Mugabe Appeals For Calm Amid Economic Crisis

  • Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has appealed for calm as his government battles to contain a debilitating economic crisis.

The 92-year-old president appeared frail but jovial, struggling with his lines a bit as he delivered a 30-minute State of the Nation address on Tuesday.

He praised the country’s security forces for maintaining order, although critics accuse them of using violence to stifle dissent.

This once prosperous but now economically struggling southern African country is battling cash shortages, high unemployment and company closures.

A new local currency, introduced last week, has failed to end cash shortages, with many people still sleeping outside banks to access their money. The cash crunch has meant that Mugabe’s government has failed to pay its workers on time since June.

Mugabe did not mention these issues in his speech, resulting in murmurs of protest from opposition members of parliament.

He chuckled when one opposition representative asked him to make sure he was reading the correct speech. This followed last year’s embarrassing incident when for his State of the Nation speech Mugabe read the same speech he had delivered just a few weeks before.

Ondo Guber: Jegede Calls For Calm Over Appeal Court Verdict

The factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 26, 2016 Governorship election in Ondo state, Eyitayo Jegede SAN has called for calm among his supporters following the decision of the Appeal Court Justices sitting on party’s governorship candidate tussle to adjourn its judgment earlier scheduled for today.

The three man appellate justices headed by Justice Ibrahim Salauwa had announced to the parties that some set of applicants who had before now submitted a petition against the previous panel, had again filed a motion against the new panel at the Supreme Court seeking to stop further proceedings in relation to all matters touching on the Ondo State PDP governorship candidature.

It would be recalled that the Court of Appeal had fixed Friday 18th November 2016 to deliver judgment in respect of an appeal filed by Eyitayo Jegede SAN against the decision of Hon. Justice Okon Abang of the  Federal High Court  Abuja which ordered the substitution of his name with that of Jimoh Ibrahim for the Ondo November Governorship Election.

Jegede in a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of his Campaign Organization, Kayode Fasua said he was not unmindful of the fact that the temporary setback is the handiwork of some anti-democratic elements hell bent on truncating his mandate for the November 26, 2016 polls.

London’s Mayor Calls For Calm After London Stabbing Attack

London’s mayor appealed for vigilance and calm Thursday after a stabbing spree in the heart of the city that left one woman dead and five injured.

Police arrested a 19-year-old suspect and said that early indications suggested that “mental health was a factor in this horrific attack.”

However, in the context of a string of recent attacks in Europe, authorities said they were keeping an open mind and that “terrorism remains one line of inquiry being explored.”

London police’s counter-terror chief Mark Rowley said there would be “an increased presence on the streets” of the capital on Thursday, including armed officers — an unusual sight in Britain.

Police arrested the teenager after reports of a stabbing spree in Russell Square, a quiet area close to several popular tourist attractions including the British Museum.

Paramedics fought to save the life of a woman believed to be in her 60s but pronounced her dead at the scene. Two women and three men were also injured but no details have been released about their condition.

The suspect himself was taken to hospital after being immobilised with a Taser electroshock gun.

Xavery Richert, 22, a French tourist staying in a youth hostel on the square, told AFP: “I was buying a beer when I heard a woman shouting who was being chased by a man.

“I thought it was a bag snatching … she was not hurt. I came out for a cigarette, I went back, there were firefighters, police, and then I saw the body under a sheet. You could only see the feet sticking out.”

Russell Square resident Constantine Somerville said: “It’s such a safe area and very quiet especially at night — why would somebody commit an attack in such a quiet area?”

Hijab Crisis Osun Speaker Calls For Calm

Mr Najeem Salaam, the Speaker, Osun House of Assembly, has appealed to Christian and Muslim leaders in the state not to allow court judgment on wearing of hijab in public schools to lead to crisis in the state.

Salaam, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Osogbo, said the religious leader should not allow the issue to create enmity between the two religions.

NAN recalled that the Muslim community in the state in 2013 instituted a case against the state government on the right of female Muslim students in public schools to use hijab on their school uniforms.

NAN also recalled that the a high court in its judgment on the case on June 3, granted female Muslim students the right to be wearing hijabs.
But the state Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) faulted the judgment and vowed to appeal it.

CAN further said that it would direct Christian students in public schools to be wearing church garments to schools to propagate their faith if the state government implemented the judgment.

Since the court Judgment on the issue, female Muslim students have been wearing hijab on their school uniform, while Christians students were also wearing church garments on their uniform as directed by CAN.

Salaam, however, appealed to Christian leaders to seek redress in the court if they are not satisfied with the judgment.

“We have been enjoying peace in the state and the issue of hijab should not be allowed to cause crisis in the state.

“We have been living together as brothers and sisters peacefully in the state and we should not allow anything to cause disunity among us.

“l want to seek the indulgence of Christian community to kindly seek redress in the court if they are not satisfy with the judgment.

“The issue is not a political matter, but rather a legal issue which I want to appeal to our Christian brothers to address legally.

“There is law in the society and judiciary is very key and important to the development of democracy in the country.’’

Salaam said the judgment was not in any way influenced by government, adding that the judiciary is an independent body.

Anambra Community Calm After Alleged Relocation Of Boko Haram Suspects

Ekwulobia community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra is peaceful and calm after the relocation of 47 Boko Haram suspects.

A correspondent who visited the prisons facility on Thursday, reports that there was heavy security presence at the entrance of the prisons.

Boko Haram suspects had been transferred to Ekwulobia minimum prisons in June amidst protests.

A native of the town, John Ezendu, said there was nothing to be excited about as there had been no threat to the tranquility of the community since the suspects were transferred to the town.

Mr. Ezendu said that what was important to the people of the town was for the government to construct good roads in the area as host of such facility.

“We understand that the Boko Haram suspects have been moved from here; that was no problem to us, as you can see there is no excitement.

“What we are praying and hoping for is the construction of our roads so that we can enjoy the benefit of federal presence”, he said.
