Dickson Applauds Cancellation Of Poll in S’Ijaw, Commends Bayelsans For Their Support

Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, has applauded the cancellation of the last Sunday rescheduled governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government and commended Bayelsans for their resilience at ensuring that the truth prevailed.

Speaking with journalists in Government House, Yenagoa, the governor said had it been the electoral umpire heeded to his advice, it would have saved the nation from the avoidable waste of public funds.

He pointed out that the decision to hold the election on Sunday by INEC was ill advised, taking into consideration the security situation and peculiar nature of the local government area.

The governor expressed regret over the killings and abduction of INEC ad hoc staff and corps members in the area, assuring the people of the government’s commitment at ensuring that they are re-united with their families in no distant time.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to commend INEC at last for taking the right decision. Let me say that, it is regrettable that, if INEC and the relevant authorities had taken my advice, as Chief Security Officer of the state, the incident would have been avoided.

“They didn’t listen to the honest advice that I gave to them, otherwise, the decision to hold that election on Sunday was ill advised. Regrettably, a lot of people have suffered inconvenience, and a lot of public resources have been expended.
“As we speak, we are in the process of working with community leaders and other partners to identify and retrieve youth corps members, who were put in danger for no fault of theirs.”

Anti-Saraki Senators Demand Cancellation Of Senate Committees

Two principal members of the Senate Unity Forum, senators Suleiman Hunkunyi and Kabiru Marafa, on Tuesday demanded the immediate cancellation of the additional eight committees created last week by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on the grounds of illegality.

They also sought the review of the entire process which led to the appointment of chairmen and vice chairmen of the whole committees, claiming that the Selection Committee, headed by Saraki, was not properly constituted.

The SUF is made up of All Progressives Congress senators who worked against the emergence of Saraki as the President of the upper chamber.

Hunkunyi, the Secretary of the group, and Marafa, the spokesperson, made the demand while raising different points of order on the floor of the Senate to protest the announcement of the committees by Saraki last Wednesday.

They argued that the Senate leadership erred by not seeking the approval of the entire senators before making the new committees public despite the fact that necessary sections of the nation’s constitution and the Senate Rules made adequate provisions for that.

Mr. Maku made the call on Sunday through Nghargbu K’tso, the media director of his campaign organisation. Mr. K’tso, at a press conference in Lafia on Friday, alleged that there was massive rigging in the election, therefore, it should be cancelled.
