Jos To Tackle Street Traders With Water Spray

The Plateau State government has threatened to use water spray on street traders and hawkers. It added that if arrested, they would be arraigned before a mobile court.

The state government through the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), yesterday handed out leaflets to traders and hawkers around the city with a warning to relocate to satellite markets or face the consequences.

The leaflets also indicated that defaulters will have their wares destroyed.
However, some neighbourhood kiosk owners around British-America, who spoke with Daily Trust, said it was unfair for JMDB to include them in the relocation plan, adding that the directive should have focused on “traders around Terminus who constitute a nuisance.”

Yohanna Bitrus, who sells soft drinks in the area, said: “We have no where to go to; we live here and that is why we sell here. We have kiosks so we are organised. They should go and focus on traders around Terminus.”
