Nasarawa governor presents N67 billion budget

Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on Thursday presented an Appropriation Bill of N67.013 billion for 2017 to the state House of Assembly for consideration and passage.

Mr. Al-Makura, while presenting the bill christened “Budget of Reformation’’ at the floor of the state assembly in Lafia, said the budget was in compliance with International Public Sector Accounting Standard (IPSAS).

According to Mr. Al-Makura, N37.012 billion, representing 55.2 per cent of the budget is for recurrent expenditure while N30 billion, representing 44.7 per cent is earmarked as capital expenditure for 2017 fiscal year.

He said the budget represented a decrease of N13.9 billion against the 2016 budget of N80.9 billion due to the current economic recession.

The governor said the State Government decided to streamline the 2017 estimates along more realistic, pragmatic and achievable targets.

“This is due to the fluctuating Statutory Revenue Allocation (SRA) from the Federation Account and poor Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) occasioned by the economic recession,” he said.

He said the budget would focus on completion of projects aimed at boosting welfare of citizens and stimulate the economy out of recession.

Mr. Al-Makura said the budget would also be geared towards encouraging youth in agricultural production as a way of empowerment, boosting production, developing value chain and strengthening commercial venture for stable economy.

“The onus of moving out of this recession lies with all of us. The task ahead is no doubt Herculean and challenging but with collective determination, we would weather the storm,” Mr. Al-Makura said.

The Speaker of state assembly, Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, commended the state government on the performance of the 2016 budget.

He said the assembly pegged it at 70 per cent through their oversight functions, in spite of the economic recession.

He assured the people of the state that the assembly will live up to their expectation by studying the appropriation bill meticulously and pass it expeditiously.

Gov. Al-Makura Appeals For More FG Projects In Nasarawa State

Gov. Tanko Al-makura of Nasarawa State on Tuesday appealed to the Federal Government for the provision of more basic infrastructure for the people of the state.

The governor made the call when the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatude Fashola, paid him a courtesy visit in Lafia.

Al-makura said the state was neglected in the area of infrastructure development in the last dispensation and required urgent attention of the government because of its proximity to the Federal Capital Territory. According to him, Lafia is the only the state capital among the 36 states of the federation that is left with 33 KV line, “and it is most disheartening and a big paradox in our life as a state”.

“We have 330 KV line passing through Lafia to Jos, Makurdi and Enugu but because we have been the orphan state that has been so abandoned, so neglected because we did not belong in those past four years, there was no effort to drop the 330 KV lines which is just on top of Government House.” According to him, “power which is one of the most critical facilities for any nation to grow was so neglected in the state that the capital was left with only 33 KV line that comes from Akwanga and which is also used to supply other towns”.

He said each time the state requested for improvement, it was one complaint or the other; either the budget was not earmarked for that or many other things. “We were left to our fate and I am sure the present leadership will put smiles in the face of the people of the state.” Al-makura also appealed to the minister to construct more roads and houses in the state, considering its proximity to the seat of government. He said 60 per cent of work force from Abuja was residing in Karu and other neighboring towns. Earlier, Fashola said he was in the state to inspect the ministry’s projects, either ongoing or abandoned, to enable government to plan properly.

“My mission here is quite simple; we are on a nationwide and geo-political zonal tour of projects that the ministry is involved in, either executing, about to execute and so on and so forth,” he said. He, however, requested for land from the state government to enable the Federal Government to build more houses for the benefit of civil servants.

Maku Instigated Jonathan Against North – Al-Makura

Nasarawa State governor, Tanko Al-Makura has said the former minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, is responsible for pitching President Goodluck Jonathan against the North while in office, saying his divisive tendencies along ethnic and religious lines, helped fuel the recurrent crisis in Nasarawa State.

Maku, had at a press briefing in Abuja at the weekend, alleged among other things that innocent citizens had continued to be killed by gunmen as a result of what he described as the “insensitivity” in handling the security situation in the state by the state government which he claimed would have been addressed if he was sworn in as governor of the state in May, this year.

But in a swift reaction on yesterday, the Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Publicity, Ahmed Tukur, said it was rather unfortunate that Maku who had ignored invitations extended to him and other stakeholders on several occasions to brainstorm towards finding lasting solution to the communal crisis in recent past could make unguarded utterances when the state government has succeeded in overcoming the situation.

He alleged that the insecurity in the state in recent past became worse as there was an increase in the proliferation of arms and ammunition when Maku held sway as the supervising minister of Defence, insisting that the former minister should rather commend his boss for the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.
