Dangote Promises To Assist FG Out Of Economic Recession

Dangote Group has pledged to support the Federal Government and Kano State in exploring key sectors of the economy to cushion the effect of the recession among Nigerians.

The Group said in a statement on Monday in Abuja, that it would explore opportunities opening up in agriculture, mining and infrastructure, through partnership with the levels of government.

An Executive Director of the Group, Hajiya Halima Dangote, made the pledge at Dangote Special Day ceremony at the Kano International Trade Fair in Kano.

The executive director, who was special guest at the event, represented the President of the group, Aliko Dangote. Dangote said challenges of the recession rather presented opportunities to explore areas of development and bring back the lost glory of Nigeria’s economy.

He said it was such determination that informed re-opening of Dangote Flour Mill in Kano as well as the Tomato factory processing project in Kadawa area of the state. Dangote said the project would have been fully operational but for the hitches caused by Tomato disease in the country and some technicalities.

He reiterated efforts by the group to ensure sustainability in rice production through extensive out-grower programme in Jigawa.

“It is our intention to establish a large scale rice mill of 250,000 tonnes per annum capacity in Kano, to process production in three states,’’ Dangote He re-emphasised that DANGOTE Fertilisers project, with capacity of 2.8 million tonnes per annum, the largest plant in sub-saharan Africa, would be inaugurated by the end of 2017.

Dangote commended the Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, and the government for their commitment to the business community “as demonstrated by the fair which attracted wide range of businesses from far and near’’.

He assured the chamber of the Group’s willingness to continue partnership and scale up its presence in the years ahead.

FBI To Assist Nigerian Military To Counter Terrorism

The counter-terrorism war of the Federal Government got a boost yesterday with a promise from the United States (U.S.) Government to send officials from its Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other security experts to the country.

They (FBI) operatives are to offer technical assistance to the Federal Government to deal with terrorism.

Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, Alan Tousignant, made the disclosure yesterday in Abuja when he led a security delegation to Interior Minister Abdulrahman Dambazzau.

The envoy said the delegation, including a team of the U.S Security Governance Initiative (SGI), was in the country as a follow-up to an earlier visit in January.

The SGI is an initiative of the U.S. Government that offers enhanced security technical assistance to six African countries, including Nigeria.

Mr. Tousignant said the delegation’s visit was at the request of the Federal Government to provide a holistic security technical assistance and not to donate any equipment.

He explained that the government identified three major areas of partnership to include enhancing the Ministry of Interior’s emergency response coordination, Ministry of Defence’s procurement procedure and the civilian security planning for the Northeast.

He said the week-long interaction between the SGI team and the Nigerian security agencies would fashion out a robust roadmap to ensure better efficiency, transparency and justice in Nigeria’s security architecture.

The SGI Team leader, Stephen Nolan, said both countries were working to finalise and implement a Joint Country Action Plan (JCAP) which was a document that outlined a roadmap for a successful partnership.

He said that the JCAP emphasised partnership and finding Nigerian solution to its security challenges not about what the U.S. was doing for Nigeria.

Mr. Nolan, however, assured that the forthcoming elections in the U.S. and the change of government in January 2017 would not affect the project as they had been working hard to ensure its sustenance.

He said: “I want to assure you that we have been working for the continuity and sustainability of this project, even after the Obama administration in January, 2017.”

Gen Dambazau thanked the delegation for the visit and expressed optimism that the partnership would help to re-position the security architecture of the country.

He said the partnership would involve all security agencies and not just those of the Ministry of Interior so as to fashion out a holistic security roadmap to deal with terrorism and other crimes.

The minister said that the meeting was in tandem with President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda to address security, corruption and the economy of the country in line with international best practice.

Indonesia Promises To Assist Nigeria In War On Terror

The Indonesian government says it is ready to provide assistance to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

The Ambassador of Indonesia to Nigeria, Harry Purwanto, made the promise at a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the nation’s capital city.

At the meeting held at the Minister’s office on Thursday, both countries had the opportunity to explore areas of mutual benefit.

In their talks, Mrs Ibrahim also sought an agreement on prisoner swap between the two countries, in an attempt to bring some Nigerians serving different jail terms in Indonesia back home.

Earlier, the Minister asked for the assistance of the Indonesian government in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency in the northeast.

Responding to the request, the Indonesian Ambassador said his government had also had to deal with the issue terrorism and would welcome an opportunity to assist Nigeria.

Mr Purwanto further stated that his country would also wish to explore the possibility of buying crude oil from Nigeria.

UK Offers To Assist Nigeria Tackle Boko Haram

The United Kingdom has offered to further assist Nigeria in its quest to end the violent activities of the Boko Haram sect by December.

The British Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Nicholas Houghton, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Thursday shortly after a closed-door meeting he had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Houghton said he was sent by his government because the United Kingdom shares an interesting security situation with Nigeria.

He said he was in the country to see how the UK could give the necessary support to the government and the President to ensure that the country optimises whatever support it could give Nigeria.

He said, “My concern is in the security situation, in particular the war being waged by Boko Haram.

“I think that Nigerian armed forces have made some remarkable progress in the last few months in pushing Boko Haram back.

“But as it comes to the end of the rainy season, I know the President has got a very strong ambitions  to what he can achieve by Christmas, it shows because the UK has a strong support for your troops training just to make sure we optimise our support and that is the best way we can.”

Israel, Brazil To Assist Nigeria End Boko Haram

Chief of Army Staff(COAS), Lt-General Tukur Buratai, yesterday appealed to the Brazilian government to help train Nigerian soldiers in jungle warfare.

This is even as the Israeli government promise to assist Nigeria end Boko Haram insurgency.

Buratai, who made the appeal when  he hosted the Deputy Chief of Army Staff for International and Special Affairs, Brazilian Army, Major-General Pereira Junior, in his Abuja  office, said the training was necessary to assist Nigeria wipe out insurgency and other security challenges in the country.

The COAS, while commending Brazil for its continuous support to the Nigerian Army, also declared the Army’s readiness to end terrorism soonest.

U.S. Will Assist Us To Recover Stolen Money- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said his administration had received firm assurances of cooperation from the United States and other countries in his quest to recover and repatriate funds stolen from Nigeria.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke while granting audience to members of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Adesina quoted Buhari as saying that it was now up to Nigeria to provide the international community with the facts and figures needed to drive the recovery effort.

He said he would be busy, in the next three months, getting the facts that would help in recovering the stolen funds. “In the next three months, our administration will be busy getting those facts and the figures to help us recover our stolen funds in foreign countries,” Adesina quoted the President as saying.

Citing the report submitted by the Ahmed Joda-led transition committee, President Buhari said that several revenue-generating institutions in the country had been compromised.

On insecurity, the President was also quoted as telling the traditional rulers that they would play a key role in stemming terrorism and insurgency in the country.

This, he said, they would do by assisting the government with cost-effective intelligence gathering.
