All Acts Of Violence In Burundi Served No Purpose – UN

UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, on Monday, said all acts of violence in Burundi served no purpose other than to worsen the already volatile situation.

He made this known in a statement issued in New York while condemning the assassination of Brig.-Gen. Athanase Kararuza,
his wife, and daughter in Bujumbura.

Kararuza was until September 2015 ,the Deputy Force Commander of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

The UN boss extended the world body’s condolences to all affected by the tragic loss.

He said the assassination of Gen. Kararuza came in the wake of several instances of politically-motivated assassination attempts in Burundi in recent weeks.

This, he said, include Sunday’s attack on Martin Nivyabandi, the Minister of Human Rights, Social Affairs and Gender, as well as those on prominent members of the security forces.

The secretary-general called for rigorous and prompt investigation of the attacks, noting that political process was the only way Burundians could put the country back on the path of national reconciliation and peace.

He urged political leaders, including those in exile, to firmly renounce the use of violence in pursuit of political agendas and commit to an inclusive and genuine dialogue.

Ban said the UN would continue to support all efforts aimed at promoting peaceful settlement in Burundi.
