BREAKING: President Trump Declares Somalia a War Zone

Vladimir Putin orders Russian air force to prepare for ‘time of war’.

Russia’s air force has been ordered to prepare for a “time of war”.

President Vladimir Putin has ordered a “snap check” of the country’s armed forces, accoording to defense minister Sergey Shoigu. As well as checking whether agencies and troops are ready for battle, the same order will ensure that systems are ready to fight, according to state news agency TASS.

Those preparations have already begun, according to Russian ministers.

The preparations come amid increasing concern about tensions between Russia and many of the world’s largest superpowers. Donald Trump has both condemned Russia’s military campaigns and been criticised for being too close to the country’s leaders, and Russia itself is standing in an increasingly tense relationship with some Nato countries.

The country has been increasing movement of its military including the launch of the biggest Arctic military push since the fall of the Soviet Union, last month. It has also revealed plans to expand its military over 2017, including a huge boost in the number of tanks, armoured vehicles and aircraft controlled by the company.

The many tribulations of Nigerian journalists working in the shadow of Boko Haram – By Abang Mercy

“A 9-year-old boy, dressed for school, turns to say goodbye. Within the twinkle of an eye, a bullet from an AK47 rifle makes its way through his body. I watch him drop dead immediately. His crime? He wore a school uniform and was headed for school”.

Sixty-three-year-old veteran journalist Ahmed Juba immediately breaks down in tears as he tries to recall all that had happened that fateful day.

“That was when I knew this is war. I was headed to the office, running after a story, then I held back; I carried the lifeless body of Musa, a story was before me,” he said.

Journalists from the front lines, from the fringes of Madagali in Adamawa State to the trading communities of Potiskum in Yobe State and of course the renown tragic abductions in Chibok in Borno State, narrate the tales of surviving Boko Haram and fulfilling the resilience of a society that lost everything except its sense of hope.

According to a report by the third edition of the Global Terrorism Index, Boko Haram had overtaken ISIS as the world’s deadliest terrorist organisation, accounting for 6,600 deaths, displacing 2.3 million people and forcing 250,000 to flee to Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Invariably Journalists became the under-reported casualties of the tragic insurgence. Channels Television’s Akogwu Enenche and the NTA Cameraman Zakkariyya Isa killed in Borno are popular because of the traction their deaths elicited. However, there are more and more reporters whose tale of resilience is just emerging — tales that explain why the North East became a media black hole. .

The crisis affected the day-to-day activities of media organisations. Jamila Bako said male casters were asked to work in the evenings as the streets were mostly deserted and unsafe for female staff, who had regular encounters with the insurgents, being caught in between the volley of bullets from soldiers and insurgent.

“As a newscaster, I went on air tensed and in most cases, my voice battled with the sound of bomb explosions and gunshots while on air. We then moved our news bulletin from 7pm to 5pm, and the worst part was when our cameraman was killed. The insurgents called us to explain to us why he was killed; they had all our phone numbers.”

Jamila, a middle-career journalist, also narrated how her colleague was asked to visit the family of late Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf’s in-law to inquire the purpose of then President Olusegun Obasanjo’s visit — only for the interviewee to be killed.

“The reporter immediately fled; he was on the run, left Maiduguri to Bama and later moved to Cameroon for safety. That episode was terrifying, residents stopped talking to the press and especially NTA, because talking to the media was signing your own death sentence.”

The terrorists also wanted to be known by a particular name initially and the journalists were told what to do. An instance was when roving reporter, Mariam Aaron, said the insurgents were very upset that journalists called them Boko Haram instead of the name they wanted to be identified with at the start of the crisis: Jam?’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jih?d.

“I was repeatedly called to stop using the name Boko Haram if I wanted to stay alive with my family members,” Aaron, a television reporter said.

“They were very upset to be referred to as Boko Haram, a name they felt was given to them by the West. We were forced to stop calling them the names they hated.”

Amnesty International constantly issues reports about the detention of children and men at Giwa barracks in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, many of them arbitrarily rounded up during mass arrests — often with no evidence against them. Once inside the barracks, they are incarcerated without access to the outside world or trial. A news reporter’s accounts gives credence to what the Human rights agency documents.

Pressman Bello Gaidam was forced to flee Maiduguri to Adamawa and then Yobe after filing a story that ruffled the terrorists so badly he and his immediate family members were penned for death.

“All that needed to happen for us to be raided was for insurgents to attack anywhere on our street. The military will ensure they raided everyone’s home,” he said.

“Every male child was picked up and detained at the ‘notorious’ Giwa Barracks. Most of the kids were in JSS 1 and Jss 2, and they died of suffocation in the process.”

As he spoke, he struggled to hold back tears dredging up the harrowing experience in itself. “We had to contend with Boko Haram and the Nigerian military,” he said. “It was a tough call but we had to, we’ve also asked ourselves: who is the lesser evil?”

Reporting Boko Haram forced him to change his name, identity and looks “but somehow they still knew me, and told me to my face”.

And Maryam Sule, a known radio producer who presents one of the most popular programmes in the region, talks about the misrepresentation of the North East and journalists reporting the conflict..

“We are not talking about the protection of journalists; we are not debating the rights of one reporting conflict; we are saying we were in it, part of it and in it all, tried to perform the surveillance function. Mercy how do you do that? Tell me. We’ve heard people criticise Nigerian journalists from this region; some say we are doing nothing.

“Boko Haram will call me, instructing me on how to file my stories. There was a time I reported the victories of the Nigerian army in Boko Haram-controlled territories. I was immediately threatened to rewrite the story or get killed.”

She also spoke about the welfare of Nigerian journalists, especially those in the northeast region. “I have no insurance at my work place, I have no security protecting me like journalists who visit here. Most of the international journalists are accompanied with more than 10 security personnel. My family is here so at some point I had to listen to them and I was even ready to do what they wanted.”

Journalists in the northeast aren’t only reporting the crisis, they struggled to survive the conflict as well. The key actors, such as the military and the Boko Haram were not all there was to the story. Abdullahi Danlami sheds light about dealing with Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).

“The emergence of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) also had its implication. The youths wanted all young boys to take part in hunting for the terrorists; we had sleepless nights, we were reporting all that was ongoing and you get random young men knocking at some point threatening to break down your door to enroll your kids and take them to the bush to hunt for terrorists and when you fail to allow your 10-year-old to join, you’re in trouble.

“I must commend the CJTF but it was a nightmare knowing that your kids had to be turned into terrorist hunters. Those that came back alive were never the same. Most of them had to start smoking and drinking, and then you are faced with reporting the crisis when you are also the story. What do you do?”

Danlami added that he then had to sleep in his station for about six months or more and even in the station, there was no security. “I was waiting for the day the terrorists would come take over the station and force us to put them on air!”

These tales highlight some of the tragic and traumatic instances journalists faced while working to tell the multifaceted story of the Boko Haram insurgency.

‘Japan will never wage war again’ – PM Shinzo Abe

Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, joined U.S. President Barack Obama for a symbolic joint visit to Pearl Harbour on Tuesday, commemorating World War II dead and pledged that “Japan would never wage war again”.

The Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who monitored the event on news network, reports that Mr. Abe, while delivering a solemn speech offered ‘everlasting condolences’ to the U.S. and the entire world over victims of Pearl Harbour attack and the World War II.

NAN also reports that Mr. Obama pointed out that “there’s more to be won in peace than in war”.

Messrs. Abe and Obama commemorated the dead at the USS Arizona Memorial, built over the remains of the sunken battleship, according to Reuters.

Mr. Abe became the first Japanese prime minister to visit the memorial, a centrepiece of the historic site.

“We must never repeat the horrors of war again. This is the solemn vow we, the people of Japan, have taken.

“To the souls of the servicemen who lie in eternal rest aboard the USS Arizona, to the American people, and to all the peoples around the world, I pledge that unwavering vow here as the prime minister of Japan,” he said.

Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbour with torpedo planes, bombers and fighter planes on the morning of December 7, 1941, pounding the U.S. fleet moored there in the hope of destroying U.S. power in the Pacific.

Mr. Abe did not, however, apologise for the attack.

Obama, who earlier this year became the first incumbent U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, where the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb in 1945, called Mr. Abe’s visit a “historic gesture” that was “a reminder that even the deepest wounds of war can give way to friendship and a lasting peace”.

The two leaders stood solemnly in front of a wall inscribed with the names of those who died in the 1941 attack and they took part in a brief wreath-laying ceremony, followed by a moment of silence.

“In Remembrance, Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan” was written on one wreath and “In Remembrance, Barack Obama, President of the United States” on the other.

The visit, just weeks before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office, was meant to highlight the strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance in the face of a rising China and amid concerns that Trump would have a more complicated relationship with Tokyo.

World War II, which raged from 1939 to 1945, killed more than 60 million people.

The aftermath of the war led to the formation of the United Nations “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”, among others.

Pakistan, Russia Fighter Jets Set To Join War Against Boko Haram- NAF

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) will take delivery of war -planes and helicopters from Pakistan and Russia to boost its fleet ahead of the final push against Boko Haram insurgents, it was learnt yesterday.

Nigeria has failed to procure fighter jets from the United States and Brazil.

Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who broke the news in Abuja, said  Air Force personnel were undergoing training in many countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Egypt and China.

The news came as Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai ordered his men to end the insurgency this month.

Air Marshal Abubakar said: “We have been enjoying support from other countries. Sometimes arms procurement is shrouded in a lot of politics. Unfortunately, I’m not a politician, so I cannot say much on that. But what I can tell you is that right now we are expecting the Pakistani Chief of Air Staff in Nigeria soon. Pakistan has accepted to sell 10 trainer airplanes. And that is why the Pakistan Chief of Air Staff is coming for the induction ceremony in Kaduna.”

The Chief of Air Staff said the Air Force was assisting the Army and the Navy in the North and South fighting terrorism and militancy through operational strategy, air interdictions strategy and soft-core strategy.

He said the objective was to create an enabling environment for the ground and surface forces to operate with little or no hindrance.

He said the Service was carrying out massive reactivation of redundant aircraft and many of them are already involved in the fight against Boko Haram.

“Another sub -strategy is the reactivation of airplanes. We have embarked on the reactivation of airplanes and today we are on the 13th aircraft. What I mean by reactivation is that aircraft that were not involved in any fight before the coming of this Federal Government; they were parked before but are today part of the fight.

“The 13th aircraft as I speak to you is being worked upon in Yola and we are hoping that before the end of this month that airplane will be flying. When you train, you must reactivate the platform to be used in flying.”

He praised the competence of NAF pilots, saying:  “In the last 18 months, we have flown almost 3000 hours with no incident. The pilots are among the most competent. Because the training curriculum is very clear. And that is why now in the Air Force you look at the wings, pilots wear wings. We have categorised the wings according to their skill levels.

The Nigeria Data Pricing War – by Yemi Ade-John

The overriding principle should be that lower prices are good for the consumer and if their is underpricing or cartel price fixing there are methods for punishing that behavior all the while ensuring that costs of fines for example are not passed on to consumers.

All today’s big operators were once small operators and they did fine. Etisalat came in last and is doing fine and we haven’t heard that NITEL is complaining

How many operators make up a monopoly or oligopoly and how many more do we need to get this vaunted ‘perfect’ market?

Is the CDMA platform efficient or more beneficial, why is it being protected and who says they won’t engage in anticompetitive practices themselves just like the big GSM ones have E been doing presumably for years unchecked till now? So are we now being encouraged to migrate to CDMA operators with their limited geographical spread?

What heaven dictated business model did the regulator use to determine that under-pricing was taking place?

I have never heard of a regulator anywhere dictating prices to go upwards on its own initiative for over 80% of the consumer base in an industry;its normally the other way with the operators persuading a reluctant regulator on the need to be allowed to effect increases-in areal democratic society that this sort of regulatory behavior would result in heads rolling!

Anti-graft war is boosting foreign investors’ confidence – EFCC

The anti-graft agency in Nigeria says the fight against corruption by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has redeemed the image of Nigeria in the international community and has also encouraged foreign investments in the country.

The Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, made the assertion on Monday when he visited the headquarters of National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), in Kaduna State.

Speaking to reporters during the visit, the EFCC boss, stressed the determination of the Federal Government to rid the country of corrupt practices.

Mr Magu urged all Nigerians to support the anti-graft war in order to create a conducive environment for foreign investors to come in.

On his part, the General Secretary of the NUTGTWN, Mr Issa Aremu, emphasised the need for the government to come up with a national strategic policy that would give a strong backing in combating corruption at all levels.

He says the collapse of many industries in Nigeria was due to corruption and calls for total support to the fight against corruption.

The comment of the EFCC’ boss came on the same day the former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr Reuben Abati, was taken into custody by the anti-graft agency.

He was spotted at the EFCC premises at about 5:30PM on Monday.

Abati’s detention may not be unconnected to the anti-corruption campaign of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration which has intensified with a clampdown on some public officials from the previous administration.

He has not been named in any of the ongoing corruption cases.

BREAKING: War? Russia ‘orders all officials to fly home any relatives living abroad’.

Russia is ordering all of its officials to fly home any relatives living abroad amid heightened tensions over the prospect of global war, it has been claimed.

Politicians and high-ranking figures are said to have received a warning from president Vladimir Putin to bring their loved-ones home to the ‘Motherland’, according to local media.

It comes after Putin cancelled a planned visit to France amid a furious row over Moscow’s role in the Syrian conflict and just days after it emerged the Kremlin had moved nuclear-capable missiles near to the Polish border.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has also warned that the world is at a ‘dangerous point’ due to rising tensions between Russia and the US.

UNICEF: 50 Million Children Uprooted by Crises

War and poverty have forced 50 million children around the world from their homes, according to UNICEF.

Up to 28 million of the children have been uprooted by violent conflict, with nearly as many abandoning their homes in search of a better life, says a report released by the UN agency.

The report, entitled Uprooted: The Growing Crisis for Refugee and Migrant Children, also says that the number of child refugees has more than doubled in the past 10 years from four million to 8.2 million.

UNICEF describes the children as some of the most vulnerable people on earth and gives warning that if governments do not act, the numbers are likely to grow.

Whether it is from war, violence, poverty or climate change, the youngsters have been uprooted by crises they are not responsible for, or have little influence over, says UNICEF.

The report, published on Tuesday, says that children make up about a third of the world’s population as of 2015 and accounted for nearly half of all refugees.

Speaking in Geneva, Ted Chaiban, UNICEF director of programmes, said: “What’s important is that these children on the move are children. And they should be treated as children.

“They deserve to be protected. They need access to services, such as education.”

According to the report, there were 10 million child refugees and one million child asylum seekers whose status had not yet been determined.

The remaining 17 million children displaced by conflict remained within their home countries’ borders.

The report said 45 percent of the children refugees came from just two countries, Syria and Afghanistan.

Increasingly, these children are travelling alone, with 100,000 unaccompanied minors applying for asylum in 78 countries in 2015, three times the number in 2014, the report found.

Because these children often lack documents, they are especially vulnerable.

The report estimates another 20 million children are migrants, driven from their homes by poverty and gang violence among other things.

Refugee and migrant children face a host of risks including drowning during sea crossings, malnourishment, dehydration, kidnapping, rape and murder.

When they arrive in other countries they often face discrimination and xenophobia, the report stated.

“The world hears the stories of child refugees one child at a time and the world is able to bring support to that child, but when we talk about millions it provokes incredible outrage and underscores the need to address the growing problem,” said Emily Garin, the UNICEF report’s author.

The report calls on the international community to provide protection, education and health services to these children and asks governments to address the root causes contributing to the large-scale movements of refugees and migrants.

Over 5,000 CSOs Support Buhari On War Against Insurgency

Coalition Against Terrorism and Extremism, CATE, a coalition of over 5000 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Tuesday in Abuja held a rally in appreciation of the success made by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the current military leadership in the war against Boko Haram insurgents.

Addressing journalists during the rally which kicked off at the Federal Secretariat and ended at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Secretary General of the Coalitions, Comrade Daniel Obaje, said since the government of President Buhari came into office, significant progress had been made in addressing the security breaches that had threatened the integrity of Nigeria.

He said areas where Boko Haram once set up camps had been cleared, adding that some displaced persons were already beginning to return to their homeland.

He said: “The Army freed over 5000 persons that the terrorists once held captive even as efforts are being intensified to free those that are yet to regain freedom.

Remnants of the terrorists are risking death to flee across the desert into the Mediterranean. The group in its defeat can only now think of hit and run attacks by drug addled fighters who now increasingly opt to fail in their assignment so that the military can capture them for rehabilitation.

“The recent weeks have seen the higher echelon of Boko Haram decimated with several commanders killed in troops’ operations. Others have been captured, which has left the group being fragmented with split in its leadership. Everything points to a group that has been finished.

We therefore want to urge Mr. President not to relent in continuing with measures that will ensure Boko Haram terrorists are not allowed to regroup anywhere on our territory ever again. In fact, we urge that Nigeria does all that is necessary to make sure these killers do not regroup in Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic, all of which share borders with us.”

Responding on behalf of the SGF, Ibrahim Bapetel Hasan, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Buhari on Policy Development Analysis said the report would be passed to the president.

Millions Of Illegal Weapons Smuggled Into Nigeria – UN

The UN says it estimates there are more than 350 million illegal light weapons in Nigeria.

The UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa said this accounted for 70% of illicit small arms in West Africa.

Some of the weapons are said to have originated in Mali and Libya, where there are ongoing conflicts.  The UN said the presence of so many illegal arms in the country threatened its existence.

At the moment the country is affected by three separate conflicts – an Islamist insurgency in the north-east, militancy in the oil-rich Niger Delta, and clashes between nomads and farmers.

We’ll Reduce Boko Haram To Nothing Despite Leadership Change – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said that the military was not in the least bit perturbed about the latest change of leadership in Boko Haram.

Wednesday, the BBC reported that Islamic State had named a new leader, Abu Musab al-Barnawi, for Boko Haram. Al-Barnawi, who was once the spokesman for the insurgent group, has replaced Abubakar Shekau. According to BBC, al-Barnawi was featured in the latest issue of an ISIS magazine. The magazine made no reference to Shekau. But DHQ spokesman, Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, said wednesday that the military was not interested in what happens in what he described as “nearly dead” Boko Haram terrorists, including a change of leadership or alliance with ISIS.

Abubakar said that the military was singularly focused on the complete destruction of the terror group, irrespective of leadership and administrative changes. He said: “The leadership change in Boko Haram, as purportedly stated, does not in any way bother us, as the group is nearly dead in Nigeria and other countries within the Lake Chad Basin. “So whether there is a change in leadership or not, we are sure of total annihilation of the group. “Our focus is to clear them from their hideouts which we have been doing through the ongoing Operation Crackdown and Operation Gama Aiki with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

It’s (leadership change) not anything to us and we will continue to reduce them to nothing.

Abubakar said the military has been capturing members of the terror sect on “a daily basis, so the change is not anything to us”. He said the military was certain that Boko Haram was “in disarray and collapsing”. “So they are trying to behave like a dying person who will hold on to any thing in his desperation to stay alive. People should not take them seriously, as they no longer pose a threat. We dismiss this change of leadership as child’s play,” he added.

Shekau was last seen in a Boko Haram propaganda video in March 2015, one of many footages released in his years of leading a brutal campaign against Nigeria. In one of the videos, Shekau pledged allegiance to ISIS, which was originally based in Syria and Iraq. ISIS has several offshoots now in other countries, including Libya. Al-Barnawi, who has been named as Boko Haram’s new leader, is something of a mystery. When he appeared in a Boko Haram video in January 2015 as the group’s spokesman, he wore a turban and his face was blurred out and it was filmed as a sit-down studio interview.

Unlike former leader, Shekau, his delivery in the Hausa language was considered and softly spoken.
Shekau was often filmed in the open, surrounded by fighters, loudly proclaiming his threats, victories and giving rambling ideological lectures. However, al-Barnawi pulled no punches, warning that towns which resisted Boko Haram in its mission to create an Islamic state would be flattened.

He also spoke of being against democracy and foreign education. In his most recent magazine interview, he again objected to the name Boko Haram, by which local people call the group, as it means “Western education is forbidden” in Hausa. He maintained ISIS was still strong in the region and promised to continue fighting West African governments.

But as the identity of the head of Boko Haram was revealed, the Nigerian Army said yesterday that its troops with the assistance of civilian vigilantes, on routine checks, identified and arrested a high profile member of the sect. Army spokesman, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said in statement: “On Tuesday, 2nd August 2016, at about 8.30 a.m., troops of Operation Lafiya Dole with the assistance of vigilantes, on routine checks, identified and arrested a high profile suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Mohammed Mohammed Zauro, at Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State.

Preliminary investigation shows that the suspected terrorist kingpin was arrested as he was trying to flee to Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, from Sambisa forest. “The troops recovered a Gionee brand of mobile phone handset and a fake SAIE/JIBWIS identification card to perfect his escape and the sum of N7,900.” Usman said the troops also intercepted another suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Lawal Aboi, along Damboa-Bale Road.

According to him, he was on his way to voluntarily surrender to the troops in Damboa because he was tired of fighting for no just cause. Both suspects are being further interrogated,” the army spokesman said.

5000 OPC Members Armed For War Against Ijaw Militants

5000 members of the Reformed Oodua People’s Congress (ROPC) have converged in Ogun state to confront militants who have been causing havoc in the Arepo and Imushin communities.

Punch reports that the members of the group arrived the state in 100 buses, looking ready for battle.

Eyewitnesses say the OPC members, who came from Lagos and other parts of Ogun, carried all manner of charms and weapons.

A source who spoke to newsmen also said They were over 5,000 and they filled the whole community. They carried all kinds of charms and a few of them even carried placards, protesting militant’s invasion of the South-West.

“They said they were ready to enter into the creeks to face the militants and kill them and all they needed was the permission of the traditional ruler. Some of them said they could transform to snakes and lions, once they get into the creeks.

“The traditional ruler, after thanking them for their concern, asked them to leave because he had not received authority from higher authorities to allow them fight the militants. He urged them to get approval from the government before doing anything in the community.

The President of the group, Dare Adesope, also said “On July 19, we issued a 14-day ultimatum to the militants to end their activities in the South-West and we said if they didn’t leave, we will challenge them and defend our people. That ultimatum elapsed yesterday (Monday).

The recent military action against the militants might have been influenced by our ultimatum, because prior to the release, the Federal Government didn’t do anything.

“We decided to go to the community in 107 buses and some cars, to show that the Reformed OPC is still on the ground and our aim is to protect the lives and property of everyone that is residing within our area of jurisdiction.

“Our silence all this while is not an act of cowardice. It is because we believe in dialogue before action. It is wrong for anyone to be kidnapping, raping, robbing and killing our people.

“We say no to that and we don’t want anything like that again in Yoruba land. After today, if we hear anything again in the area, we know what to do.

A combined team of security forces bombarded the hideouts of the militants in the creeks of Arepo in Ogun state.

‘You Want War? You’ve Got It!’ US Deploys Supersonic Bomber Days After North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-un Declared War On America

US President Barack Obama has acted on Noth Korea’s Supreme leader Kim Jong-Un’s bluff by deploying very powerful supersonic bombers to bases near North Korea – just days after the dictator Kim Jong-un declared war on America.

The North Korean leader accused Mr Obama of “crossing the red line” after introducing trade sanctions last week, and promised the “toughest countermeasures” in response. Obama in uncharacteristic fashion has deployed supersonic strike bombers to bases near North Korea – daring Kim Jong-Un to attack first.

Around 300 US airmen have also been deployed alongside the B-1B Lancer bombers to Guam, a US territory in the Pacific Ocean within striking range of the North Korea’s capital of Pyongyang.
A spokesman for the US Airforce said: “The B-1 units bring a unique perspective and years of repeated combat and operational experience from the Central Command theatre to the Pacific.
“They will provide a significant rapid global strike capability that enables our readiness and commitment to deterrence, offers assurance to our allies, and strengthens regional security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

Along with declaring war on the US, North Korea also recently threatened to reduce Japan “to debris in a moment”.
Most bizarrely, however, has been the dictator’s order for border guards to kill snakes – amid ‘fears’ the snakes are spies working for his enemies.
A source from within Pyongyang revealed: “From early this month, border patrol units received orders to capture snakes before they crawl over the banks of Amnok River.
“The key message from the Party was that the South’s National Intelligence Service had released snakes as part of a ‘cunning scheme’ to challenge our unity.
“Under orders to capture the snakes before they reach land and hatch eggs, soldiers have no choice but to wade into the river to do so, naturally leading to complaints.
“Some grumble among themselves about the nature of the state’s claims, justifiably pointing out that not even a three-year-old would believe that the South would attack us with snakes over propaganda leaflets or CDs.”

Kaduna Indigenes Declare War Against Religious Extremism

Kaduna indigenes under the aegis of Kaduna State Citizens for Peace (KSCP), Tuesday, held a mass rally in the state metropolis, condemning religious extremism in the country.

This came as constitutional lawyer, Mr Femi Falana had last week, written the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to arraign military personnel involved in the clash with Shi’ites, last year.

According to them, any attempt to persecute Nigerian soldiers when the same Shi’ite members are still roaming the streets is to confirm insinuations in some quarters that the Islamic Movement of Nigeria has succeeded in instituting a government in Nigeria.

In a statement by its National President, Richard Augustine, the KSCP said the activities of the Shi’ites members in the state has not been friendly adding that very soon, their “Armies” might freely carry out actions on Nigerians unhindered. According to Augustine, the Shi’ite group embarked on a protest to the state government House but security operatives succeeded in blocking them along the Kashim Ibrahim House an indication that they are building up again, accusing outsiders of empowering them.

“In fact security operatives are stopping them from going to the government house for a protest but the leaders are discussing with a detachment of both Police and Civil Defence Operatives along the Kashim Ibrahim house,” the group said. He said the sufferings of previous religious crises are still being borne by the citizens of Kaduna, adding,

“We still suffer today even several years after fanatics destroyed our state. Whenever Kaduna is about to recover, they will again spill blood. Each time the population starts uniting, they will find division. Whenever we want to return to living as one, they find problems for us. We have to end this and that is what must happen”. Augustine noted with emphasis that it was planned that the Shi’ite problem in Zaria comes to other parts of Kaduna state.

Drone Strike Kills Six Suspected Militants In Central Yemen

A drone strike killed six suspected al Qaeda militants in an overnight attack in eastern Yemen, tribal sources said on Thursday.

The apparent U.S. drone strike targeted a car traveling in al Rawda city in Shabwa province, a remote desert area where al Qaeda militants are believed to be operating. The province has been targeted by drone strikes this year.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has taken advantage of a conflict pitting Houthi militiamen against forces loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to grab territory and operate more openly.

Dozens of al Qaeda militants reclaimed the town of Azzan in Yemen’s Shabwa province on Monday, residents said, exploiting a security vacuum.

The United States has kept up a drone campaign against the militants, adding to near-daily air strikes by a Saudi-led Gulf Arab coalition, which intervened in the war last March to rout the Iran-backed Houthis and restore Hadi’s government.

Suspected U.S. drone strikes, which normally use Hellfire missiles, have killed some of AQAP’s top leaders, including its chief Nasser al-Wuhayshi last June.

Ex-militants Threaten War Over Alleged Amnesty Budget Slash

Niger Delta ex-agitators, under the aegis of Presidential Amnesty Phase II, on Monday threatened war over the Federal Government’s alleged plan to slash the 2016 budget for the Presidential Amnesty Office.

They argued that the proposed N20bn for the initiative was unacceptable to them.

The ex-militants comprises those in the 6166 Presidential Amnesty Phase II, 3142 and 20192 Ex-militants Phase III and Phase I.

While the protesters said the amount could not cater for their monthly stipends, they urged the Federal Government to respect the Memorandum of Understanding it signed with them.

The ex-militants in a peaceful protest around major streets of Warri, Delta State, on Monday carried placards with inscriptions such as “Senate President, beg President to leave the amnesty budget alone;” “We say no to the plan to reduce the amnesty budget;” “Buhari, please don’t force us to go back to the creeks;” “Saraki, leave our budget alone;” “Ex-militants reject the 2016 amnesty budget;” and the amnesty budget should increase and not reduce.”

Turkey Will ‘More Than Once’ Regret Shooting Down Russian Plane – Putin

Delivering his annual state of the nation address today, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia will not ignore what he described as Turkey’s “aiding of terrorists”, adding that the November shooting down of the Sukhoi Su-24 plane was a “treacherous war crime”.
He said Turkey will ‘more than once’ regret shooting down the Russian jet near the Syrian-Turkey border.

Putin also called for a broad international front against terrorism, an end to what he called double standards and halting any backing of what he called “terror groups”.
Russia have already banned importation of fruits  and vegetables from Turkey and already deported several Turkish business men.

“We are not planning to engage in military sabre-rattling [with Turkey],” Putin said. “If somebody thought that after committing a treacherous war crime — the killing of our people — it would be possible to get away with mere restrictions on the trade of tomatoes, or some other restrictions … then they are grossly mistaken,” Putin said.
“We shall remind them many times about what they’ve done, and they will regret what they’ve done for a long time,” he said. “We know what needs to be done.”
It appears that Allah decided to punish the ruling clique of Turkey by depriving them of wisdom and judgment,” Putin said.
He criticised Turkey, accusing it of buying oil from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

“We are fighting for justice, happiness and the entire future of our civilisation. We have to be prepared and we have to defeat them [terrorists] before they get here that’s why we launched this operation in Syria.”

ISIS Threatens To Attack New York City In New Video Showing Suicide Bombers Walking Into Times Square

ISIS has threatened to bomb New York City in a newly released video, just days after vowing to attack Washington, D.C. The video clip features shots of yellow taxis and crowds in Times Square and Herald Square in Manhattan, with vibrant French music playing in the background – a nod to the Paris terror attacks on Friday.

It then cuts to a man wrapping a bomb around his waist before walking into the crowds and pulling the trigger.
New York police have issued a statement to say they are aware of the footage. They added that there is no direct threat to the city but insist there is a ‘heightened state of vigilance’.

‘In addition, we are continuing to deploy additional Critical Response Command (CRC) teams throughout the City, out of an abundance of caution,’ Stephen Davis, a Deputy NYPD Commissioner, said in a statement on Wednesday.

He added: ‘While some of the video footage is not new, the video reaffirms the message that New York City remains a top terrorist target.’

The video, which runs for nearly six minutes, includes a scene that appears to show a suicide bomber making preparations and zipping up a leather jacket.
The clip shows a brief glimpse of Times Square and then of a suicide bomber holding what appears to be a trigger, it said.

Honduras Detains Five Syrians Headed To U.S. With Stolen Greek Passports

Honduran authorities have detained five Syrian nationals who were trying to reach the United States using stolen Greek passports, but there are no signs of any links to last week’s attacks in Paris, police said.

The Syrian men were held late on Tuesday in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, on arrival from Costa Rica, and had been planning to head to the border with neighboring Guatemala. The passports had been doctored to replace the photographs with those of the Syrians, police said.

“We received information from (fellow) police services that these five Syrians left Greece and passed through Turkey, Brazil, Argentina and San Jose in Costa Rica before finally reaching Tegucigalpa,” said Anibal Baca, spokesman for Honduras’ police. “They are normal Syrians.”

Group Declares War On ISIS In Warning Video (WATCH)

After the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for Friday’s wave of attacks that killed 129 people in Paris, the hactivist collective Anonymous declared war on the terrorist faction and its supporters.

“Make no mistake: Anonymous is at war with Daesh,” the enigmatic hacker group wrote on Twitter over the weekend, using an alternative name for ISIS.

The group uploaded videos in multiple languages, including English and Italian, in which it vowed to “neutralize” the perpetrators of Friday’s attacks.

“We will not give up, we do not forgive,” said a person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask. “Expect us.”

#Pausibility: It Is So Easy To Start A War by Adebayo Coker

Biafra-protest-b-2

Long before now, I have been carrying the inclination that I am going to write this piece but now I have the conviction of time to do it expressly. This is not an indictment on any religion or a section of the country. In fact, it is a pointer to all of us— globally—that everything is about to go down, if nothing is done in the quickest time possible.

I used to patronize one Brother Adamu. He was introduced into the compound by my landlord. He does some chores for us in the compound but for me I only allow him clean my jalopy. Many times I had to settle him even beyond what a typical industrial car wash would charge and sometimes I defray the bill of his primary principal when I see him lurking around for too long, calling out when he’s done cleaning Alhaji’s cars in order to be settled. This guy deserves that daily pittance however you view it, especially when he works to earn it; I thought each time I saw him hanging there. Adamu is an industrious young man. He had sold me his shoe shining business though I never patronized him but I appreciate the adroit with which he carries the small case beating it to call the attention of any possible client. Adamu is striving, even when he tells you Ba Turenci ,  he puts his best to understanding whatever instruction you pass to him and he will deliver optimally.

Along the line I had a serious disagreement with Alhaji (on principle) that I was prepared to enforce my right in the Court of Law but somehow due to interventions here and there, we were able to reach a compromise. Then I called Adamu to come over to help get the car prepared as usual. Adamu jumped at it, rushed down to my compound, took all the needful from the muster point and got prepared to wash the car: then he was summoned by Alhaja, the wife of the landlord. Adamu was gone longer than normal and when he returned he just stood right there; he couldn’t utter a word, neither did he go back to the bucketful of soapy water to get done with what I invited him for. He just stood there and I got the message. I pressed: you wan wash or not? Adamu couldn’t respond. After a while he just walked out on me and I smiled. I took care of the car myself, in the first place I have always done the chore myself but I have to patronize Adamu for his own sustenance. After I finished washing the car and I realized that Adamu was still in the compound, I walked to where he was standing with Alhaja whom I suspected deliberately kept him company for the period I was washing the car, so he may not return to me. I offered half of what I had planned to give him if he had done the washing. Not that I had so much fund to play with, but I know Adamu needs help. His mind was just being exploited. Even though he may not have liked it, he couldn’t resist. It is possible he may have been told I am a Kaferi. The next morning I saw Adamu grumbling and when I asked what the problem is, he managed to explain to me that Alhaji hasn’t paid him for a very long time now. I pitied the young man who could have earned his full pay yesterday and possibly got a top-up, and also retain this customer. I could only wish him well and I drove off.

My mind went to those cheap recruits lurking around at the foot of the streets; young minds and energies that are left uncharted or underexplored. That’s why someone would see life as undeserving of them and would leave his or her supposed good life wherever in the world to join agents of destruction: ISIL, Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabbab, Boko Haram, etc.

The ongoing agitation by some youths in the South-East with a tag of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) calling for secession, threatening war and spotting some people as the enemies of their realization, led by one Mr Kanu who had been legally arrested at his arrival on the soil of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, precisely at the airport but, (truth be told) unconstitutionally kept in detention till now. Mr Kanu is a young man himself who had been exposed to sound education and quality life. He instigates untold hate from his base in the UK through one of his machinery of doom, RadioBiafra and he had doubled his effrontery to fly into the land he so much professed hate for and expected to be treated like a royal. At that point he can be taken to be a spy and rightly to be treated as one. The devil doesn’t get a fair trial when he touches God’s anointed.

I didn’t witness the Civil War just as so many of us but we have heard stories and follow histories; most recently, There Was A Country by Chinua Achebe. In some quarters Achebe was said to be fragmentally segmented in his depiction of the events in his piece but whatever he captured were actions I wouldn’t want to experience so I wonder if Mr Kanu truly loves the people he was trying to take with him to his ‘republic’.

The street protests I see have no elderly person joining the march, even though some of us may want to believe the ‘supporting’ elders are only taking the back seat for now and would come out to reap the usefulness of the roundtable after these young men and women have been used to test the venom of whatever clampdown may be necessary in dealing with such unruliness; I still wonder at the raw energies of these unchecked herd-followers.

A reasonable Nnamdi would not see a reason to burn down his own store even if he will agitate for a better space; he won’t stop taking customers to his small shed till he is able to turn it into a chain of stores, then work on becoming a hybrid of importer and exporter group of companies. Look everywhere, you will see my Biafran brothers and sisters doing well. They usually pursue their businesses peacefully so we need to start asking why the majority of them would allow the few fallow-minded ones amongst them to put all of them in a bad light. Despite many expositions that this Kanu guy is a fraud, many young men and women offer themselves as pliable tools for his acts of self-perpetuation disguised as a clarion call for a Biafran dream and actualization. Let no clannish Kanu mess you up.

No doubt the current political hegemony may be lopsided, but don’t be another foolish sect sporting for war when you can get things done within the purview of simple human reasoning. Don’t die for what you can’t even explain if you were asked at the gate of hell: what killed you?

No Victor No Vanquished is a bad memory.

Buhari, Fayose In Verbal War Over Nigerian Economy

President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state are in a war of words over the state of Nigeria’s economy.

The Ekiti Governor was the first to fire the salvo when he accused Mr. Buhari’s administration of paying out the lowest-ever federally distributed allocations among the three tiers of the government.

The Nigerian government had shared a little over N389 billion for the month of October to the three tiers of government.

Mr. Fayose reacted to the low figure while speaking at the graduation ceremony of College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, in which he asked Mr. Buhari to come clean to Nigerians on the state of the economy.

Mr. Buhari reacted angrily to Mr. Fayose’s insinuations by warning the governor to stop making unsubstantiated allegations about the nation’s economy.

Mr. Buhari, who spoke through his media aide, Garba Shehu, said Mr. Fayose’s comments were reckless, adding that “the governor didn’t get his facts correct”.

Mr. Shehu also faulted Mr. Fayose’s claims that the N389 billion shared for the month October was the lowest ever in the history of the country, saying the lowest ever allocation to the three ties was issued by the Peoples Democratic Party government of Goodluck Jonathan.

We Can Win War Against Boko Haram- Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday said Nigeria can win the war against Boko Haram, stressing that the military was already having upper hand in the security measures taken so far.

Obasanjo spoke with State House Correspondents after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on the mission of his delegation to Colombia to study its 50-year experience in the fight against rebels.

The former president, who led a delegation of a foundation headed by him to the Presidential Villa, explained that Columbia’s experience was important because the experience of the long period Columbia government has been fighting rebels would assist in tackling the present security challenge in the country.

According to him, the foundation produced a book from its findings, which prompted him to bring members of the foundation to meet with President Buhari to discuss their experiences, which could assist in defeating the Boko Haram.

He noted that the ultimatum given by Buhari to the military to end Boko Haram insurgency in three months was realistic, saying if the nation could win the civil war, it was possible to defeat Boko Haram.

We Are Ready For War- North Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered his frontline troops to be ready for war, against a backdrop of rising military tensions between his country and South Korea.

The announcement follows an exchange of artillery shells across the two countries’ heavily fortified border.

The Demilitarised Zone is a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war.

The North’s official KCNA news agency said the move came during an emergency meeting late on Thursday of the powerful Central Military Commission of which Kim is the chairman.

During the meeting, Kim ordered frontline, combined units of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) to “enter a wartime state” from Friday 5pm local time (08:00 GMT).

The troops should be “fully battle ready to launch surprise operations” while the entire frontline should be placed in a “semi-war state,” KCNA quoted him as saying.

Battle On Terrorism – UK Sends Arms To Iraqi Government To Tackle ISIS

Heavy machine guns and ammunition are being donated to Iraq to help fight Islamic State militants, the Ministry of Defence says.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said the equipment was worth about £1.6m, and there would be an estimated £475,000 in transport costs.

He said the UK is committed to assisting the Iraqi government and to help Kurdish forces defend themselves.

The equipment is due to arrive in Iraq on Wednesday.

Iraq_ISIS_Abu_Wahe_2941936b

The “gifting” of the equipment is being sent at the request of the Iraqi government, including the Kurdish regional government, Mr Fallon added.

The news comes after Iraq created a new government, sharing posts between the Shia Arab majority, Sunni Arabs and Kurds.

The Islamic State jihadist group has taken control of large swathes of Iraq and Syria and in June declared the creation of a “caliphate”, or Islamic state.

Mr. Fallon said the UK wanted to offer help to the Iraqi authorities by “alleviating the humanitarian suffering” of those Iraqis targeted by IS.

He also said Britain wanted to promote “an inclusive, sovereign and democratic Iraq” that can push back on IS advances and restore stability and security across the country, while working with the international community to tackle the broader threat it poses to the region and countries around the world, including the UK.

He added: “The Kurdish forces remain significantly less well equipped” than IS and the UK was responding to help them.

He said IS was “guilty of shocking brutality”.

“I am pleased that we will supply weapons to the Kurdish forces who are at the front line of combating their violent extremism.”
