Plans reportedly hatched by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State to attack the Governorship/House of Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal constituted for the state, have been uncovered. Sources believed to be privy to the plans hatched in Port Harcourt, disclosed that the plans will include street protests and castigation of the Court of Appeal for moving the sitting to Abuja.
According to the source, the plot is meant to be well-funded by a top politician based in Abuja who previously, had funded anti-Governor Chibuike Amaechi campaigns. With another recently declared winner of a controversal elections, this Abuja-based politician and wife to a top Nigerian politician, was reportedy in the Rivers State capital, where they reportedly agreed to push their loyalists to the streets. They will expectedly protest against the Abuja venue for the Tribunal.
In announcing the constitution of the Tribunal for Rivers State last week, President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zinab Bulkachuwa, said the relocation was due to insecurity.
Not less than 4 governorship candidates who participated in the April 11 election have said they would contest the resukts declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. Several other candidates have indicated the willingness to challenge results returned by INEC in respect to Federal and state legislatures. In the original plan, the protest were billed to kick-off in Port Harcourt on Monday, April 21.
