North Korea bans Malaysians from leaving in murder row

North Korea has barred Malaysians from leaving the country, sparking tit-for-tat action by Malaysia, as police investigating the murder of Kim Jong-nam sought to question up to three men hiding in the North Korean embassy.

After Pyongyang announced the move, Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak swiftly called for the immediate release of its citizens, instructing police “to prevent all North Korean citizens in Malaysia from leaving the country until we are assured of the safety and security of all Malaysians in North Korea”.

“This abhorrent act, effectively holding our citizens hostage, is in total disregard of all international law and diplomatic norms,” Najib said in a statement, adding that he had called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.

The North’s foreign ministry notified the Malaysian embassy in Pyongyang of the reason for the ban and said it had hoped the case would be swiftly and fairly resolved in order to develop bilateral ties with Malaysia, the North’s KCNA news agency reported.

“All Malaysian nationals in the DPRK will be temporarily prohibited from leaving the country until the incident that happened in Malaysia is properly solved,” the official Korea Central News Agency said on Tuesday, citing the foreign ministry.

Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister Reezal Marican told reporters that there were 11 Malaysians in North Korea: Three at the embassy, two UN workers and six family members.

Al Jazeera’s Florence Looi, reporting from Kuala Lumpur, said Marican also said the government will need to check the exact numbers because some Malaysians might be in the country on approved tours or some other business.

“Initially, we were told Malaysian government’s ban only affected the North Korean embassy staff and officials. But through the prime minister’s statement, it’s clear that it extends to all North Koreans in the country.”

Pyongyang and Kuala Lumpur had unusually strong links for years, but have been set at loggerheads following the assassination of King Jong-nam by two women using VX nerve agent.

Seoul has blamed Pyongyang for the assassination and Kuala Lumpur has sought several North Koreans for questioning, although the only one it arrested was released for lack of evidence.

According to KCNA, Pyongyang’s foreign ministry expressed hopes that the Malaysian government would solve the issue in a “fair and timely manner based on goodwill”.

The North has yet to confirm the dead man’s identity, but has denounced the Malaysian investigation as an attempt to smear it.

Malaysia expelled the North’s ambassador as diplomatic tensions soared, and Pyongyang retaliated late Monday by formally ordering out his counterpart – who had already been recalled for consultations.

Malaysian diplomats and nationals in the North would be allowed to “conduct business and live normally” while the travel ban is in place, it added.

Earlier, Malaysia decided to cancel visa-free entry for North Koreans entering the country. North Koreans are now required to obtain a visa as of March 6 before entering Malaysia for national security reasons, state news agency Bernama reported on Thursday, citing the deputy prime minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Kudbettin Gulen was taken into custody on Sunday by Turkish counter-terrorism police in the Gaziemir district of the Aegean province of Izmir following intelligence that he was staying at a relative’s house, state-run Anadolu Agency said.

The daily Hurriyet reported that Kudbettin Gulen had been abroad recently but that security services learned he had returned to Turkey and he was then detained.

Several of Gulen’s relatives, including a nephew, niece and cousins, have been arrested since the July 15 coup.

Tension as EFCC Arrests Ebonyi State Governor Umahi’s Brother

Austin Umahi, the brother to the current governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The man was arrested along with two others Chinyere Egwuche and Mabel Dikibo over a N400m slush fund linked to the 2015 presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to PM News, the suspects, all staff of Brass Engineering & Construction Nigeria Limited and Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort, were arrested for refusing to honour invitations by the EFCC over an ongoing investigation of both companies.

While Austin Umahi doubles as chairman of both companies, Chinyere Egwuche and Marbel Dikibo are also signatories to the companies’ accounts.

EFCC investigators alleged that the Director of Finance of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Nenadi Usman released N400m to the Ebonyi State chapter of the PDP for the 2015 presidential election.

The said fund, the investigators said, was moved from Fidelity Bank Abakaliki on March 27, 2015, to an Access Bank, Abakaliki, account, where one Maxwell Umahi further moved N100, 000,000 and N300, 000,000 respectively into the accounts of Brass Engineering & Construction Nigeria Limited and Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort respectively.

One of the suspects, Chinyere Egwuche, subsequently withdrew the N300 million paid into the account of Osborn La-Palm, which according to her, was used to finance the construction of Osborn La-Palm Hotels in Abakaliki, Uburu and Port Harcourt, while the N100m paid into the account of Brass Engineering and Construction Nigeria Limited was transferred to a certain David Umahi Faith Foundation.

Although investigation is still ongoing, EFCC operatives said the companies to which the funds were transferred were traced to the Ebonyi State governor.

Gov. Ayade’s Brother Arrested Over Alleged N2.4billion Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a brother to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers State over alleged N2.4billion contract scam.

Sources at the EFCC said that Francis Ayade was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the scam.

Mr. Ayade, managing director of Leophina Nigeria Limited and Hally Brown International Limited, was fingered in alleged shady deals involving diversion of public funds into his companies’ accounts.

“Specifically, four different allocations from the Federation Accounts were alleged to have been diverted into Hally Brown International Limited’s account owned by him,” an official said.

Investigations by EFCC operatives showed that Hally Brown International Limited was awarded a road construction contract to the tune of N2.4billion in 2011.

To finance the contract, Mr. Ayade allegedly took a loan of N350,000,000 (Three Hundred and Fifty Million Naira only) from First Bank Plc, on behalf of Cross Rivers Rural Access and Mobility Project.

The loan, was however, unused for the contract, but transferred into the Mobility Project.

Mr. Ayade has also been implicated in alleged suspicious transactions involving Obudu Micro Finance Bank, among other allegations.

Brussels Suicide Attack Brother Left Desperate Will

Belgian prosecutors said Wednesday that two brothers carried out suicide attacks at Brussels airport and on a metro train, with one of them leaving a desperate will in a trash can saying he did not know what do any more.

Ibrahim El Bakraoui blew himself up in the check-in hall of Zaventem airport while Khalid El Bakraoui attacked a metro train at Maalbeek station near the EU headquarters, Frederic van Leeuw told a news conference.

Prosecutors said the confirmed toll from the two attacks was 31 dead and 270 wounded.

Van Leeuw said Bakraoui’s “will” said he was “in a rush”, and “I don’t know what to do … hunted everywhere … no longer safe”, adding that “I don’t want to end up in a cell next to him”.

That appeared to be a reference to Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam, who is reportedly linked to Bakraoui, and who is in custody in Belgium after being captured last week.

The computer on which Ibrahim wrote the will was dumped in a trash can in the same street in the Brussels district of Schaarbeek where investigators found an unexploded bomb, an Islamic State group flag and bomb-making materials on Tuesday night.

Prosecutors confirmed that they had found 15 kilos (33 pounds) of TATP high explosive in the flat.

They also found chemicals including 150 litres of acetone, 30 litres of liquid oxygen, detonators, a suitcase full of nails and other bomb-making equipment including plastic trays, tools and ventilator.

A third man, who was filmed with Ibrahim and a second unidentified suicide bomber and who fled the scene without detonating his device, remains on the run, prosecutors said.

“The third man is on the run; he left his bag with the biggest bomb in it, which exploded later because it was so unstable. This third person remains unidentified and is still being looked for,” he said.

Court Sentences Man To Death By Hanging For Killing Own Brother

Justice Muhammad Abubakar Sambo of Bauchi High Court has sentenced a 27-year old man, Salisu Ali, of Zango village in Tafawa Balewa Local Government of the state, to death by hanging for committing culpable homicide.

The prosecution counsel, Sabiu Adamu Gumba, had told the court that the accused lured his seven-year old brother, Yusuf Ali, to the bush where he hit him with a stick, killing him instantly.

Mr. Gumba said the accused later cut off the penis of the deceased and gave it to his dog.

In a confessional statement, the accused confirmed that he killed Yusuf due to the misunderstanding between him and the mother of the deceased.

According to him, he did not take any intoxicant while committing the offence and the deceased did not engage him in a fight during the incident as he fell and died instantly.

The prosecution counsel presented his first witness, Aliyu Shehu, who is father to both the accused and the deceased.

He told the court that the deceased was sent to the market by his mother on the day he was killed to buy detergent only for him to be lured by the accused into the bush.

He said a good Samaritan informed him that he saw the accused with the deceased on their way to the bush.

The witness said some youth in the village later forced the accused into the bush where he showed them the body of the murdered boy.

In his judgment, Justice Abubakar Sambo ordered that the accused be hanged on the neck until he was certified dead.

Sisters Had Their Brother Killed For $200K Inheritance

A middle-aged mama’s boy set to be sentenced Monday for murdering his uncle was actually the puppet of a greedy family cabal, a Long Island lawsuit charges.

The children of victim Jonathan Frankowski Sr. claim in the civil suit that their cousin, convicted killer Jonathan Roman, 44, was acting at the direction of his mom, Sandra Roman, and aunt, Annmarie Porter.

The sisters wanted their brother, Frankowski Sr., dead so they could inherit another $100,000 apiece on top of the $200,000 each they were already getting from their late mother’s estate, the documents charge.

Frankowski Sr. had been named executor of their mother’s will after her death in 2013 — and his siblings were furious that he was slow in probating it, his kids say.

“To them, this money is everything,” Frankowski’s daughter, Kim Delany, told The Post on Sunday, referring to her cousin and aunts. “To them, it was a fortune, and they wanted that money as soon as possible.”

Frankowski’s son, John Jr., added of his relatives, “Clearly they’re a bunch of bumbling buffoons.”

“Obviously, had it not been for [our investigation], I truly believe that Jonathan and the rest of the family, in their mind, thought they were going to get away with murder,” he said.
