Anambra state gubernatorial election to hold November 18.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will hold the Anambra governorship election on November 18, 2017.

Solomon Soyebi, a national commissioner INEC, announced this at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

He said the 1999 constitution as amended, and the electoral act, had stipulated that the earliest day for the conduct of the election shall be October 18, while latest date for the election shall be February 14, 2018.

According to INEC timetable for the election, campaigns by political parties will start on August 18 and close by November 16, while primaries will be held between July 22 and September 2.

No political party has nominated a candidate for the election yet.

Although, some politicians from the state have tacitly expressed interest in giving a shot.

On Tuesday, Andy Uba, who represents Anambra south in the senate, formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

There are feelers that he may run for the office on the platform of his new party.

Willie Obiano, governor of the state, may also be seeking a second term.

JUST IN: PDP caucus asks Saraki to remove Andy Uba from senate.

The senate caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked Senate President Bukola Saraki to sack Andy Uba from the senate.

Uba, who represents Anambra south at the upper legislative chamber, formally announced his defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.

Speaking after Saraki read a letter conveying Uba’s decision on the floor of the senate, Godswill Akpabio, senate minority leader, asked the senate president to declare Uba’s seat vacant.

He also asked him to remove Uba as chairman of the senate committee on public accounts. But Saraki did not grant his requests.

Akpabio had made the same demands when three other senators from his party defected to the APC recently. But none was granted.

The PDP seats at the senate have plummeted to 41, while the APC maintains the majority seats of 65.

Soludo, Andy Uba, Ifeanyi Ubah vie for APC ticket in Anambra.

Charles Soludo, former CBN governor, and twelve other aspirants have indicated interest to contest for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election later this year.

Other contestants are Andy Uba, Ifeanyi Ubah, George Muoghalu, Barth Nwibe, Obinna Okonkwo and Paul Chukwuma.

The rest are Chike Obidigbo, Raph Okeke, Tony Nwoye, Uche Ekwunife, Obinna Uzor and Donatus Okonkwo.

Emeka Ibe, chairman of the party in the state, made this known to reporters in Awka, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Soludo, Ifeanyi Ubah, Andy Ubah have all contested for the governorship seat in the past, either on the PDP or Labour Party platforms, but failed.

Ibe added that there would be no automatic ticket for any aspirant. He said they would all participate in the state’s primary before a candidate would emerge.

“We will give all aspirants equal playing ground. There is no special interest in any aspirant,” he said.

“We will hold transparent primary for them because they are all qualified to unseat Gov. Willie Obiano.

“Any of them who emerges as our candidate in the state is capable of removing Obiano from office.”

He added that the party would embark on continuous membership registration exercise before the end of the month to accommodate those who want to join in the state.

However, Ibe said anybody with criminal records would not be allowed to join the party in the state.

He maintained that there was no zoning arrangement in the party, adding that new members would have equal rights as old ones.

I Was Not Involved In Ekiti Polls – Andy Uba

Senator Emmanuel Andy Uba representing Anambra South has refuted allegation that he was involved in the rigging of the last gubernatorial polls in Ekiti State.

It will be recalled that the army panel set up to look into the activities of its men in the controversial election, submitted its report on Monday. Even though it remains unclear whether Uba was fingered in the report, it has been alleged at different quarters that he worked with the military and swung victory in favour of the sitting Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

But reacting, the Senator in a statement issued from his office in the National Assembly today said he had nothing to do with the 2014 gubernatorial election in Ekiti State or any other election in the state in particular and the South-west geo-political zone in general.

” I have always deliberately defined my area of influence and political interest. While as a Senator of the Federal Republic and democrat, I take interest in Nigeria as a whole, I do not seek to interfere in local politics outside my state, Anambra and then Igboland. I don’t try to interfere in what goes on in other geo-political zone, except in the course of performing my constitutional duty as a federal lawmaker.

“I challenge whoever has any evidence or fact concerning my alleged involvement in the Ekiti gubernatorial polls to come out and prove it. This may just be a case of mistaken identity. I am a democrat and will not get involved in any act that will undermine democracy anywhere”, stated the Senator.
