Suicide Attacks: NSCDC Trains 50 Civilians On Intelligence Gathering, Surveillance In Borno

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Borno Command, on Monday said it had started training 50 civilians on surveillance and intelligence gathering to curtail terrorism in the state.

Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, NSCDC commander in the state, stated this during the graduation of participants of the training organised by the Crime Prevention Campaign of Nigeria (CPCN) in Maiduguri.
Abdullahi said that the participants were trained to provide surveillance at motor parks, shopping malls, market places, drinking spots, gambling centres and ghetto areas in the state capital.
He said that the training was part of measures to avert occurrences of suicide bomb attacks on the town by the Boko Haram insurgents.
“The training is timely, especially with the re-emergence of suicide bombers in their desperate attempt to cause havoc and instill fear in the minds of the people of the state.
“It is no longer news that terrorism and the strangulating insurgency have done a great harm in the country, especially the North Eastern region.
“All hands must be on deck to see that these bad elements do not resurface again,” said Abdullahi.
Also speaking, Brig.-Gen. Jubril Muhammad, the Garrison Commander of 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, commended the NSCDC for the initiative.
According to him, the initiative will go a long way in curtailing terrorist activities.
Muhammad, therefore, charged the participants to always verify their information before passing it across to the relevant security agencies for necessary actions.

GE Confirms ‘Keen Interest’ in $2 billion Nigeria Railway Concession

General Electric (GE) confirmed its a “keen interest” in acquiring a Nigeria railway concession project worth around $2 billion, the U.S. company said on Monday.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said this month that GE would be investing $2.2 billion in a concession to revamp, provide rolling stock, and manage some of the country’s railways.

“Given the size and scope of the proposed project, it is likely that the debt and equity commitments required from lenders, consortium partners and other co-developers will be in the range of $2 billion or more,” GE said in a statement mailed to Reuters.

It said the concession was in the formal procurement process.

Nigeria has been looking for partners to overhaul its aging railway system, which was mainly built by British colonial rulers before the country’s independence in 1960.

The West African nation has also signed two deals worth around $5 billion with China Civil Engineering Construction Corp (CCECC), part of China’s state-owned railway construction firm, to modernize and build railways in the north and south of the country, the Nigerian transport ministry said last month.

Growth in Nigeria – an OPEC member whose economy has slipped into recession for the first time in more than 20 years after being hammered by low oil prices – has been stunted for decades by a lack of investment in roads and railways.

GE said the railway concession project came on top of around $150 million the firm was currently spending on capital expenditures in Nigeria as cited by a senior company executive last week.

Pakistan Trains Women In Motorcycling For Mobility

Women in Pakistan are getting on their bikes in a bid overcome the barriers that limit their mobility and ultimately widen economic and gender inequalities.

Under Women on Wheels, a government-supported project, 35 women who had been trained to ride motorcycles participated in a rally on Tuesday in the city of Sargodha, in Punjab province.

Launched in January this year, the initiative encourages women to become independent, and reduce their reliance on male relatives for day-to-day activities, as well as getting to school, college or work.

Tuesday’s event was attended by Ingrid Johansson, the Swedish ambassador, representatives from UN Women Pakistan, local police and provincial officials.

The rally resulted in a rare sight. It is something of a taboo for women to ride motorcycles in Pakistan, a common form of transport for men, in cities and the countryside.

As dozens of women raced through the district in the Punjab on their motorcycles, their message was clear: We will be independent.

Borno Trains 1,000 IDPs On Self Defence Against Rape

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), said on Friday it had commenced the training of about 1, 000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) on self defence against rape and other acts of violence.

The Chairman of the agency, Mr Satomi Ahmed, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

Ahmed said that the training was to equip the IDPs who would soon be transported back to their various communities, to defend themselves in case of any attack.

“After the training, the beneficiaries would serve as ambassadors of the fight against domestic violence and sexual abuse in their various communities.”

He explained that the training is being conducted in collaboration with Action Against Hunger, International Rescue Commission and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The chairman added that the training also focussed on safe motherhood, reproductive health, sexual violence among others.

“At the end of the training, the women would be equipped with the relevant skills on how they can protect themselves against any accidental circumstances.

“The training will give the women the opportunity to assist other women on complications that may arise especially during child birth.

” This sensitisation is also designed to further build confidence in them to enable them return back to their homes without any fear,” Ahmed said.

US Trains Nigerian Military Officers On Counter-terrorism

A team of military personnel from the United States of America has arrived Nigeria to train a battalion of Nigerian Army officers and soldiers on counter-terrorism and insurgency operations.

Speaking at the commencement of the training at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State on Wednesday, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Enwistle, stressed the need for countries within the Lake Chad Basin to continue to work together in the fight against terrorism and insurgency within the region.

He stated that with the ongoing partnership between United States and Nigerian military in the areas of training of officers and soldiers, the war against the Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast was already yielding tremendous result as the insurgents had been largely defeated.

The US Ambassador also tasked the Nigerian government on improving the socio-economic development of the northeast that had been ravaged by Boko Haram attacks in order to secure a long term stability of the region.

On his part, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Owonishakin, said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was determined to ensure that the Nigerian Armed Forces were adequately equipped to enable personnel fight terrorism and other security challenges confronting the nation.

He explained that the partnership between the US military and Nigeria’s Armed Forces was borne out of the commitment of the present administration in waging war against global terrorism and violent extremism.

General Owonishakin, however, urged the participants to use the training opportunity to improve their military skills and capacity.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, reminded the participants of the enormous security challenges facing Nigeria and the need for them to adapt with the new tactics to deal with the situation.

He also reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army towards strict observance of human rights and international humanitarian laws in the ongoing military effort to liberate the northeast from the Boko Haram terrorists.

The training which would last for 12 weeks, is designed to be conducted in three phases for troops of the 145 Battalion.

FG, Lagos Trains 1000 Unemployed Youths On ICT

The Federal Ministry of Communication Technology, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Rockefeller Foundation has trained about 1000 unemployed youths in Lagos State on IT Digital Entrepreneurship Skills.

A statement signed by Mr. Olufemi Odubiyi, Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology, in Lagos on Tuesday urged the youths to utilise the privilege to become self-employed by improving their skills and become fully committed to micro-working.

According to the statement, the workshop should not be seen as mere propaganda, but a commitment from government to curb unemployment, urging the participants to get the best out of the workshop, by joining in the new phase of work and moving online.

It noted that the commissioner appealed to the participants, who were drawn from all over the state, to ensure that they internalized the new opportunity offered them to become employers of labour.

“The training session which was held in five batches of 200 participants each, was meant for Ordinary National Diploma (OND) graduates with basic computer knowledge on how to expand their knowledge about online work, which will serve as a source of income for the job seekers,’’ it said.

Britain Trains 150 Nigerian Army Personnel

The British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT) has organized a five-day capacity training seminar for 150 Warrant Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers of the Nigerian Army.

The seminar is part of the collaborations between Nigeria and Britain in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east and other similar security challenges across the oil-rich nation.

The commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Major General Sani Muazu, made the disclosure on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, at the seminar held at the Armed Forces and Staff College, Jaji in Kaduna State on Tuesday.

The Army Chief said the BMATT had been assisting Nigeria in the capacity building of its military forces in the areas of tactics for over 35 years.

He explained that the seminar would focus on the operation development of the officers, with the aim of making the Nigerian Army a professional force.

NDE Trains 60 Unemployed Graduates In Zamfara

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Zamfara would train 60 unemployed graduates and secondary school leavers in solar installation, poultry farming and commercial gardening.

The State Coordinator, Alhaji Muhammad Alhassan disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Tuesday.

Alhassan said out of the number, 30 graduates of various science courses who completed their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) would be trained under a ”three months Solar Energy Training Scheme” introduced by the directorate.

”Under this program the participants would be trained on solar energy installation,management and maintenance and already, registration of such graduates have commenced yesterday while the training will start soon after,” he stated.

Two Teenage Girls Electrocuted While Trying To Take Selfies On Top Of A Train

In May, an 18-year-old Romanian girl died as she tried to take “the ultimate selfie” on top of a train, now these 2 teenage girls are in a serious condition after being electrocuted as they tried to take a selfie on top of a train which they thought was no longer in use.
Russian friends Olesya Belmasova and Anastasiya Kirillova, who are both 16, suffered horrific burns after brushing against a live rail track in the Russian city of Taganrog.

They climbed on it because they thought it no longer worked but the train sat on tracks with thousands of volts running through them.

The friends were spotted by a passing worker, who witnessed the horrifying moment they were electrocuted.
“I was walking towards them to ask them what they were doing when they were suddenly blasted to the ground,” he said.
“One was completely blackened and the other was on fire as if she had exploded.”
The two girls were rushed to a children’s hospital with 70% burns and several fractures.
Anastasia, who can still talk despite the severity of her injuries, said:

“We climbed on top of the tank car and then I heard a loud clap. We fell off the car and onto the ground.

“My hair was on fire and I was in so much pain.”

A police spokesman said:

“They wanted to take some photos from the top of the tank car but were injured by a high-voltage electric current.”
