UNICEF Commends Plateau For Working To End Violence Against Children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Plateau Government for inaugurating an action plan to end violence against children in the state.

The UNICEF Communication Officer in Bauchi, Mr Samuel Kaalu, announced this in a statement issued in Jos on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Plateau became the fourth state in Nigeria to inaugurate such campaign on Sept. 29.Inaugurations of similar action plan across the country are responses to a report of a survey conducted in 2014 by the National Population Commission (NPC) with support from UNICEF and other agencies.

The survey revealed high prevalence of violence against children in Nigeria, which necessitated the inauguration of the National Action Plan on violence against children in September 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kaalu said the UNICEF would also render all the needed support to the Plateau government to reduce violence against children both in the state and the entire country.

American Artistes Are Scared Of Working With Me– Don Jazzy

Supreme Mavin Dynasty (SMD) boss, Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy opened a can of worms when he lashed out at American artistes in an interview with TheCable, that they are scared of working with him.

According to him, most American artistes usually chicken out of working with him because they do not have the guts to stand up to the quality of what he dishes out.

“Most of these American artistes would call you, they believe you have something that they like, so they call you to come and try something out. A bunch of people that I have tried to work with or have tried to work with me chicken out at the end of the day because they aren’t really ready for the music change; they want me to tweak it till it gets back to their sound. I can give you your sound, but then, you called me for something and then I try to give to my sound and I want you to do your thing on top of it which would give the sound a wider recognition but they say they aren’t ready for this switch drastically. I think they are still scared” Don Jazzy said.

Canada Working With Nigeria To Defeat Terrorism- Calderwood

The outgoing Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Perry Calderwood, has said that Canada’s government has been working with Nigeria to defeat terrorism through various trainings for the Nigeria police, especially in investigation techniques.

“Though globally, terrorism has become common, but there must always be effort to contain its spread. Beyond this, we have been engaging in inter-communities’ dialogue to sustain peace in states like Benue”, Calderwood said during an exclusive interview.

He also pointed out that in response to the humanitarian needs in the Lake Chad Basin region, Canada recently announced a plan to provide more than $26 million for humanitarian assistance in 2016. ‘’This will help to provide food, drinking water, hygiene, sanitation and health services, treatment for acute malnutrition and support for livelihoods for vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons and communities hosting refugees’’.

He explained that in achieving this, his country is partnering with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the World Food Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the International Committee of the Red Cross Action Against Hunger, among others.

On corruption, Calderwood revealed Canada has specifically told the Nigerian government: “If there are funds that have been traced to Canada, there are mechanisms in place for our government to respond to this kind of request. It’s through our Federal Police and through our Justice department and the contacts are there already.

“People feel frustrated that it takes time to retrieve funds that may have been stolen and stashed in Canada in form of real estate or something…but remember that in any country that respects rule of law, certain procedures must be followed. A government simply just doesn’t have power to seize something and return it somewhere. You have to go through the legal processes.”

He pointed out that the international community, including Canada, has worked very hard to strengthen rules and prevent illicit funds from flowing in the first place.

Group Accuses N’Assembly Members Of Working 15 Days & Pocketing N13bn

Is it true that members of both arms of the National Assembly who recently embarked on annual recess have only worked for about 15days since their inauguration on June 9th?

This was the poser raised by the Team Leader of Media Integrity and Coordinator, Projekthope, a pressure group seeking a better Nigeria, Steve Aborisade.

Aborisade in a press release, said the recess which came barely few days after the National Assembly had remained shut due to leadership crisis was a great disservice to the nation.

According to him: “A situation which has ensured that they have sat for legislative business for only about 15 days since their inauguration three months ago, but in the process collectively pocketed over N13 billion within same period in allowances with not a single bill to their names is an indictment of the character and texture of the personalities of individuals occupying both chambers of our national assembly…”

Oyegun at the national Secretariat of APC yesterday, during a visit by the Association of Northern Students on the occasion of his 76th birthday and one year in office as national chairman of APC, said the President will appoint his ministers in a few weeks.

“What some of us in the progressive movement that has now transformed into governance of this country cannot accept is that the nation needed to be as bad as it is today. Yes, the circumstances of last 15 years ago are different, the nature of economy is different, people have evolved but the basic fact remains the same and that is for any nation, for any government to have any legitimacy, its key emphasis and the whole justification for its existence must be the welfare of the people, who have entrusted that party or that leader with the governance of their common affairs.
