Petrol Tanker Explosion Kills 14 In Niger State

A petrol tanker skidded off the road and exploded in central Nigeria, killing at least 14 people on Friday, witnesses told AFP.

They said eight houses were razed following the accident which happened around 8:00 am (0700GMT) in the transit town of Tegina in Niger state.

“We buried 14 people including a six-month-old baby who died in the tanker explosion this morning,” said Muhammad Sani who took part in the rescue operation.
Eight more victims were taken to hospital with burns, two of them in “very critical condition” while eight homes were burnt in the inferno, said another resident Abdullahi Egiworo.

A spokesman for Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state confirmed the accident, but refused to give casualty figures.

“We received reports of an accident involving a petrol tanker in Tegina this morning but we are still awaiting details,” Bitrus Max told AFP.

He said emergency officials were heading to the scene to assist in the evacuation of victims.

Accidents involving petrol tankers happen frequently on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads because of speeding and disregard for traffic rules.

Last month, three people were killed when a petrol tanker collided with a trailer and exploded on a road linking Nigeria’s commercial hub of Lagos with the rest of the country.

Nigeria Police Rescue 14 Kidnapped Oil Workers After Gun Battle

The Rivers Police Command said it has rescued 14 oil workers abducted by unknown gunmen on Sept. 2 along Elele-Omoku road.

The command`s spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, a DSP, said in a statement in Port Harcourt that the workers were freed in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr. Omoni said the Command`s Tactical Units, engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, which lasted for one and half hours, to rescue the victims.

“The Oil Workers were rescued unhurt due largely to the efforts of the Command’s Tactical Units, who, at the early hours of Sept. 18,engaged the hoodlums, in a fierce gun battle which lasted for one and half hours, leading to the rescue of the victims.

“The hoodlums took to flight abandoning their hostages. Efforts are on to arrest and bring them to justice,” he said.

Mr. Omoni said no ransom was paid to rescue the workers.

“They have been debriefed and are receiving medical attention in the hospital.

“Investigation is on-going at the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit,” he said.

Herdsmen Kill 14 In Fresh Plateau Attack

Suspected Fulani herdsmen , Sunday night,  invaded the Kwata, Zawan area of Jos South local government killing about 14 people, all of them women and children.

The Spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, Op SH, Captain Ikedichi Iweha who confirmed the incident on phone said, “12 women and children were killed in the attack and we are still investigating the incident.”

Vanguard gathered that the attackers stormed the village which is few kilometers away from the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS at about8.30pm, holding villagers hostage and shooting sporadically.

But the Op SH spokesman stated, “What happened at Kwata was a reprisal attack. Two Fulani men were killed at Wereng village in Riyom local government area of Friday. We are looking for the village head of the community for questioning.

“12 people who are women and children were killed at Kwata, we got a call at about 8:30pm, our troop got to the scene at about 8:43 but the attackers had already fled but we are investigating the incident.”

State Reduces Ministries From 23 To 14

The long-awaited list of commissioners to be presented to the Niger State House of Assembly by Governor Abubakar Sani Bello is ready and ministries are to be reduced from 23 to 14, investigations have revealed.

It was gathered that Governor Bello has already directed the Office of the Secretary to the State Government to issue a circular on the reduction of ministries in preparation for the submission of the list of commissioners to the State Assembly.

It was learnt that the list of the commissioners is ready and will soon be transmitted to the State Assembly for the consideration of the legislators.

Mysterious Ailment Kills 14 In Ondo

A strange ailment has broken out and killed about 14 people in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State, south west Nigeria.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju, said the disease, discovered on Wednesday, is strange and it’s symptoms include headache and loss of sight.

He informed that local and international health institutions are already carrying out investigations on the causes and treatment of the ailment.

Dr Adeyanju also allayed the fears of the residents of the area and the state, stating that the situation is under control.
