The UN is to dispatch the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Central Africa, Abdoulaye Bathily to Congo Brazzaville to consult with national authorities and relevant stakeholders in order to defuse tensions.

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, made this known on Wednesday in New York.

He said that he was deeply concerned about recent reports that security operations undertaken by the government in the Pool
region allegedly resulted in attacks against civilians.

He said the attacks also led to the displacement of the population from the affected areas.

Ban also said he was troubled about restrictions on access to the region, which hampered adequate information gathering, evaluation and reporting on the situation.

The secretary-general urged the government to ensure that humanitarian and other relevant actors were granted access to the affected areas and population.

He also urged that security forces act in compliance with the country’s obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law.

The secretary-general condemned all acts of violence and called on all parties to show restrain and to engage in constructive and inclusive dialogue in the aftermath of the presidential election.
