Miner kicked By Turkey President Erdo?an’s aide struggling to pay fine for damaging official car

Miner Erdal Kocab?y?k was kicked by President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s aide Yusuf Yerkel as he was held down by security forces.

A miner who was kicked by an aide of President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an in the Soma district of Manisa during a protest says he is struggling to find the money for a TL 548 fine that he was ordered to pay for damaging an official car in Erdo?an’s convoy.

Photos of Erdo?an’s aide, Yusuf Yerkel, kicking the miner, Erdal Kocab?y?k, as he was held down by security forces made the rounds in the Turkish and international media in May 2014, days after Turkey’s worst mine disaster, in which 301 miners were killed. Kocab?y?k, who lost a relative in the explosion, kicked one of the cars in Erdo?an’s convoy in anger. Yerkel, who saw what Kocab?y?k was doing as he was entering the car, rushed toward him and kicked him three or four times. According to witnesses, bodyguards interrogated Kocab?y?k after he had kicked the car.

Months later, a court ordered Kocab?y?k to pay a fine of TL 548 ($187) for damage to the official car caused by his kick.

In remarks published in Turkish daily Hürriyet on Saturday, Kocab?y?k said he will do his best to find the money because he has been told by his lawyer that he may face prison if he fails to pay the fine. The miner added, “I have difficulty understanding how my kick damaged the armored car enough to have to pay this fine.”

After the incident in Soma, Yerkel received a doctor’s report showing that his right leg — the one he had used to kick Kocab?y?k — had been injured in the incident. The report excused Yerkel from work for seven days.

Kocab?y?k, who is also being tried for violating a law on staging demonstrations, has not found job in other mines in Soma and has been unable to find steady employment in other occupations, forcing him to support his family with small amounts he earns from temporary jobs.
