Drivers barricade Ife highway to protest robbery attack

Some drivers of luxurious buses on Monday barricaded the Ife-Ilesa Expressway expressway in protest of the robbery incident which occurred on the road over the night.

The angry drivers stated that some robbers took over the road since last night until the early hours of Monday morning.

The protesting drivers stressed that robbery cases were frequent on the road, insisting that the protest will continue until the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola addresses them. They drove away the policemen drafted to the area to restore normalcy and have demanded to see the commissioner of police.

A motorist identified as Sanya who was trapped in the gridlock said the driver took over the road since 4am on Monday.

“We are close to 1000 vehicles trapped in the traffic snarl now. I have been here for over two hours and there is no exit road to take. We are stuck in the mess,” Sanya noted.

“Many newspapers delivery vans are here before dawn and there is no way anybody can escape except the road is cleared,” He added.

The gridlock caused by the angry protesters is said to be causing hardship for other road users.

The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Kola Sodipo while confirming the incident noted that he has dispatched his men to the scene of the incident.

” I have sent my men there. I learnt that the robbery didn’t happen this morning but it has happened before,” Sodipo said.
