Shiites Warn Of Dire Consequences Of Continuous Detention Of El-Zakzaky

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria ( IMN), also known as Shiites, has warned of the consequences of the continued detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.

El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in detention since December last year following a clash between the Shiites and the Nigerian army in Zaria, Kaduna state.

The judicial commission of inquiry set up by the Kaduna state government to investigate the clash had in its report blamed Zakzaky for the incident which led to the loss of many lives and recommended that he be investigated and prosecuted.

The Islamic group in a statement on Wednesday in Kaduna, demanded for the unconditional release of Zakzaky, warning that it will be a tragedy of monumental proportion if the Islamic leader who is said to have sustained eye injury goes blind.

“We demand that our Leader and the wife must be released unconditionally without delay. It will be a tragedy of monumental proportions should our leader go blind in detention or suffer further physical disability due to him being denied access to adequate medical attention” the statement declared.

The statement signed by Ibrahim Musa, the President of the Media Forum of the IMN also alleged that those that are keeping Zakzaky in detention were doing so to humiliate him and make sure that he goes completely blind and render him powerless before releasing him.

The IMN said “We understand those that sanctioned his detention and those detaining him want to humiliate him and make sure that he goes completely blind before he is eventually released thereby rendering him powerless the moment he is released from unconstitutional and illegal detention.

“The health of our leader and the wife continues to deteriorate on a daily basis and those holding him in custody are playing politics with his detention and that of his wife.

“We urge the Nigerian people and the international community to intervene in this crude violation of the fundamental rights of our leader. The Nigerian constitution and laws do not sanction detention without trial.

“We still insist that our leader should be taken to court if those holding him believe that he has committed any offence known to the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, otherwise he must be released forthwith”.

Musa said, as a peaceful organization the IMN has been demanding for the release of Zakzaky and his wife from detention through all known peaceful and legitimate means, but rather than release them , “the Department of State Services (DSS) claimed that the our leader was being held in protective custody”.

Ijaw Youths Warn EFCC Against Alleged Plan To Arrest Jonathan

As the four-day burial programme for the late former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, ended yesterday with a thanksgiving service in Ammasoma, the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) cautioned against an alleged plot by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The umbrella body of Ijaw youths worldwide urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the anti-graft agency to shelve any such plan to persecute the former president, insisting that such a move would spell doom for the country and the government.

At a press conference to mark the end of the burial programme , the IYC President, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, said almost everybody that had close relationship with the former president had been arrested by the EFCC.

The IYC president particularly condemned the recent arrest and detention of Jonathan’s cousin, Mr. Robert Azibola , a contractor over an alleged $40million financial fraud.

Eradiri said Ijaw youths would not allow Azibola, Jonathan or any rising Ijaw leader to be persecuted by the EFCC the way the Federal Government dealt with the late Alamieyeseigha.

He said: “They have arrested almost all our people. Azibola was arrested by the EFCC and we are calling on the EFCC to stop persecuting him further and charge him to court if there are issues.
“They detained him for a long time forcing him to make statements to indict former President Jonathan. Azibola was a businessman, contractor and has the right like every Nigerian to get contracts. Why will the Niger Delta case be a different one?”

He added: “We noticed that the same way they persecuted Alamieyeseigha has continued. After Goodluck Jonathan, our people who contributed in that administration are being persecuted by this government.

“The recent one is the ploy to arrest Goodluck Jonathan which is unfolding everyday. This must stop. President Goodluck Jonathan is the most performing president that Nigeria has ever had. We are proud of him. Everyday there is a calculated attempt to whittle down the achievements of President Jonathan. We call on Nigerians to mount pressure on the government to focus on leading Nigeria aright rather than looking for ways to bring down the achievements of Jonathan.
“Buhari should please focus on governance rather than persecution of people who have added value. We are not happy about it and today we use Alamieyeseigha’s death as a point of contact. The world has seen that from Alamieyeseigha it has trickled down to all the Niger Delta people.”

New Virus Deadlier Than Ebola, Zika To Emerge, Scientists Warn

Scientists have warned that humans should brace for the emergence of a new virus that could be deadlier than Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or Zika.

The scientists in a study published on March 14, 2016, edition of the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, titled “SARS-like WIV1-CoV poised for human emergence” said outbreaks from zoonotic sources represent a threat to both human as well as the global economy.

A zoonotic disease is a disease that can be passed between animals and humans.

The scientists are already bracing for a potential outbreak of the new SARS-like virus.

They warn the new virus, called WIV1-CoV, may induce the same results in humans as SARS – starting out with flu-like symptoms and accelerating rapidly to pneumonia.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Bat SARS-like coronavirus WIV1, (Bat SL-CoV-WIV1) also sometimes called SARS-like coronavirus WIV1 that is W1V1-CoV, is a newly identified CoV isolated from Chinese rufous horseshoe bats. The discovery confirms that bats are the natural reservoir of the SARS virus. Phylogenetic analysis shows the possibility of direct transmission of SARS from bats to humans without the intermediary Chinese civets, as previously believed.

The scientists say this virus may never jump to humans, but if it does, WIV1-CoV has the potential to seed a new outbreak with significant consequences for both public health and the global economy.

According to the researchers, the capacity of this group of viruses to jump into humans is greater than originally thought. While other adaptations may be required to produce an epidemic, several viral strains circulating in bat populations have already overcome the barrier of replication in human cells and suggest reemergence as a distinct possibility.

The researchers wrote: “Focusing on the SARS-like viruses, the results indicate that the WIV1-coronavirus (CoV) cluster has the ability to directly infect and may undergo limited transmission in human populations. However, in vivo attenuation suggests additional adaptation is required for epidemic disease. Importantly, available SARS monoclonal antibodies offered success in limiting viral infection absent from available vaccine approaches. Together, the data highlight the utility of a platform to identify and prioritize prepandemic strains harboured in animal reservoirs and document the threat posed by WIV1-CoV for emergence in human populations.”

Nigeria May Slide Into Recession, Experts Warn

Experts yesterday warned that if urgent and strategic steps are not taken to revive the current economic slowdown, Nigeria may slide into recession.

Speakers painted a gloomy picture of the economy at the 21st Nigerian Economic Summit, NES, warning that if the country is allowed to slide into recession, it might be very difficult to come out of the situation as a developing nation.

In his country scenario presentation at the summit with the theme: ‘Tough Choices: Achieving Competitive, Inclusive Growth and Sustainability’, Partner/Head, Advisory Services, KPMG, Kunle Elebute, stated that if not careful, Nigeria might slide into recession, a position he said is difficult to come out of, especially for developing countries.

He stressed the need for government to, as a matter of urgency, begin to make inputs that drive revenue such as providing credit guarantee on long term to investors on infrastructure, increase power generation as well as education and investing in research.

He also emphasised on the need to reform the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, and other revenue collecting agencies, improve collection administration and expand the tax base, total reform of petroleum subsidy scheme, reduction of Joint Venture, JV, funding by 50 per cent and seek alternative financing.

Fraudsters Alert: Chibok Girls’ Parents Warn Nigerians

The parents of the abducted female students of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno, on Sunday alerted the public on the activities of some fraudsters using their names to defraud Nigerians and corporate bodies.

Yakubu Maina, the chairman of the association of parents of the abducted girls, raised the alert at a news conference in Maiduguri.

“We wish to alert Nigerians and corporate organisations on the existence of some individuals and organisations masquerading as parents of Chibok girls to defraud them of their money,” Mr. Maina said. “The call became necessary because this group have turned the agitation for the release of our daughters into a scam.”

Mr. Maina, supported by the secretary of the association, Lawan Zanna, lamented that the fraudsters often deceived some parents of the girls into attending their functions only to be duped.”

“We have realized that the whole thing has been turned into business by individuals who pretend to be fighting our cause,” he said. “Some real parents had been lured to attending meetings with highly placed individuals in Abuja and beyond only to discover that they have been short changed by these individuals.”

He said that 14 parents of the abducted girls have died due to heart related diseases.

“Fourteen parents have so far died since the abduction of our girls in 2014,” he said. “Most of them died due mainly to heart related diseases and trauma.”

Don’t Create Problems For Incoming Govt, APC Warns Jonathan’s Men

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has warned officials of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Administration to desist from creating more problems for the incoming government of General Muhammadu Buhari.

The party also decried the reported allegations of last minute looting of the nation’s resources and the hurried recruitment into public service and rushed privatization of key financial institutions by the administration claiming such egregious actions will have serious repercussion.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, he said the party has been inundated with calls and messages by concerned Nigerians alerting the party of unscrupulous actions of some officials in the government of President Jonathan.

He said, “While the Jonathan Administration remains in office till midnight of May 28, governance in the country will not stop because a new President has been elected but the outgoing Administration must not create any more problems for the incoming government than it had already done or to tie the new government’s hands through some suspicious actions”.

“For example, the National Council on Privatization which is headed by the Vice President has just approved the financial bid opening for transaction advisers for the privatization of the three Development Finance Institutions in the country, the Bank of Agriculture, Bank of Industry and Nigeria Commodity Exchange. The question is: What is the rationale for rushing this exercise with just weeks left for this administration? Also, there have been reports yet un-refuted of a planned hurried recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS) after a previous attempt ended in a national tragedy and the fleecing of innocent job seekers by mindless federal government officials. Apart from the fact that this last-minute recruitment is suspect, it is irregular” he added.

Mohammed went further, ”The Civil Defense, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPSB) is only empowered to recruit, promote and discipline only senior officers (levels 8 and above). The power to recruit, promote and discipline junior officers is vested in the different services, in this case the Nigeria Immigration Service. Therefore, the recruitment exercise now being conducted by the Federal Civil Service under the auspices of the Presidential Committee to Assist on Immigration Recruitment usurps the functions of the Board as it relates to recruitment of Senior Officers (level 08) and that of the Immigration Service as it relates to Junior Officers (levels 07 and below)”.

He, however, said the APC will not waste time in probing the Jonathan administration, but will get down to work upon assumption of office. “While it is true that the incoming Buhari Administration will not get itself bogged down by an endless probe of the activities of the Jonathan Administration, all actions taken since the result of the March 28 presidential election was announced may come under the searchlight”.

The party also questioned the rationale behind the rush in the recruitment exercise and privatizations.

He stressed, “We do not know if this report as well as others is true. But if indeed these rushed privatizations and hurried recruitment exercises – in the twilight of the Jonathan Administration – are true, they raise serious questions concerning the reasons behind such actions. We are therefore compelled to call on President Jonathan to call his Administration officials to order lest they engage in actions that can later embarrass his Administration”.

The association stated that despite previous assurances from the government to reimburse the marketers for under recovery as verified by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, it had failed to honour the agreement.

APC Warns Deeper Life to Stop Misleading Christians

APC has warned the Deeper Life Bible Church and its founder, Pastor William Kumuyi to stop misleading Nigerians. The party was reacting to comments credited to the church advising Christian clerics to stay away from politics.

Pastor Kumuyi, who was represented by the Delta State overseer of the church, Senior Pastor Obinna Nkemjika, had during  a media briefing in Asaba, argued that a cleric, who involves himself in political activities, had engaged in mundane things and lacks the vision for his pastoral calling.

The party has, however, disagreed with the church, noting  that the people would not be liberated from the shackles of oppression if anointed men of God do not take up the mantle of leadership.

Isaac Adaka Adakpo, State Publicity Secretary of the party in Delta State,  noted that  the era has come for politics to be christianized.

He stated that Christians have no reason to complain if the ungodly ones find their ways into the helms of affairs because they were afforded the same opportunity.
