and stories which are false and damaging of our client’s reputation and the church, we shall, without further recourse to the concerned publishers, promptly embark on appropriate legal machinery with a view to protecting our client’s reputation and that of the church.”

Chris Oyakhilome’s wife finally files for divorce in London Court

After many  months of speculation over the marriage crisis between Christ Embassy’s Pastor, Chris Oyakhilome and wife, a new report claims the latter has now filed for a divorce in a London court.

In an exclusive report published , the wife is seeking a divorce on the grounds of “unreasonable behaviour” and “adultery”.

She allegedly outlined several allegations against the Pastor which cannot be published for legal reasons.

The divorce case, with Suit No FD14D01650, was filed on April 9, 2014 at Divorce Section A, Central Family Court, First Avenue House, High Holborn, London, UK, on Anita’s behalf by Attwaters Jameson Hill Solicitors, a full-service law firm with expertise in commercial law and a strong consumer focus in family, wills and estate, personal injury law and medical negligence.

According to the online portal, Pastor Chris had been making efforts to avoid divorce in the hope that the wife would eventually have a change of mind, however, Decree nissi was served on the charismatic pastor in his hotel room during a recent visit to the UK.

Decree nissi, in legal terms, is like a yellow card in a football match which is a precursor to a red card (“decree absolute”) if no new evidence is provided to stall proceedings.

Church insiders said Oyakhilome had been hoping for rapprochement, but he was left with no option than to receive the papers when the lawyers cornered him at his hotel in London. The decree absolute, which will effectively end the marriage, is expected to be issued soon while terms of the divorce will be worked out by the lawyers on both sides.

Anita recently wanted to go public with the details of her allegations against the husband but reached an informal agreement to sheathe her sword in the interest of the church Recall that some church members had sometime in May 10, 2014 launched a facebook campaign, asking: “Where is Rev. Anita Oyakhilome?”

They said Pastor Chris and Rev. Anita must unite “for the sake of the gospel, the church and their two beautiful daughters”. They quoted Malachi 2:16 in the Message Bible: “I hate divorce, says the God of Israel.”

The facebook page, which has over 3,300 “likes”, was opened with a stated mission: “This is a Call to Prayer for all believers who understand God’s heart concerning marriage and a Call to Action by Pst. Chris. #DoWhatYouPreach”.

Officials of the church quickly moved to deny any rift between the pastor couple. One official, Kenneth Achumasara, told the media last June thus: “I can tell you authoritatively that there is no issue between Pastor Chris and his wife, Anita… If you go to the UK now, you will see her along with the kids. She is still with him and there is no issue between them. I have been with him for 22 years and the Pastor Chris I know cannot even utter such words as reported. He will never address such a gathering. She will soon be in Nigeria for a programme and I will definitely invite you to have access to her.”

Oyakhilome is the President of Believers’ Love World Inc, the registered name of the Christian ministry, while his wife is the Vice President.
