NDLEA set to recruit 10,000 officers next year

Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said the federal government has approved the recruitment of 5000 staff in the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), in addition to 10,000 in 2017.

Malami, who spoke at the ECOWAS ministers meeting, said there are plans by the federal government to improve the capacity of the agency in relation to fighting crimes in the region.

Malami, who urged member countries’ ministers to adopt the new ECOWAS Regional Drug Action Plan, for the year 2016-2020, said it provides a roadmap and working document for the ECOWAS drug control team.

Commending Nigeria’s effort to tackle drug trafficking at the national level, the ECOWAS director in charge of Drug Control, Sintiki Ugbe, said Nigerian government has shown political commitment by approving the recruitment of workers to widen the NDLEA capacity and further develop a national drug control master plan.

“We see and applaud that kind of political commitment in the region. We also want to see the translation of political commitment into real actions,” Ugbe said.

The raid was carried out, Weekend, on the building which houses a top European High Commission’s Visa Processing Centre opposite the National Defence College, Abuja.

A source close to the operation confirmed to Vanguard on Monday that the operatives broke into the Safe kept by the former vice president and removed whatever valuable they found, including top branded wrist watches, assets declaration forms, and list of landed property.

The raid, it was learnt followed the discovery that one of Sambo’s aide, known as Daboh, was found to have collected the sum of N25 million from the embattled National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisah Metuh, as part of the sum he got from the former NSA, Dasuki Sambo.

Although Daboh was arrested on January 11 by the EFCC and later released after taking statement from him, the operatives swooped on the ex-VP’s office on Saturday with the hope of extracting ‘incriminating evidence’.

Oprah Winfrey To Donate $100,000 In Support Of Girl Education In Nigeria

Oprah Winfrey has said she will donate $100,000 in her Selma and The Butler co-star David Oyelowo’s honour to the GEANCO Foundation, which specializes in providing vital healthcare and education needs to girls in Nigeria.

Oyelowo and Oscar-nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) are both involved with the foundation and coincidentally both British actors of Nigerian descent who have been friends since they were teenagers.

Oyelowo told THR his concern in helping improve the sexism, health and education standards in Nigeria has partly been fueled from watching the lives touched by Oprah, an influential woman whom he now calls a mother figure.

The money from the Oprah Winfrey Foundation will transform two schools in Nigeria, sponsored by Ejiofor and Oyelowo, providing children with the proper learning supplies (computers, books, notebooks) and medicine.

Buhari declares 270 cattle, mud houses, N30m, others • Osinbajo worth $900,000, N94m and more

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday made public details of their assets, which had been declared to the Code of Conduct Bureau.

According a statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President has about N30m in his only bank account with the Union Bank Plc, while the Vice President has a balance of N94m, $900,000 and 19,000 pounds in his bank accounts.

Shehu’s statement said the President had shares in Berger Paints, Skye Bank and Union Bank and a total of seven houses, comprising two mud and a standard house in Daura, his hometown; two homes in Kaduna, one in Kano and one in Abuja.

Also belonging to the President are two undeveloped plots of land in Kano and Port Harcourt. The President did not ascertain the location of the Port Harcourt land, according to the statement.

Buhari also has an orchard and a ranch in Daura with 270 heads of cattle, 25 sheep, five horses, a variety of birds and a number of economic trees in them.

But the statement did not disclose the worth of the landed property and other assets, which both the President and the Vice President had declared.

Shehu said the President had no oil well and foreign bank accounts.

Buhari was also said to have declared that he had several cars, two of which he said were bought with his savings and the others supplied to him by the Federal Government in his capacity as a former Head of State.

Buhari’s and Osinbajo’s assets“The rest were donated to him by well-wishers after his jeep was damaged in a Boko Haram bomb attack on his convoy in July 2014,” the statement added.

For the Vice-President, Shehu said Osinbajo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, declared a four-bedroomed residence at Victoria Garden City in Lagos; three-bedroomed flat in Ikoyi, Lagos; two bedroomed flat at the Redempion Camp, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; and a two-bedroomed mortgage property in Bedford, England.

The vice president operates his Simmons Cooper Law firm, which is based in Lagos and has shares in MTN Nigeria, Octogenerium Ltd., Windsor Grant Ltd., Tarapolsa Vistorion Ltd., and Aviva Ltd., all of which are based in Lagos.

Osinbajo is also said to have one Infinity 4-Wheel Drive SUV, one Mercedes Benz and a Prado Jeep.

Shehu’s statement read in part, “The documents submitted to the CCB, which officials say are still being vetted and will soon be made public, show that prior to being sworn in on May 29, President Buhari had less than N30m to his name. He also had only one bank account, with the Union Bank. President Buhari had no foreign account, no factory and no enterprises. He also had no registered company and no oil wells.

“The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) who had been a successful lawyer before his foray into politics declared a bank balance of about N94m and $900,000 in his bank accounts.

“President Buhari declared however that he had shares in Berger Paints, Union Bank and Skye Bank.

“The documents also revealed that President Buhari had a total of five homes, and two mud houses in Daura. He had two homes in Kaduna, one each in Kano, Daura and in Abuja. One of the mud houses in Daura was inherited from his late older sister, another from his late father. He borrowed money from the old Barclays Bank to build two of his homes.

“President Buhari also has two undeveloped plots of land, one in Kano and the other in Port Harcourt. He is still trying to trace the location of the Port Harcourt land.’’

Reacting to the declaration of assets by Buhari and Osinbajo, a lawyer, Carol Ajie, said the documents had loopholes.

Ajie said Buhari and his deputy needed to “make clear if they have liabilities or not, bearing in mind that the Constitution places emphasis on assets and liabilities.”

The lawyer said, “We need a bit more on specificity on some of the items such as shares in Berger Paints, Union Bank and Skye Bank, considering the length of time between April when he won the election and now, a period of six months for assets valuation of his seven houses located in Daura, Kano, Kaduna and Abuja.

“We have no addresses on these houses and what type of houses-bungalow, block of flats or duplexes- and estate valuer’s estimates. Same for his farms, orchard and a ranch in Daura, etc.

Another legal practitioner, Mr. Kayode Ajulo, said the President had yet to complete the declaration “as it is the law that his spouse is not a civil servant; the spouse must declare her asset in the same manner as done by President Buhari.”

“The same goes for his Vice. As it is, there may be likelihood of violation of the law on declaration of assets,” he added.

President of the Nigerian Voters Assembly, Mashood Erubami, said the declaration signified leadership by example.

Erubami said, “This is leadership by example. The declaration will leave no one in doubt about the commitment of the Buhari/Osinbajo administration to govern transparently and be accountable to Nigerians before and after office. With the declaration of the President, nobody will be spared from not declaring his or her assets in accordance with the laws of the land.

“It is now left to the Code of Conduct Bureau to vet the declared assets in order to ensure that the assets are real and appropriately valued. The assets must not be overvalued, and must be vetted to have been fairly acquired with truly extended current market value. Declaration of assets is a precondition for selfless, transparent and accountable government, which must not be sparing and selective.”

OMG! See What Tyga Bought For Kylie On Her Birthday

Newly-blonde Kylie Jenner was given a white Ferrari by her boyfriend/husband/fiancé whatever for her 18th birthday.

The reality TV star celebrated her birthday with a knees-up at The Nice Guy in LA with friends and family, including rapper Tyga who Kylie is rumoured to be dating or could possibly be MARRIED to. We certainly think this pressie confirms that something is going on between them.

The party then moved on to another LA venue, Bootsy Bellows where Tyga took the opportunity to present Kylie with his little gift worth a mere $320,000 (about £200,000 in British speak) that was wrapped in a red ribbon. Aw, bless.

Understandably, Kylie was stunned but got over her shock to take it for a little spin with her mum, Kris Jenner.

According to the Daily Mail who deferred to car lovers mag Auto Express for Ferrari facts, the posh car has a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox that “shifts in the blink of an eye”.

Wow, we love nothing better than a fast-moving seven-speed clutch gearbox. And neither does Kylie by the looks of it.

And that’s not all: “The standard ceramic brakes deliver massive stopping power.” Nothing says love like massive stopping power.

Most Generous Couple Feeds 4,000 Syrian Refugees On Their Wedding Day

A couple in Turkey swapped out lavish nuptials with their friends and family for the bread line with thousands of Syrian refugees.

Last Thursday, Fethullah Üzümcüo?lu and Esra Polat doled out food to 4,000 Syrian refugees for their wedding reception on the border town of Kilis. The bride wore an elaborate white dress, with a tiara perched on her headdress, and the groom sported a white tuxedo with black trim. They stood behind large food trucks distributing meals to hungry Syrians. The couple had decided that instead of hosting their friends and family for a traditional banquet reception, they would feed the victims of a bloody civil war next door.

The idea came from the groom’s father, who volunteers for a Turkish relief organization called Kimse Yok Mu (KYM). For the past few years, KYM has distributed daily meals to the thousands of impoverished Syrians who’ve flooded across the nearby border. He approached a representative of the organization and proposed that the family would cover part of the costs of feeding refugees for the day (the family did not want to reveal the exact cost).

“I thought that sharing a big delicious dinner with our family and friends was unnecessary, knowing that there are so many people in need living next door,” he told the Independent blog i100.

Then he told his son, who was surprised by the prospect, but soon won over.

“When he told that to the bride she was really shocked because, you can imagine, as a bride you wouldn’t think about this—it’s all about you and your groom,” says Hatice Avci, the international communications manager for KYM. “In southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need …They love to share their food, their table, everything they have. That’s why the bride also accepted. And afterwards she was quite amazed about it.”

So, they arrived at KYM’s distribution center on Thursday to spend the day serving food and taking photographs with their grateful recipients. “Hopefully this will also give the start for other wedding dinners to be held here with our brothers in Syria,” the groom told local news.

Over 250,000 Barrels Of Oil Siphoned Daily, PMB Raises Alarm

President Muhammadu Buhari has raised the alarm that oil theft continues at the moment with an average of more than 250,000 barrels being siphoned daily.

Speaking yesterday on the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) programme tagged “Good Morning Nigeria”, Buhari promised  that he would soon ensure that those committing that crime against Nigeria are faced with facts and prosecuted.

He said crude was  being illegally loaded from the country’s terminals by unpatriotic Nigerians that only considered  their own selfish interests to get money.

Besides, Buhari said his government had to maintain a high level of confidentiality in order not to risk the lives of people in Nigeria who were helping to trace the destinations of the stolen crude and the accounts the proceeds were being paid into.

The president said:  “I don’t think the NNPC knows how many accounts are there in which payments are made on Nigerian crude. The monumental fraud has been going on for a number of years.  A lot of Nigerians cannot comprehend it”.

Buhari said foreign countries were  willing to let go of the looted oil funds but Nigeria had to comply with their own system by getting the documents, especially the shipping papers.

Speaking on the report that he planned to unbundle the NNPC, Buhari said: “I read the story too that I intend to break the NNPC. I think the best way to go about it to first establish the fact of the magnitude of the inexplicable way the NNPC conducted itself.”

Abortion Pills To Be Delivered To Poland In Drone To Counter 50,000 Illegal Annual Abortions

A drone is set to deliver medical abortion pills to Poland where nearly 50,000 dangerous underground abortions are reported to take place every year.

The “abortion drone” is being sent by a Netherlands-based non-profit organization, Women on Waves, and will arrive in the Polish town of Slubice on Saturday.

Since 1993, Poland has initiated strict pregnancy termination laws, which only permit women to have abortions for severe health reasons or in the case of rape or incest.

The drone’s mission is to drop several packages of World Health Organization-approved pills that will be picked up by women’s groups and distributed to those in need.

Although abortions are illegal in Poland, women cannot be imprisoned for terminating a pregnancy, but the doctor who carries out the operation can face up to two years in jail.

“We can’t stop pointing out the lack of safe access to abortion and medical abortion pills. It’s a violation of women’s rights. We have to make every effort to make sure they get that access,” RT quoted Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, the founder of the rights group, as saying on Monday.

Gomperts said although the move is not “illegal” under present “regulations or laws”, she was not sure “what the government’s going to do” in reaction to the abortion drone.

Don’t Pay $50,000 To See Me Or My Husband, Aisha Buhari Warns

Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has warned that anyone who demands $50,000 to enable him see her or her husband should be disregarded.

Speaking at an appreciation dinner she hosted for women and youths at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Saturday, she said whoever demands money to facilitates his or her seeing her or her husband was neither working for the President nor the All Progressives Congress, APC.

She said: “I will like to inform you that in the past regime, whether it is true or false, only God knows. Some people were going round, parading themselves as personal assistants. If you wanted to see the First Lady, you will pay $30,000 or $50,000; and if you are seeing the President, you will pay all that you have gathered in your lifetime.

“This will not happen in our regime. Whoever asks you to give a single penny in the name of coming to see the President or his wife is not our staff. He is not an APC member; it is a lie. Don’t be deceived.”

She stated that there was nothing people did not say about the past administration, stressing that it was not former President Goodluck Jonathan that was not good but the people around him.

The President’s wife said the people that are going to be around her husband have to be very careful because the election ended peacefully.

“We are praying and hoping that people around him should know that it took him 12 years to get to that position and they must know that they are coming to serve the masses, not President Muhammadu Buhari in person.

“It is the people that are around him that will determine the political health of our state.

“I am so delighted to stand before you today as the wife of a former Head of State and today being called the wife of the President. It was such a long journey and we thank God it ended this way; we really thank God.

“I want to thank all Nigerian women and youths for the crucial roles they played towards the success of the last elections. I am very much aware of your steadfastness during the election campaigns up till the elections proper,” she said.

She explained that in line with the philosophy of her husband, the administration would be open to all Nigerians.

While noting the challenges faced by the country in the areas of security, unemployment and corruption, she said the responsibility to solve the problems should not be left for the government alone.

Mrs. Buhari also used the occasion to explain that her husband never put her in purdah.

She urged Nigerians to come up with practical solutions, collectively and individually, that would facilitate answers to the ills of the society, especially women issues.

“Even, by the recent campaigns, it was Bola Ahmed Tinubu who insisted that I should come out and support my husband. Not that I never liked supporting my husband but it all depended on the people around him. And now, it is the people around him that said they wanted me to participate; we did and we have seen the difference.

“My husband is a gender- sensitive being, having so many girls as his own biological children and then having me as his wife. Then, you can see the generation gap. He allowed me to go to school. To cut the story short, he is the pillar of my success.

“The women of Nigeria are not asking for equal representation but a fair representation.

“As you are all aware, they were the major voters; we constitute more than 50 per cent and in the end, we found out that the number of female legislators that we used to have declined. I do not think this is fair to women. We feel we are not adequately represented.

“We should now make it as a mission in the next four years, to fight for fair representation of women in both leadership and decision-making bodies,” she said.

She also spoke on the high rate of divorce in the North, widowhood in the South and female students’ harassment in higher institutions, demanding that something be done to solve the problems.
