FG Declares Tuesday, Wednesday As Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared July 5 and 6, 2016, as public holiday to mark the Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.

The Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, on Thursday in Abuja, urged all Muslim faithful and Nigerians in general “to extend the spiritual benefits of Ramadan, which are love, peace and justice to their daily living and through these, contribute to the development of the nation.”

A statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Bassey Akpanyung, said Dambazau also urged Nigerians to use the opportunity of “this spiritual rejuvenation to reflect on the imperative of unity and peaceful co-existence in strengthening the bond of togetherness for a strong and virile nation.”

The minister, while wishing Nigerians a peaceful celebration, urged total support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s avowed determination to bequeath to the nation an enduring political legacy.

Buhari To Present 2016 Budget On Tuesday

President Muhammadu Buhari will tomorrow, Tuesday December 22, present the 2016 national budget before a joint session of the National Assembly.

This was disclosed to state house correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting which held on Monday in the council chambers of the Presidential Villa, designed to fine-tune the document.

The 6.07 trillion Naira budget proposal for 2016 was predicated on $38 per barrel oil benchmark; 197 Naira exchange rate.

It is an increase of about 40 per cent from the previous budget of 4.357 trillion Naira which was presented to the National Assembly in 2014 by ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

The budget presentation by President Buhari is coming just as the National Assembly approved the Medium Term Framework Expenditure (MTEF).

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had on December 7 approved the Medium Term Expenditure Framework which pegs the 2016 Budget at six trillion Naira.

Senate Gets 11 More Ministerial Nominees Tuesday

A fresh batch of ministerial nominees will hit the Senate on Tuesday, October 6, the day chamber is expected to resume in plenary after the independence anniversary recess.

 National Assembly source which made the disclosure also said the president does not intend to have 42 ministers. President Muhammadu Buhari had forwarded a list of 25 ministerial nominees to Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki on Wednesday evening through his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari who was accompanied by Senator Ita Enang, Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on National Assembly Matters. The list was submitted to Saraki in a sealed brown envelope at exactly 4:59pm, hours after plenary was adjourned for the week.

Initial reports indicated that a list of 41 ministerial nominees was drafted initially but was later pruned to 25, making the first batch. Saraki’s spokesman, Yusuph Olaniyonu disclosed that, “following the tradition of the Senate, the Senate President decided that the envelope will remain sealed till Tuesday October 6, when, during the plenary sitting of the Upper legislative chamber, it will be opened and the list read to Senators.”

APC Caucus Meets On Tuesday

The national caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to meet on Tuesday to resolve the crisis rocking the party over the selection of principal officers in the National Assembly.

Tuesday’s meeting, which will hold at the party’s secretariat in Abuja, is expected to serve as a prelude to a more expansive meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) later in the week.

The meeting would review the crisis that has engulfed the party’s members in the National Assembly as well as the actions taken by the party so far to address it.

The meeting, which scheduled to start at 11a.m. will be attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, his Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Dr. Saraki , House Speaker, Dogara and leaders of the party.

There are speculations that some members may ask the Chairman of the party, John Oyegun to step down for his perceived failure to nip in the bud the National Assembly crisis that has shaken the party so much.

Buhari Inaugurates 8th Assembly On Tuesday

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to inaugurate the 8th National Assembly on Tuesday, June 9. Buhari has already written the Clerk of the National Assembly, Salihu Maikasuwa of his plans.

The President directed Maikasuwa to convene the new session on the said date. Principal officers of the National Assembly are expected to elected after the inauguration.
