PNP Rally: After #BringBackOurGirls, What Next? – @versatileNaija

On May 17, 2014, Philly Nigerian Professionals (PNP) and friends organized a #BringBackOurGirls solidarity rally titled “Green and White Rally for Peace”. PNP  is a professional networking group run by Chioma Azi and myself (Monale). It was established with the goal of  strengthening connections among Nigerian and Nigerian American professionals and students in the Philadelphia area through social, networking, professional development and charitable events. We also support other African based organizations and individuals world-wide in their efforts to pursue similar goals.

Since the news broke of the abduction of over 234 school age girls by Boko Haram, PNP has sought to create awareness about the issue on social media platforms, as well as news stations (See Here, Here and Here for our interviews with TV stations in the Philadelphia area). Despite the fact that a previous rally had been held in Philadelphia (Read more about it here). PNP felt it was important to keep the conversation going around the missing girls, and also urge Nigerians in diaspora to come together and join the demand for good leadership/governance in the country.

We cannot deny that Nigeria has taken a turn for the worse. Crime is now a common feature in our society, and the level of insecurity is alarming. Nigerians are dying by the numbers due to man made conditions ranging from Boko Haram attacks, to ethno-religious violence or ethnic wars, extra judicial killings, armed robbery, road accidents, collapse of defective infrastructures, plane crashes, etc. Although death is inevitable, a lot of the senseless loss of lives could have been prevented with good governance and adequate oversight of various infrastructures through the appropriate institutions.

People ask how something like this could happen in Nigeria? My response is, how could it not? Our leaders have looked the other way while Boko Haram attack innocent citizens with impunity. They have lined their pockets with Nigeria’s wealth, while the masses suffer on a daily basis to eke out a living. Their response to national tragedies is a condescending address to the nation, after which they return to their parties, politiking  and other social activities.

Why then were we surprised when they failed to address the issue of the missing girls until after three weeks? Why did we expect them to do any different from what they’ve done in the past, which is ignore the pain and suffering of the average Nigerian citizen. Not only has the Nigerian government failed to live up to the responsibility of ensuring the safety of lives and property, they have failed to empathize with the families who are missing loved ones as a result of their negligence.

With the aforementioned in mind, PNP decided to organize a rally that not only spoke to the need to return the Chibok girls home to their families, but also raise awareness about the necessity of demanding more from our leaders. We can’t continue to align ourselves along ethnic and religious lines, while ignoring the necessary qualities needed for effective leadership such as integrity, competence, knowledge about complex issues facing Nigeria as a country, a desire to bring about positive change by acknowledging and attending to all stakeholders (citizens and the various constituencies) among other leadership traits.

The truth is #BringBackOurGirls will die down eventually. We hope and pray that it will end with the girls being found in good health. But after all is said and done, what next? Will we go back to our lives and put this behind us? Will we praise or blame the government for whatever the final outcome is, and then forget about the pain and sorrow that we all shared as a country because of our missing sisters? Or will we use this as a platform to address other issues plaguing out country. Issues such as:

  1. Bad governance
  2. Corruption (which includes stealing and mismanaging resources)
  3. Inadequate education due to incessant strikes and lack of a conducive learning environment for students
  4. Infrastructural deficiencies (roads, electricity, water, etc.)
  5. Insecurity
  6. Terrorism
  7. Continuous Ethno-religious crisis
  8. Unemployment, among a myriad of other issues plaguing the country.

2015 is around the corner. The same people who have failed to create and maintain initiatives that will develop Nigeria, will once again contest with false promises and empty agendas. When this happens, remember the numerous victims of the various bomb blast attacks carried out by Boko Haram. Remember the countless lives lost on Nigeria roads, plane crashes and collapse of defective structures. Remember the millions of unemployed youths in the country and also the terrible state of our educational institution and system as a whole. Remember the pain and suffering of our missing sisters/daughters and their families. With all these in mind, ask yourself, can we afford to live with these conditions for another 4 years? Can we afford more of the same mediocre and incompetent people in leadership positions?

For me, the answer to that question is NO!!! Nigerians all over the world should care about what goes on in the country. Do not stay silent while evil thrives in our nation. More importantly, vote wisely in the 2015 election. Good leaders = Great nation!

On that note we (Me, PNP, most Nigerians) say #BringBackOurGirls, #EradicateTerroristFromNigeria and #DemandGoodLeaders.
