Couple Accused Of Planning To Join IS

A couple of Mississippi newlyweds are accused of trying to catch a flight to join the Islamic State group, say authorities.

Policeman’s daughter Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and 22-year-old Muhammad Dakhlalla were detained at an airport in Columbus.

The couple, who wed in June, made their travel plans with undercover FBI agents on social media, officials say.

The US citizens allegedly planned to travel to Istanbul, using the ruse of a Turkish honeymoon, before making their way to Syria.

Young and Dakhlalla appeared before a court in Oxford, Mississippi, on Tuesday.

Denying bail, the judge said the defendants’ desire to commit terrorism is “probably still there”.

During online chats, Young allegedly praised the shooting at military sites in Chattanooga, Tennessee , which claimed the lives of five US servicemen.

“What makes me feel bette[r] after just watching the news is that an akhi [brother] carried out an attack against US marines in TN!” the former Mississippi State University chemistry major allegedly told an undercover FBI agent online on 17 July.

“Alhamdulillah [Thanks be to God], the numbers of supporters are growing.”

Dakhlalla said he wanted to use his computer science skills to help IS, but then planned to fight for the group, according to officials.

“I wish to be a mujahid akhi [holy warrior]. I am willing to fight,” Dakhlalla allegedly told an undercover agent.

“I want to be taught what it really means to have that heart in battle!”

But the couple appeared to know little about Sharia law, say officials.

The defendants were also sceptical of Western media reports that IS uses sex slaves.

Young and Dakhlalla are charged with attempting and conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist group.

They could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 (£160,000) if convicted.
