Police arrest nurse, husband over wife’s death after abortion.

An auxiliary nurse in Sapele (name withheld) has been arrested by the police following the death of one Mrs. Loveth Oke (36), a mother of seven, who she allegedly performed an abortion on.

Also arrested by the police was the husband of the deceased, who allegedly compelled his wife to undertake the abortion.

It was learnt that the deceased on finding out that she was pregnant, had informed her husband, who in turn insisted on having an abortion, since they already have seven children.

The auxiliary nurse was said to have started injecting drugs into the deceased since last December, which led to complications. After taking the deceased to different hospitals, including herbal homes, she finally passed on last Friday.

The news of her death got to her family members, following which the deceased’s mother reported the case at the Sapele Police Station.

However, a police source confirmed that the nurse and husband of the deceased were currently undergoing interrogation, adding that the nurse had allegedly confessed to the crime.

Confirming the arrest, the police image-maker in the state, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, said the suspects were being detained at the State CID for further investigation.

President Trump ‘targets pre-marital sex, abortion’ in new executive order

President Donald Trump is planning to sign an executive order that will make government stop funding organisations in support of abortion and homosexuality.

The Nation, a newspaper in the US,  said it obtained a document which appears to be the new order.

The draft order seeks to create wholesale exemptions for people and organisations who claim religious or moral objections to same-sex marriage, premarital sex, abortion, and trans identity, and it seeks to curtail women’s access to contraception and abortion through the Affordable Care Act.

“Sexual relations are properly reserved for such a marriage, male and female and their equivalents refer to an individual’s immutable biological sex as objectively determined by anatomy, physiology, or genetics at or before birth, and that human life begins at conception and merits protection at all stages of life,” the document reads.

On religious grounds, the document provides total exemption for people or groups who do not provide employee health insurance that includes contraception, currently mandated under the Affordable Care Act.

Quoting legal experts, the publication said if signed, the order would likely violate the Establishment Clause of the US constitution, which is commonly referred to as the separation of church and state.

The newspaper said when it contacted, Sean Spicer, White House press secretary, he declined to make comments “ahead of the executive orders that we may or may not issue”.

“We have nothing on that front now,” he was quoted as saying.

Doctors Without Borders: 97% rate of unsafe abortions ‘occur in Africa’.

Up to 97 percent of unsafe abortions occur in African countries, including Nigeria, according to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

The organisation said it is important for women to have access to safe abortions because the complications associated with unsafe abortions – not carried out under medical supervisions – are dire and among the most common causes of maternal mortality in Africa.

In an interview published on MSF’s website, Catrin Schulte-Hillen, MSF adviser on sexual and reproductive health, said complications from abortions, including severe hemorrhaging, infections, and peritonitis cause injury, sterility, and even death.

“Abortions performed by untrained persons, and in poor sanitary conditions, can lead to fatal complications for women and girls,” Schulte-Hillen said.

“Complications due to unsafe abortions are among the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide.”

She emphasised on the importance of respecting the reason women and young girls want to have abortion.

Schulte-Hillen spoke about the risks MSF faces in the line of carrying out safe abortions, including “conflicts and repercussion”.

“Safe abortions are an obvious medical need, yet still very neglected. MSF must not give up on dealing with this problem just because “it’s complicated,” she said.

“We have to be ready to accept and deal with conflicts and possible repercussions while striving to reduce the risks for women.

“Confidentiality is also of utmost importance, in order to protect women and young girls who have chosen to have an abortion.”

Schulte-Hillen said MSF is committed to communicating, clearly, about abortion, explaining its medical mission, arguments, and justifications for providing women with safe abortions.

President Donald Trump to cut off funding to UN agencies that promote abortion.

The administration of President Donald Trump is planning to stop funding any United Nations (UN) agency that promotes “the performance of abortion or sterilisation as a method of family planning”.

It is one of a number of prohibitions in the executive order that sets up a process for reviewing all American contributions to the UN—and automatically eliminating many others.

Also on the chopping block is “any United Nations affiliate or other international organisation that grants full membership to the Palestinian Authority or the Palestinian Liberation Organisation”; any organisation “substantially influenced by any state that sponsors terrorism”; and any group circumventing sanctions against North Korea or Iran.

The draft order, if enacted, would be a significant expansion on the so-called Global Gag Rule, which was first implemented by Ronald Reagan in 1984.

It was overturned during every Democratic administration, but Trump reinstated and expanded by it this week.

The Global Gag Rule only restricts usage of federal funding to organisations that do not promote (or even mention) abortion.

Trump’s draft order goes further to include sterilisation, a crucial medical procedure for women in a world where an estimated 300,000 women die during childbirth annually.

The United Nations Population Fund is one of several UN organisations that would receive a “special review of funding” under the draft order.

UNFPA states as its aim “a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.”

The organisation fights against child marriage, female genital mutilation, and maternal death. In addition, the UNFPA has played a role in assuring that pregnant women fleeing conflict are able to safely give birth.

JUST IN: Donald Trump revokes U.S. pro-abortion law.

U.S. President Donald Trump has revoked the Presidential Memorandum on Mexico City Policy and Assistance for Voluntary Population Planning, which allowed voluntary abortion in the U.S.

Mr. Trump, who made anti-abortion policy one of his campaign promises, announced the revocation on Monday, according to a statement issued by the White House.

“I hereby revoke the Presidential Memorandum of January 23, 2009, for the Secretary of State and the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (Mexico City Policy and Assistance for Voluntary Population Planning), and reinstate the Presidential Memorandum of January 22, 2001, for the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (Restoration of the Mexico City Policy).

“I direct the Secretary of State, in coordination with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, to the extent allowable by law, to implement a plan to extend the requirements of the reinstated Memorandum to global health assistance furnished by all departments or agencies.

“I further direct the Secretary of State to take all necessary actions, to the extent permitted by law, to ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars do not fund organisations or programmes that support or participate in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilisation.”

Mr. Trump said “the memorandum was not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person”.

“The Secretary of State is authorised and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register,” the statement read.

With the revocation, Mr. Trump has barred U.S federal funding for foreign NGOs that support abortion, relaunching a battle that has long divided Americans.

The abrogation came just two days after women led a massive protest march in Washington to defend their rights, including to abortion.

The decision to ban foreign aid to groups that lobby in support of abortion rights is certain to deepen concern among already apprehensive U.S. family planning and women’s rights organisations, according to observers.

Stenny Hoyer, a Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, sharply criticised Mr. Trump for using his first week in office “to attack women’s health”.

“It should be no surprise to the millions of women and men who gathered in protest this weekend across the country and around the world that Republicans are focused more on making it harder for women to access health care than on the serious economic and security challenges we face,” the lawmaker said.

The restrictions imposed on Monday prohibit foreign nongovernmental organisations that receive U.S. family planning assistance from using non-U.S. funding to provide abortion services, information, counseling or referrals and from engaging in advocacy to promote abortion.

They were first put in place in 1984 by Republican president Ronald Reagan.

Later eliminated by Democratic president Bill Clinton, they were reinstalled by his Republican successor George W. Bush, and annulled again after Barack Obama took office.

Galvanised by Mr. Trump’s Nov. 8, 2016 election, abortion opponents in states where Republicans held power moved swiftly in December 2016 to adopt draconian anti-abortion measures that in some cases pose challenges to constitutional liberties.

Mr. Trump, meanwhile, has pledged to nominate an anti-abortion justice to the Supreme Court, which could lead to overturning Roe Wade, the emblematic ruling that legalised abortion in the U.S. in 1973.

Pope criticizes women who have abortions ‘to save their looks

Pope Francis on Wednesday took aim at the modern world’s obsessions with power, success and beauty, citing the example of a woman who had an abortion to preserve her looks.

In an anecdote he said dated from his time as Bishop of Buenos Aires, Francis recounted the story of a a very beautiful woman who was inordinately proud of how she looked.

“She said, as if it was natural, ‘Yes, I had to have an abortion because my appearance is important’,” the 80-year-old, whose papacy began in March 2013, said during his midweek public audience.

“When values such as physical beauty, health become idols to which everything must be sacrificed they create confusion in our spirit and in our hearts.

“Rather than promoting life, they drive us towards death,” he added in comments that also targeted “power, success and vanity with their illusions of eternity and omnipotence.”

Catholic teaching considers abortion as akin to the most heinous of murders.

Francis does not waver from that line but has authorised priests to absolve women who have had terminations, something which only a bishop could previously do.

Teenager arraigned for giving abortion drugs to teenage girlfriend

A teenager Olamilekan Yusuf, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly procuring abortion drugs for his 14-year-old girl friend.

19-year-old Yusuf, who resides at Turner Eradiri Str., Ajegunle, Lagos, is facing one charge of procurement of abortion drugs.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 27 at his residence.

He alleged that the accused, who was having affair with the 14-year-old girl, had slept with her on several occasions.

“When the accused discovered that his girl friend was pregnant, he convinced her to take abortion drugs, since they were not both ready to cater for a child now.

“The young girl started having severe stomach pains after taking the abortion drugs and she was also bleeding.

“The parents of the 14-year-old girl discovered that their daughter was acting strange and was also in so much pain, they decided to take her to the hospital for medical attention.

“The girl later confessed to her parents that Yusuf, who was responsible for the pregnancy, gave her drugs terminate the pregnancy.

“The case was reported to the police and the accused was immediately arrested,’’ Kokoye told the court.

Kokoye said the offence contravened provisions of Section 145 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Etti adjourned the case till Jan. 12, 2017 for further hearing.

Pope Francis empowers priests to forgive abortions.

Pope Francis on Monday extended indefinitely to all Roman Catholic priests the power to forgive abortion, a right previously reserved for bishops or special confessors.

Francis, who has made a more inclusive and forgiving Roman Catholic Church a characteristic of his papacy, made the announcement in a document known as an “apostolic letter” after Sunday’s close of the Church’s “Holy Year of Mercy”.

He said he wanted to “restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life” but “there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with (God)”.

Francis had already temporarily granted the power to all priests to give what is known as “sacramental absolution” for abortion during the Holy Year, from Dec. 8 to Nov. 20, but the solemn tone of his words in Monday’s letter suggested that change would last for at least the rest of his papacy.

“I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion. The provision I had made in this regard, limited to the duration of the Extraordinary Holy Year, is hereby extended …,” he said.

In Roman Catholic teaching, abortion is such a serious sin that those who procure or perform it incur an automatic excommunication, until it is absolved in confession.

In the past, only a bishop or a designated chief confessor of a diocese could grant absolution for an abortion.

Although bishops in some dioceses in developed countries such as the United States and Britain had already delegated this authority to parish priests, the old practice was still in effect in most of the world.

In a document last year, Francis described the “existential and moral ordeal” faced by women who have terminated pregnancies and said he had “met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision”.

US election: Americans voted Trump to end abortion – Bishop Ezeuku

Bishop Martins Ezeuku of Minna Catholic Diocese, has said that Americans voted Republican candidate, Donald Trump, as President-elect, because of his strong stance against abortion.

“Trump’s victory is a victory for humanity; Americans have made a statement – they do not like abortion and will not support whoever supports it,” Ezeukue told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday in Minna

NAN reports that Trump, a strong anti-abortion activist, floored his Democrats rival, Hilary Clinton, who is pro-choice.

“Abortion is a criminal offence; it involves killng of human beings and stopping them from coming into the world we are in,” he said.

The Bishop said that Americans voted someone that would not allow the killing of unborn Americans in the name of abortion.

He advised the President-elect to carry everyone along, irrespective of race, religion and ethnic differences so as to make for an even greater America.

Ezeuku also advised Tump to work toward uniting the world toward peace, prosperity and greatness, while striving to give hope to the hopeless.

Also reacting to Trump’s electoral success, Prof. Shehu Riskua, former Vice Chancellor, Uthmad Danfodio University, Sokoto, advised blacks resident in the US to conduct themselves properly so as not to clash with the authorities there.

Risqua advised Trump to carry everyone along towards a better world.

Student Allegedly Pours Bleach In His Girlfriend’s Drink To Force An Abortion

A college student in Millersville, Pennsylvania was charged with attempted murder on Friday after allegedly giving his pregnant girlfriend water mixed with bleach in an attempt to kill the foetus.

Theophilous Washington, 20, allegedly suggested his girlfriend drink the tainted water as she was leaving his apartment on Thursday evening. After she returned to her dorm room on campus at Millersville University, she suddenly “experienced a burning sensation in her throat before vomiting uncontrollably,” People reports. She then called 911 and was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that both she and the two-month-old fetus appeared to be unharmed.

Washington was arrested on Friday and charged with reckless endangering and criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder of an unborn child.

“The charges are twisted and the intended result nothing short of horrifying,” District Attorney Craig Stedman said in a statement.

Prosecutors added that Washington has admitted to putting bleach in the water bottle before giving it to his girlfriend, adding that, “He had stated previously that he did not want the female to have the child.”

Washington is currently in custody on $1 million bail. He has not entered a plea deal, and it is unclear at this time if he has retained an attorney. Additional charges may still be filed as the investigation continues.

Pastor Accused Of Rape, Abortion Of 13 Teenagers Says, ‘I’ll Marry All The Girls’

THE General Overseer of Tongue of Fire Restoration, Chukwuma Nwkocha, who was accused of abduction, defilement and illegal termination of pregnancies for about 13 teenagers has defended himself.

The 34-year-old indigene of Imo State said he was only aware he slept with one of the girls, Kingdom, adding that he promised to marry the 17-year-old girl. He also said he might marry all the girls if that would bring about peace.

The pastor stated that the parents of the girl and some of his parishioners were aware of his relationship with the her. “I only slept with Kingdom and I have the intention of marrying her. I know she is much younger, but I have seen in the country that a 15-year- old girl got married to a grown up man and it was not a problem. Her parents were aware of our relationship but they are not aware that we were having sex.
According to him, “one Pastor Stephen carried out abortion for Kingdom, and told her that he was not in support. Stephen also said he asked Nwkocha if he slept with the other girls and if he was aware that about six of the girls were pregnant.

Responding, the Pastor said, “I didn’t not sleep with them, I only gave them shelter in my church. I was trying to be a good pastor. When I come to church, these girls would say that they wanted to come and spend weekend at my house. I kept on dodging them, but one day I was placed in a tight corner, when one of the girl’s mother came to me and said that they had accommodation problem.

“I could not have turned down her plea, but she persisted that her daughter could be with me, so I helped out and it turned out like that for everybody. I couldn’t help one and leave the other. I also trained them in school”, he stated.

He also argued that the girls were not found in his house, but in the church, which was where they stayed.

Doctor Rapes Woman During Abortion

A doctor allegedly raped a woman during an abortion procedure two weeks after he masturbated in front of her during a physical examination, a court has heard.

According to Tribune 242, after Dr. Gerald Mark Forbes informed the 20-year-old she would need a medical examination to work at his clinic in Freeport, the Bahamas, last February, he was alleged to have rubbed her vagina and masturbated before her.

The report added that two week’s later, after the victim asked him to terminate a pregnancy, he was accused of raping her during the procedure.

The 47-year-old is also said to have given the alleged victim a packet of Methotrexate, a drug used to induce abortions.

The defendant told the police as heard by the Grand Bahama Court that the woman was a ‘friend of a friend’, who simply worked at his office for two months. He denied the allegations of rape and indecent assault.

However, he refused to answer officers when asked about the alleged incidents, telling them he ‘had nothing to say’.

The court was told that in a WhatsApp exchange that took place after the alleged rape, the doctor told the woman he didn’t owe her salary because he had provided her with medication.

During the police interview an officer told him, “The virtual complainant informed you that she will not return to work because she was uncomfortable that you violated her, and you said you were sorry she felt that way and you told her to still come in for follow-up and medication.”

The trial resumes at 11am on Friday.

Tongues are wagging in Ijare, Ifedore council area of Ondo state over the death of 20 year old National Diploma (ND)  Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) student of the state owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Wunmi Agbeluyi after a herbalist allegedly helped her to terminate the pregnancy.

However, detectives in the Ondo State Police command have picked up  the herbalist who allegedly put the deceased in the family way and in a desperate bid to terminate the pregnancy gave her some concoction to drink in order to flush it down . He is currently being quizzed at the Special Investigative Bureau (SIB).

Reports from Police detectives indicated that the  deceased who is now an orphan was the daughter of a herbalist. The suspect, according to findings is an apprentice to the father of the deceased when he was alive. Vanguard gathered that the suspect has been showing interest in the deceased  before her father’s death but was hindered because the late father disapproved of the relationship.

But when the father later died, the suspect walked his way into the heart of the deceased and a relationship ensued and he begin to fend for her. Some years into the relationship, the unexpected reportedly happened  and the suspect reportedly prepared a concoction for his lover to terminate the unwanted pregnancy.

It was gathered that the lovers agreed that they were not ready to be parents hence the option of an abortion. The deceased was said to have taken the concoction and after some days she developed severe abdominal pain. Sensing that trouble was knocking at his door, the suspect was said to have rushed her to a private hospital where the doctor who was recently picked up and quizzed by detectives helped them to evacuate the remnants of the pregnancy.

After the flushing by the doctor in the private hospital, her persistent complaint of abdominal pain made the suspect to relocate her to the State general hospital where she later gave up the ghost. While all these were happening the deceased did not confide in her sister (Funke ). A friend by name Omololu reportedly informed her that the deceased was admitted to the state hospital after which she rushed there to meet her sister in pain.

The deceased according to sources informed her sister that the suspect gave her a concoction to drink and that the pain started since then. The suspect reportedly told Funke that Wunmi was rushed to the hospital when she complained of abdominal pain. He did not disclose to her that he gave her concoction in a bid to terminate her pregnancy.

However, reports had it that the lovers also did not open up for the doctors that attended to her at the State hospital until she gave up the ghost. Vanguard gathered that it was after she died and taken back to Ijare for burial that the cause of her untimely death was exposed.

Some sympathisers informed the deceased’s sister what actually happened before the suspect rushed the deceased to a private hospital where the remnants of the pregnancy were flushed out and was referred to the state hospital where she later died when the pain did not subside.

Funke and other family members reported the matter to the traditional of Ijare- Olujare of Ijare who advised them to lodge a complaint with the Police. The suspect and the medical doctor were later picked up  and detained. Speaking with Vanguard, the sister Funke said that the deceased was the last born of the family.

According to her, “it was a friend called Omololu who informed me that my sister has been admitted in the State specialist hospital and was critically ill. “ I rushed to the hospital to meet my sister in pain complaining of stomach ache. She insisted that the doctors should not give her injection or drips as prescribed.

“While we were in the hospital Wunmi refused to disclose why she was given the concoction. According to her, the deceased later died in the hospital and was buried on Sunday in Ijare. “It was after the burial that people came to me and narrated what really happened to my sister

“I informed the family members and we reported the matter to the Olujare of Ijare who asked us to lodge a formal complaint with the Police. “I was informed that someone gave her concoction to abort the pregnancy but when she complained of abdominal pain, she was rushed to the hospital “I was later informed that  the doctor in the private hospital billed them N25,000 and an initial deposit of N20,000 was paid. It was the doctor that helped them to flush out the remnants of the pregnancy.

“But when the pains persisted I learnt she was rushed to the specialist hospital where she later died. “Funke said the family would want justice to be done and pleaded that the police should not sweep the matter under the carpet. “We will pursue the matter to a logical conclusion and those behind the death of our last born should be made to face the music”, she said.

Contacted, the Police Image Maker Femi Joseph said the suspect is in police custody. Joseph assured that the matter was still under investigation and findings would be made public.

Doctor, Nurse Land In Court After Aborting 6 Months Old Pregnancy Of 31-Year Old Lady

According to Tribuneonline, a man who claimed to be a medical doctor, Taiwo Ogunlana and a nurse, Kafayat Oyekola, have been arraigned before an Ebute Metta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for carrying out an illegal abortion on one Miss Kemi Awoniyi.

Ogunlana, who claimed to have attended Lagos State University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing between 1979 and 1983, worked with the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.

He was also said to have been sponsored by the hospital authorities for Post-Basic Theatre course in 1987 and is presently the proprietor of Amu Medical Clinic registered by the Lagos State Private Hospital Authority and situated at 4, Church Street, Dalemo.

He told the court that Awoniyi was brought to his facility on July 6 at about 6:30 p.m. by the nurse.

He said the nurse told him that the lady had taken some drugs which resulted in abdominal pain for three days.

“When I checked her, I discovered that there was a foul odour emanating from her vagina and protrusion of the foetus which was already dead.

“The lady was cleaned and taken to bed to relax before going home. I charged N25,000 for the treatment but she said that she would contact her boyfriend whom I have not met before.

“This she did and the boyfriend said he would require my bank details to send money to me which he did not send up till now.”

He added that Kemi said she wanted to go home because she was afraid that her father would find out.

It was gathered the the victim was six-month pregnant before the abortion was carried out.

Speaking at the court, the nurse said the lady came to her and told her that she was having body pains because of some tablets she used.

“I asked her to come back on Monday which she did and on that day, I realised that she had a very bad odour coming out of her body.

“I took her to a doctor in Sango Ota who checked her and discovered that the tablet she took had affected her pregnancy,” the nurse said.

The charge against the duo read: “That you, Taiwo Ogunlana and Kafayat Oyekola, on the 6th day of July 2015 at Oke-odo area of Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully carry out abortion on one Oluwakemi Awoniyi, aged 31 years and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 145 of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The two of them pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The magistrate, Mr. L.A Layeni, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in the like sum. The matter was adjourned till August 31.

UN Urges FG To Relax Abortion Laws For Boko Haram Victims

UN Human Rights Chief, Zeid Al-Hussein, has appealed to Nigerian authorities to ease abortion restrictions for women and girls who had been sexually enslaved, raped and forced into so-called “marriages” by Boko Haram fighters.

He said this on Thursday in New York while discussing with the Human Rights Council on Boko Haram’s rights violations and abuses, the findings of a 12-member team to Cameroon, southern Niger and the north-eastern regions of Nigeria on Boko Haram.

Al-Hussein said interviews had confirmed that during their captivity lasting for months or even years, women and girls were sexually enslaved, raped and forced into marriages.

The Rights group chief said as a result of this, many survivors of the horrific experiences are now pregnant for their rapists.

Al-Hussein also drew attention to the situation of many formerly captive women and young girls, who are pregnant and their reported wish to terminate these unwanted pregnancies.

“I note that abortion is legal in Nigeria only when the life of the woman is at risk. Human rights mechanisms have consistently called for ensuring access to safe abortion services beyond the protection of the woman’s life, including in cases of rape, and to preserve the health of the woman,” he said.

Mozambique Lifts Homosexuality, Abortion Ban

Mozambique decriminalized homosexuality Monday when a new penal code came into force that swept away old Portuguese colonial laws, in a victory for campaigners for gay rights.

The old code, dating back to 1886, targeted anyone “who habitually engages in vices against nature” — though no known prosecutions took place after Mozambique became independent in 1975.

Breaking the law was punishable by up to three years of hard labor. “It’s a symbolic victory, as social inclusion remains the main challenge,” Frank, a student gay rights activist who declined to give his full name, told Agence-France Presse. The new penal code, which was announced last December by then President Armando Guebuza, also decriminalizes abortion after lobbying by civil rights organizations.

Women can now end a pregnancy until the 12th week. Extraordinary circumstances, such as rape or threats to the mother’s life, allow for the procedure until the 16th week.

The code came into force on Monday, though no official events or celebrations were scheduled to mark the occasion.

The majority of African countries outlaw homosexuality, but Mozambique has seen little anti-gay violence or social friction over the issue.

Dercio Tsandzana, an influential blogger and activist, said there had been an absence of public discussion over homosexual rights. “The government instead abides by the external pressure put by some embassies and foreign donors,” he said.

“Most Mozambicans don’t deny homosexuality, but one can’t say either that it is accepted.“

Despite a seven-year campaign, the Mozambican government has not officially recognized Lambda, the only gay rights organization in the country.

United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA) Suggests Abortion For Boko Haram Babies

The Foundation for African Heritage (FACH), a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has kicked against plans to help girls who were raped by boko haram terrorists secure an abortion.

THIS DAY reports that FACH registered its displeasure after the United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA) and some foreign NGOs suggested that the rescued girls be sent to the abortion clinics to have their babies aborted or that abortion be legalised in Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of FACH, Mr. Sonnie Ekwowus said that having experienced unspeakable trauma, dehumanisation and violence in the hands of their Boko Haram captors, it is unreasonable and illogical to subject the girls to a traumatic, violent-wrecking and life-threatening abortion
process.

She added that FACH members were offering free maternity homes and rehabilitation homes where the girls could willingly go to safely give birth to their babies and afterwards could give them out for legal adoption if, for any reasons, they do not want to keep them

“He Beats Me Everyday… I Can’t Leave Him”- Anonymous

I’ll start with an apology for not revealing my identity. This is because he’ll know I am referring to him, so I remain anonymous.

black-woman-domestic-violence-16x9

We have been seeing each other for 9 years and I can count the days he did not slap me or hit my head and even beat me, just four months into our relationship. His entire family already knows me and we were meant to get married married 5 years ago but he is not financial buoyant enough to pay for my bride price and marriage rights, so he asked me to move in with him till he raises the money and I know he is working hard towards that.

My only problem is that he has a very bad temper and uses his hands on me at the slightest aggression. The last one was when I asked him how far with his plans for our wedding. He said I was entertaining advances from other men who are probably lying to me about marrying me. He also said that I am very ungrateful because he has been trying his best to cater for me and that I know how hard he works, but I have the nerves to ask him that question. Before I could justify my question, his entire body pounced on me.

We have done 3 abortions because he said he cannot afford to cater for me and children at the same time for now. God knows I love him but God also knows that I am already tired of waiting to be his wife. Please how do I solve this whole problem without leaving him?
