Boko Haram Now Disguising As Menial Workers, DHQ Alerts Nigerians

Defence Headquarters, Tuesday,warned Nigerians to to be wary of people entering their communities as menial workers, saying it was a new strategy employed by the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists to get at their targets.

In a statement, by Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar,its Director of Information, the Defence Headquarters insisted that the terrorists, in their desperation to get at their targets, have resorted to disguising as menial workers.

The statement read: ”The Defence Headquarters wishes to alert members of the public of another antic being employed by the escaping Boko Haram terrorists that were smoked out of Sambisa forest by the combined efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Available information indicates that some fleeing Boko Haram terrorists are now disguising as menial workers to melt into communities and towns with a view to organising terrorists attack against our innocent citizens. The unfortunate recent incidents in Madagali and Maiduguri are instructive.

“The Defence Headquarters therefore advises citizens to be on the alert and be wary of these tricks of the defeated terrorists who are hell-bent on remaining relevant inspite of their lost battle.

“This sensitisation becomes necessary now to create security awareness to our citizens to be conscious of some strange faces that could take menial jobs in their communities or towns, especially now that festivities are around the corner. ”

NSCDC Alerts Public Of Fake Recruitment

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Benue has alerted the public of the existence of employment racket within the command.

The NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Shuaibu Jibrin, said on Thursday that the racket had been collecting money from applicants in the guise of offering them employment into the organisation.

Jibrin, however, assured that its searchlights had already been beamed on the perpetrators while explaining that all recruitment exercises by the organisation “are properly advertised through the mass media”.

He said, “Currently, the NSCDC is not carrying out any recruitment, the NSCDC recruits based on certain criteria and merit which is always advertised through the mass media.”

He said applicants had never been charged during NSCDC’s recruitment exercises, and assured that those behind the syndicate would soon be apprehended and brought to justice.

He also expressed regrets about the frequent vandalism of public utilities, especially pipelines and cables by unpatriotic citizens.

The commandant said the command had stepped up its surveillance activities over such public utilities to prevent the operations of the vandals.

He disclosed that three vandals had already been apprehended and were facing trial in the state.

He, however, advised authorities of the electricity company covering the state to ensure proper identification of its staff working on transformers and handling underground cables to avoid arrest by his men.

Jibrin also commended the state government for pledging to donate brand new tyres for their functional vehicles which had old tyres to enhance the command’s work in the state.

NAFDAC Alerts Of Fake Alcohol

The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians of the prevalence of fake alcoholic drinks, especially dry in the nation’s markets.

Dr Abubakar Jimoh, its Director, Special Duties, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Tuesday that the agency had continued to advise consumers of alcoholic beverages to be alert and be very wary of fake and unregistered drinks.

“Drinking alcohol is bad enough and people are always advised to take it in moderation; so, the danger associated with taking a fake drink can only be imagined,” he said.

Jimoh said that the agency had taken its campaign against fake drinks to Plateau, Gombe, Benue, Bauchi and many other states in north, and had engaged traditional and religious leaders to lead the efforts.

He particularly decried the rampant consumption of drinks like Ogogoro (dry gin) and `goskolo’ by youths, and urged stakeholders to join in the fight “especially since the youths are the group most affected”.

“We have found that the youths rely on such drinks to gather enough courage to commit all manners of atrocities like armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, killing and the rest.

“We have, therefore, continued to intensify our campaigns and that has resulted into some states coming up with bylaws that banned some alcoholic beverages.

“We have also raided production and drinking points of some of these dangerous drinks, especially in Edo and Delta States, because the drinks have damaged many livers, kidneys and other vital organs of the body.

“They have also led to the gradual decline in the health status of many youths and totally destroyed their capacity to contribute to societal development,” he said.

DSS Alerts Abuja Residents Of Planned Attack By Boko Haram

The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted Abuja residents over plots by Boko Haram militants to attack Churches, Mosques and Markets, using girls to bomb those places.

A memo by the Director of Security Services, Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Ibrahim, is urging religious bodies to put their members on the alert.

The memo addressed to the National Presidents of Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the Christian Association of Nigeria asked residents to report suspicious elements around places of worship to the authorities.

On Friday, unidentified suicide bomber detonated explosives during a Shia Muslim procession in Kano, killing 21 people and injuring several.

The blast took place in the village of Dakasoye, about 51km south of Kano.

Taskforce Alerts On Plot To Attack Jos

Special Task Force in Plateau State, Operation Safe Haven, OPSH, has alerted the citizenry of plan by terrorists to attack Jos, the state capital, and environs.

While calling on citizens to be on alert, the security task force urged them to pay particular attention to public spots such as motor parks, relaxation areas, markets, mosques and churches, among others.

A statement signed by Media / Information officer of OPSH, Captain Iweha Ikedichi, and made available to journalists at the weekend in Jos, said the action became necessary in view of security intelligence at its disposal.

Iweha said: “This is sequel to specific intelligence, which revealed the intention of members of Boko Haram terrorist group to carry out an attack on Jos metropolis.”

According to him, security operatives have consistently foiled attacks by the terrorists for two weeks running, ensuring increased presence of security personnel around identified flashpoints…”

Flood: NEMA Alerts Communities As Cameroon Releases Water From Lagdo Dam

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has alerted state governments and communities along River Benue of possible flood following information from Cameroonian authorities on plans to release excess water from Lagdo Dam.

In a release yesterday, Director General of NEMA, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi, said the Cameroonian authorities in Garuoa have indicated that between now and November 2015, there would be routine release of water from the Lagdo Dam due to excessive amount of water presently contained in the facility.

Sidi said the authorities have also warned “all those living around the dam and along River Benue in Garoua up to Nigeria side to be at alert and be ready for evacuation in case of possible flooding.”

He called on the frontline state governors, state Emergency Management Agencies, first responders and relevant authorities to alert the communities at risk, prepare safe locations for possible evacuation and adequate preparedness. The DG NEMA said the agency has dispatched the alert to the affected state governors and is following up with appropriate advocacy.

Firing Rehearsal Of 21 Gun Salute For Buhari’s Inauguration, Army Tells Public Not To Panic

The Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army on Monday in Abuja alerted the public on firing of artillery guns for Presidential Inauguration and Swearing in Ceremony come May 29.

This information is contained in a statement issued by Major Charles Ekeocha, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations in the Guards Brigade.

The statement quoted Ekeocha as saying “rehearsal for the Presidential Inauguration and Swearing in Ceremony has commenced since May 4 at the Eagle Square, Abuja.”

He said the rehearsal involved firing of the traditional 21 gun salute. He stated that “the practice session for the 21 gun salute will take place on May 20 and May 25, and on the inauguration day, May 29. “The public is hereby notified, especially those living within Asokoro area of Abuja and its environ not to panic at the sound of simulated firing of military weapons during the dates.”
