Super Eagles could shun London after visa hassle – Gernot Rohr

Nigeria could avoid playing friendlies in London from now on because of problems obtaining visas for staff and players, coach Gernot Rohr has said.

The Super Eagles played Senegal at non-league Barnet’s ground in north London last Friday, drawing 1-1, but a second scheduled match against Burkina Faso on Monday had to be called off.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said seven Burkinabe players failed to secure British entry visas.

The German coach said he will now suggest that friendlies and training camps be arranged on mainland Europe to avoid further difficulties as it was “too complicated to get visas” in Britain.

“I think it’s better to stay in Schengen, in Europe, than go to London where the people have problems. Even some players in our team couldn’t come, you know. They didn’t get the visa in time.”

Britain is not part of the Schengen zone, where there are no border controls between signatory countries and where international travellers require only a single visa for travel.

Currently, 26 European countries are part of the area.

Rohr told reporters in London on Monday night that Nigeria tried to find a last-minute replacement when it became clear the match would not go ahead against Burkina Faso.

Officials from Burkina Faso were reportedly told the application would be completed in Morocco, where the team was playing on Friday, as there was no British mission in Ouagadougou.

But the applications were still pending when the mission closed for the weekend.

Rohr, who has previously managed national sides Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso, has worked mainly with players based in mainland Europe since he took charge of Nigeria last year.

The former Bordeaux player and coach, who has also managed several European domestic sides, including Ajaccio, has said it costs less to do so and the facilities are better than in Nigeria.

Nigeria plan to set up a training camp in France in May and play a friendly against Corsica as part of preparations for a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in June.

Rohr denies setting standards for China-based players.

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr, has denied reports that he has set a standard every Nigerian player in the Chinese League must meet before being invited to the senior national team.

Super Eagles’ captain, John Obi Mikel, Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye are among Rohr’s first team members plying their trade in China. There are also reports that midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi is on the verge of joining the China train.

Denying a story that says he has put a lid on the number of players from the Chinese League he will invite to the national team, Rohr said in tweets in the NGSuperEagles handle, “my attention has been drawn to a story quoting me as setting a limit on number of players to be invited from the Chinese League. I do not know where this statement credited to me came from. I have had a very good and cordial relationship with the media.

“I therefore implore our media friends to be more professional in this regard so we can together get Nigeria football to the top.”

Super Eagles Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, also reiterated the coach’s desire to have the best available Nigerian players in his team in the build up to the African Nations Cup qualifier against South Africa in June and the back-to-back Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroun.

Ibitoye revealed that the Eagles boss would release the list of players for the friendly games against Senegal and Burkina Faso two weeks before the matches, adding that the coach is keeping close tabs on the players.

I’m still open to Super Eagles call up – Obafemi Martins

Former Inter-Milan player, Obafemi Martins, said he has not retired from international career with Nigeria.

Martins has not featured for the Super Eagles for three years.

Obagoal, who has also played in the US Major League Soccer, now plays for Chinese Super League, CSL, side Shanghai Shenhua.

The 32-year-old said he can still contribute his own quota to the Super Eagles if called up by coach Gernot Rohr. He, however, said he respects the fact that young players need to be given opportunity in the team.

Martins told reporters, “I never am through with international football. If the new coach of Nigeria Gernot Rohr needs me, I will gladly honour his call. I am fitter than ever.

“You have to respect the quality of the young players who are coming through with the national team, they deserve to be given their chance in the team.

“Playing in China is way higher than in the past, we now have top model professionals in the league, so it’s no longer a case of if you go to China, you are winding down your career.”

Rohr set to poach Everton youngster, Lookman to the Super Eagles.

Everton attacker, Ademola Lookman, has the option to represent Nigeria at international level and the African country has made an approach to seek out his allegiance, according to The Liverpool Echo.

The blistering young forward has moved to the Premier League outfit from Charlton Athletic and has impressed for Ronald Koeman’s men since his January transfer.

Lookman has already represented England at both under-19 and 20 level, with the Wandsworth-born starlet being tipped as a player that could feature in senior international football in the future.

Lookman qualifies for Nigeria through families ties and as such the former Charlton starlet seemingly has a tough decision to make over his national alliance.

The teenager has made five Premier League appearances so far for Everton this term and scored his first Premier League goal in the 4-0 win over Manchester City.

Lookman has played three games for the England national team and scored one goal. Considering that he will be of high probability to make the Three Lions first team in the near future and also because he was born in England and spent his entire life there, he may opt to represent England.

However, Nigeria boss, Gerard Rohr, will visit Lookman in the coming weeks after Lookman’s representatives held talks with the Nigerian FA last month.

AFCON 2019: Super Eagles to battle South Africa, Libya for qualification

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will have to battle against South Africa and Libya in their bid to return to competing at the biennial Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2019.

Placed in Group E in the draws conducted on Thursday, the Super Eagles will also be facing Seychelles in the AFCON 2019 qualifiers.

The three-time African champions have failed to qualify for two straight AFCONs – the 2015 and 2017 editions – and the third in four editions, after also missing out on the 2012 edition.

The next AFCON will be hosted by four-time African champions, Cameroon.

Only group winners are guaranteed a place at the next edition of the AFCON tournament

Cameroon will be hosting Africa’s biggest football event for the first time in 45 years, having last hosted in 1972, and edition which was won by Congo.

The central African country already hosted the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) last year, which Nigeria won.

Meanwhile, Chad, who pulled out of the qualifiers for the 2017 AFCON from Nigeria’s qualifying group, are banned from this edition of the competition as a result.

This year’s AFCON begins on Saturday in Libreville, Gabon.

NFF yet to pay Super Falcons, sure of settling Super Eagles’ entitlements before next 2018 World Cup qualifier

Despite the Super Falcons protest over non-settlement of allowances and others by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), after emerging victorious at the 2016 AWCON championship in Cameroun recently, the NFF has said that the body would not allowed any loopholes in their quest to see Eagles qualified for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

According to the NFF’s spokesman, Ademola Olajire, all outstanding bonuses the NFF is owing the Eagles would be settled before their next game against Cameroun.

He stated that the body is working round the clock to ensure the team prosecutes the tune up matches put in place to assist them blend properly ahead of the crucial tie at home.

Meanwhile, Eagles’ spokesman, Toyin Ibitoye, has also said that all the logistics needed to prosecute the remaining qualifiers have been discussed.

He said the days of the players and the officials of the football body having disagreement over the issue of bonuses and other entitlements before and after every game was over.

Ibitoye said that the senior male national team’s success so far in the qualifiers could be attributed to the well-tailored arrangements put in place to safeguard any form of anomalies since the start of the qualifiers.

He disclosed that team’s quest to put smiles on Nigerians faces still remains sacrosanct to the team.

He however added that plans are on track to make sure that Eagles beat Cameroun in Nigeria, which would give a clear chance to be in Russia come 2018 World Cup.

“Super Eagles would not have any problem on bonuses and entitlements during the qualifiers. Since the qualifiers began, the team has not faced any challenge in that aspect. Eagles’ exploit so far against Zambia and Algeria can be attributed to the players’ commitment and the arrangements put in place to settle their entitlements and other logistics. All apparatus needed by the team to execute their remaining games successfully would be put in place,’’ he said.

Mercy Akide-Udoh: My kids will never play for Nigeria

Former Super Falcons striker, Mercy Akide-Udoh, has said her children will never play for Nigeria, as long as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues to treat players poorly.

Akide-Udoh emerged the first ever African Women Footballer of the Year in 2001 and was named in the FIFA World All-Star in 2004.

The 41-year-old was reacting to the face-off between the current Falcons squad and the NFF over unpaid bonuses and allowances despite winning the 2016 African Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

“They fought with everything, so it should have been a happy ending. These kids have families, their parents are waiting for them to come back and put food on the table,” Akide-Udoh told BBC Sport.

“They’ve done their part and should be paid their money. I won’t be surprised if some of these kids don’t come back; opting to stay with their clubs rather than play for Nigeria.

“I am sorry, My kids are Americans, with the situation going on if something does not change my kids will never play for Nigeria. Who wants to suffer? We did it in our own time, this is a new generation, they should not be suffering what we suffered”, she added.

Victor Anichebe Deserves To Be In Super Eagles- Gernot Rohr

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has concluded plans to invite Sunderland forward Victor Anichebe while expressing worry in the loss of form of Watford striker Odion Ighalo.

Anichebe last played for Nigeria in 2012 after deciding to quit the Nigeria national team, but he later rescinded his decision in 2014 but since then he is yet to be called up by handlers of the team.

The 28-year-old’s run of games and goals for the English Premier League strugglers has caught the attention of the German coach of Nigeria, who is now set to honour him with a call-up to the national team.

“His inclusion is merited. He is doing very well in a top league for a top team, it’s only naturally we call him up. I’m happy for him, he will add a lot to how we play,” Rohr told newsmen.

The poor run of form of Ighalo is a source of worry for the German coach especially his bench role for the English club. “Ighalo’s situation is worrisome, he is one of our top players so we need him to be at his best for his club, but that is not the case right now.

“I’m backing him to return to his best form soon,” he said

Jordan Ibe Eyes Nigeria Call-Up After Being Snubbed By England

England-born Nigerian winger Jordon Ibe is ready to pledge his international allegiance to Nigeria after being repeatedly overlooked by his preferred England, it has been claimed.

The former Liverpool player, 20, who now plays for Bournemouth, initially snubbed pleas to play for the Super Eagles but is now ready to make a U-turn as England are not interested in him anymore.

According to mirror.co.uk, a source close to the Nigerian Football Federation said: “Jordon is willing to listen to what we have to offer.

“We are hoping he finds the project enticing enough to dump England where he is a youth international and play for Nigeria at senior level.”

Ibe was openly courted by former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh, who even travelled to Liverpool to meet with the player and his representatives.

But the youngster,  who was then rated as a huge prospect at Anfield, was bent on featuring for England.

Oliseh later confirmed that Ibe had opted for England, the ex-Nigeria coach tweeting at the time: “Jordon Ibe’s family informed me by telephone call that he was giving priority to an England call-up. We wish them well.”

Since that time, Ibe’s stock has fallen rapidly, losing his Liverpool place and having to make the switch to Bournemouth with an England spot no longer on the horizon.

Ibe has played for England at all levels from under-18s and has four under-21 caps.

He was reportedly the victim of a £25,000 robbery on November 6 this year as he was understood to have been hit by a vehicle containing four men, who threatened him with a knife before taking off with his watch .

Super Eagles ready for big leap on latest FIFA rankings.

Following the 3-1 defeat of Algeria on matchday 2 of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are set for a massive climb on the FIFA monthly world rankings for the month of November.

Nigeria is currently ranked 60th in the world and 11th in Africa, but all that is about to change when the rankings for November are released on the 24th, with the Super Eagles set to rise 10 places to rank 50th in the world and 7th in Africa, overtaking Ghana, Cameron, Mali & Congo.

According to the November rankings that will be released, it is expected that Algeria, following their 3-1 bashing at the hands of Nigeria, will drop 3 places to 38th in the world & 5th in Africa, while Senegal will most likely become Africa’s no 1, toppling Cote D’Ivoire.

THE PROBABLE AFRICAN RANKINGS FOR NOVEMBER 2016:

1. Senegal

2. Tunisia

3. CIV

4. Egypt

5. Algeria

6. Congo DR

7. B/Faso

7. Nigeria

8. Ghana

Meanwhile for the world rankings, Argentina are set to remain unmoved as the World’s number 1, but rivals Brazil will almost certainly topple Germany to number 2 spot, while Chile moves up three places to 4th position behind the Germans.

Belgium, Colombia, France, Portugal, Uruguay & Spain (5th -10th) will likely complete the world’s top 10 in that order.

Rohr success with Eagles, proof that foreign coaches work best for Nigeria – Babayaro

Former Super Eagles left-back, Celestine Babayaro is pleased with the current form and spirit in the Nigerian squad and their style of play under new manager, Gernot Rohr, saying it brings back memories of the glory days of Nigerian football.

The Franco-German coach, since assuming the post of the Nigerian technical adviser, has won all three games he has handled as coach, starting from the 1-0 win over Tanzania to the 2-1 and 3-1 win over Zambia and Algeria respectively.

Babayaro, who was one of Dutchman, Jo Bonfrere’s 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold winning Under-23 team, said the success of Rohr in the three games he handled so far has proven right, the assertions that foreign coaches are the best for Nigeria.

According to him, “The performances of the team under Rohr is a strong proof that foreign coaches work best for Nigeria.

“There’s an identity to the team and how they play. It’s like watching the 94 Eagles all over again.

“It is not rocket science but the team has evolved under him. They play with a whole lot of confidence and above all defensively they have the mentality of the German defence. Very mean.”

Cameroon Must Beat Nigeria – Fecafoot

Cameroon have said that victories over Nigeria in their next 2018 World Cup Qualifying fixture remain their surest way to get a ticket to Russia 2018 after a dismal display against Zambia in Limbe.

A Vincent Aboubakar first half stoppage time penalty helped Hugo Broos’ side salvage a 1-1 draw against Wedson Nyirenda’s men placing the Indomitable Lions second in Group B with just two points, four adrift of Gernot Rohr’s men.

In a statement released by the Cameroonian Football Federation, the four-time Afcon winners have set their sights on halting the Super Eagles’ great run of form to get to the quadrennial tournament.

“The coming months will be months of hard work: in January and February next national team will have to confirm its ambition to restore the national coat of arms, during his participation in the CAN GABON 2017 more under its qualifying campaign for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, that of September 2017 will be of great importance with two decisive matches against Nigeria, currently first in our group,” Fecafoot wrote on their website.

“To maintain the positive report on the performance of our various national teams, one goal is needed, one to shine in Gabon and win these two matches against Nigeria.”

Cameroon will hope to stage an upset when they visit Nigeria on August 28, 2017 before playing host on September 2nd, 2017.

Super Eagles’ individual quality finished Algeria – Laloko

Kashimawo Laloko believes the individual quality in the Super Eagles saw them win 3-1 in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Algeria on Saturday.

Victor Moses’ brace and John Mikel Obi’s strike ensured Gernot Rohr’s men overcame the stubborn Greens to remain Group B leaders at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

But the former NFF technical director insists the Super Eagles manager must reorganise his shaky defensive set-up if he hopes to qualify the country for the 2018 Fifa World Cup.

“I had fears for [Daniel] Akpeyi but he didn’t disappoint me because the goal he conceded was due to the indecision of the defenders,” Laloko said.

“Carelessness, complacency on the side of our defenders were responsible for that goal. We were very lucky. Algeria never came to Nigeria for a draw but to win and this is the first time we have beaten them hands down but the Algerians failed.

“Because of the individual quality and determination of the players helped us finish Algeria. Rohr has virtually done nothing but the players who wanted to make Nigerians proud.

“I think the performance of the players should be harnessed ahead of our upcoming games. Our defense department is still not organised.

“Someone of the defenders was running away from their responsibility. The man [Rohr] has not organized our defense probably and he needs to fix that by getting quality and regular defenders.

“Overall, I think the players have done well. I distinguished the players for their performance – Iheanacho, Iwobi. I told the coach in Abuja, that they still don’t have scores because when we play a game against a more organized defensive side.

“We must be careful with our defense if we want to get to Russia. All we need to do is to maintain our winning form. And I must say congratulations to Nigeria,” he concluded.

Super Eagles must improve in defence – Rohr

Gernot Rohr has said that Nigeria’s defence must improve despite their 3-1 victory over Algeria in the 2018 Africa World Cup Qualifying Group B match.

John Obi Mikel’s goal sandwiched by Victor Moses’ brace secured a much deserved three points for the Super Eagles with Nabil Bentaleb’s scorcher proving a mere consolation for Georges Leekens’ side.

The former Bordeaux boss said his side’s ‘only problems’ in the game surfaced in the second half when Riyad Mahrez and his fellow attackers started throwing tantrums at their defence.

“The only problems we had during the game were the chances Algeria were creating in the second half,” Rohr told media.

“It was tough stopping the Algerians but our defenders showed solidarity and we held on. It’s clear that we must improve our defence.

“We have tried three different players at right-back; they have done their best but we have to continue to find the ideal players for the defence.

“We will improve. I’m happy though that we’re strong offensively.”

Rohr also had good words for stand-in goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi who he claimed fought early nerves to have a good game.

“Daniel had a good game; you can’t blame him for the goal. He was nervous early on but he grew into the game and did well for us.”

Super Eagles Coach Rohr: “I will build my team around Mikel”.

Nigeria Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has stated boldly, without mincing words, that he is going to have his team built around Chelsea FC midfielder – JOHN OBI MIKEL against Algeria. He made this known ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier between Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Desert Foxes of Algeria.

There were doubts over John Obi Mikel’s fitness, due to the fact that he has been left out of  Chelsea’s first team  this season by Chelsea’s new manager Antonio Conte,  but Super Eagles coach Rohr insists that the player is in good shape and is fit to play the match.

The German said Mikel’s problem  at  Chelsea began after he represented Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where Nigeria won a bronze medal.

He said, “Mikel is currently being punished at Chelsea because of his outing for the Nigerian U-23 team at the last Olympics in Brazil.

“He has not featured under the new coach – Antonio Conte, since then. But I will still build  the team playing against Algeria around him because he is in a  good shape and fit for the match.

“Besides, Mikel is committed to the national team and he is a source of motivation to the other players.”

He says although the Algerians have a good team, the Eagles are focused on winning the encounter.

Mikel said he will not allow his  current  situation at Chelsea to affect his performance in  the match, adding that a win would boost the team’s chances of getting the sole ticket from the group.

Nigeria Super Eagles in Training

Although there have  been  cases of injuries  in the team,  Mikel said the development  would not affect them.

Asked whether he would still remain at Chelsea if his current situation persists, Mikel said everything would depend on what happens between now and January when he would take a decision.

We’ll give everything against Algeria – Mikel Obi

Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel says Nigeria “have to give everything” to win Saturday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria.

The Super Eagles began their campaign on a winning note against Zambia in Ndola, and victory against the Greens will boost their chances of qualifying for the global football showpiece in Russia.

According to the Chelsea midfielder, the players are aware of the game’s importance and would do all it takes to ensure victory in Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

“We all know what this match means, why we have to give everything,” Mikel told NFF website.

“Yes, we started the race well by winning in Zambia, but we have to approach this match even more seriously.

“The Algerians will come with determination and they will play hard, but we will play harder.

“The World Cup is the biggest stage; every player wants to be there. I am happy we have such a young and energetic team.

“ I played at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 but there are many of these players who have never been to the World Cup. They want to be there.

“Three points; that is what we will be playing for. We are committed and the visit of the Vice President (Professor Yemi Osinbajo) to our training in Abuja has motivated us even more.”

Nigeria top Group B with three points, while the Algerians who were held to a 1-1 draw against Cameroon boast of one point with Zambia sitting at the base with no point.

Uyo Stadium pitch gets Super Eagles pass mark.

The Super Eagles have approved the pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo ahead of tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier against Algeria.

Eagles coach Gernot Rohr and several players complained about the state of the pitch after a 1-0 win over Tanzania in September.

However, Eagles assistant coach Imama Amapakabo said there has been remarkable improvement to the turf since the game against Tanzania.

“The pitch is in a lot better condition, a big improvement from the last time we played Tanzania here,” said Imama.

Israel-based midfielder John Ogu also commended the condition of the pitch.

The Akwa Ibom State Government has assured the pitch will be worked on for Saturday’s game and there were several inspection visits including one with officials from the Algeria Football Federation (FAF) led by their vice-president.

Super Eagles Determined To Secure Victory Against Fennecs

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will walk onto the pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday with the mind to secure victory against the Fennecs of Algeria.

There have been 17 clashes between both teams (all at competitive level), with Nigeria winning eight times, drawing three and losing six. And Nigeria captain Mikel John Obi was less than three years old the last time Algeria defeated Nigeria, in the final of the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations in Algiers.

Super Eagles’ current goalkeepers’ trainer Aloysius Agu was the Eagles’ goalkeeper and captain that day, 16th March 1990. It was a tough game at the July 5 Stadium in Algiers, but the Fennecs won their first (and still only) Africa title when Cherif Oudjani’s long range effort beat Agu for the only goal of the match.

At that same competition, Algeria had beaten the Eagles 5-1 in the opening match. But the Eagles would remember that and pay back the Fennecs when lashing their hosts 5-2 in Oran in a 2006 World Cup qualifier on 4th September 2005.

The first clash between both countries was on 10th January 1973, during the football event of the 2nd All-Africa Games that Nigeria hosted. The match ended 2-2. Seven years later, the Green Eagles would thrash the Algerians 3-0 to lift their first Africa Cup title.

In their last four confrontations, the Eagles have enjoyed a winning streak against the Algerians, which is more than the three consecutive wins Algeria had over Nigeria between October 1981 and March 1982. In the qualifying race for Espana ’82, Algeria beat Nigeria 2-0 in Lagos and 2-1 in Constantine, and the Fennecs then came from behind to edge the Eagles 2-1 at the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations in Libya.

WCQ: Eagles’ curse will continue to haunt Algeria – Kalu

Algeria’s World Cup dreams are over no thanks to the Eagles, who will continue to punish the North Africans for killing Nigeria’s Mundial ambitions on home soil in 1981. This is the submission of Pillar of Sports, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu.

According to Kalu: ”The Desert Warriors have come to the end of the road. The 1980 Nations Cup winning Eagles will never forgive them for that World Cup qualifier that sent Nigeria packing 35 years ago. It affected those Green Eagles negatively.”

The former Abia State governor painted a clearer picture of the anguish.

“That 0-2 loss to Les Fennecs in Lagos retired Christian Chukwu permanently from international soccer. Segun Odegbami was stripped of the Captain’s band. Tunde Bamidele lost the opportunity of playing professional soccer abroad, and for the very first time, Aloy Atuegbu, watched from the bench as an Eagle,” Kalu said.

Ever since that ouster, the Algerians, also known as the Greens [El Khadra], have not beaten Nigeria in a World Cup match. On the way to USA ’94, the Eagles beat them 4-1 in Lagos, in a match Austin Okocha scored his first goal for the national team.

To cap it all, the Eagles earned their first ever World Cup ticket on Algerian soil thanks to Finidi George’s late equalizer that ended the second leg 1-1.

During the Germany 2006 qualifiers, Nigeria beat Algeria 1-0 in Abuja and went on to massacre their hosts 5-2 in the return leg. Unfortunately, that was not enough to take the Eagles to Deutschland.

Kalu also taunted Algerian veteran, Lakdar Belloumi, over comments that the Eagles will be under pressure in Uyo.

“Yes, Belloumi has forgotten so easily that the days of Rabah Madjer, Faouzi Mansouri, Nourrredine Kourichi and Mustapha Dahelb only blossomed after Eagles pounded them 3-0 to win the 1980 Nations Cup. They beat us black and blue a year later. Now, the Eagles have cursed Algeria not to beat them again in a World Cup match. And that curse cannot be washed away soon, not even by a veteran,” he added.

According to him, supporters clubs of local teams in the state will also be mobilised to compliment the Nigerian Football Supporters Club to cheer the Super Eagles to victory.

Edem said: “As far as Akwa Ibom state is concerned, there will be no margin for errors for this weekend’s qualifier.

“We are confident that Uyo will host all the Super Eagles home matches for the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.”

Nigeria currently leads their group in the Russia 2018 African qualifiers after a 2-1 win in Ndola against host Zambia last month.

We Are Under Pressure To Win Against Nigeria – Bentaleb

Algerian midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has admitted that the Fennecs are under immense pressure to deliver when they face Nigeria in their second 2018 World Cup Qualifying match in Uyo on Saturday.

The Desert Warriors were forced to a 1-1 draw at home to Cameroon in their opening fixture, and they must win against Group B leaders Nigeria in Uyo to strengthen their bid for a place in Russia.

Bentaleb who missed the opening fixture in Bilda due to suspension says it will a herculean task recording a win with five of their regular players.

The Algerian team will be without Adam Ounas, Hilal Soudani, Rachid Ghezzal and Ryad Boudebouz in the game against Nigeria.

“I must say that we are a bit under pressure because we need a good result against Nigeria. But I’m optimistic because Algeria always gives good output in difficult times,” Bentaleb told Le Buteur.

The on-loan Schalke 04, played down the timing of hiring a new coach within a qualifying series could have, with Georges Leekens replacingMilosec Rajevac after the opening fixture.

“Risky? No. It remains the choice of the president of the federation. Now, if the old coach did not have the

Ighalo Not Bothered By Goal Drought, Meets Rohr Along With Success

Watford striker Odion Ighalo has stated that he remains unfazed by his current goal drought for club and country.

Ighalo met with Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr recently, along with Isaac Success, who missed the Eagles’ World Cup qualifier against Zambia due to injury.

Nigeria star Ighalo, who last scored for the Hornets in their 4-2 win over West Ham in an English Premier League game at the London Stadium in September, is hoping to finish the season on a high despite his current poor form in front of goal.

The former Granada forward who has scored twice in nine appearances in all competitions so far this season said that he continues to work hard to rekindle his old scoring form.

“I’m calm about it and I am confident that I will start scoring again soon,” Ighalo said.

“That the goals are not coming now doesn’t mean I won’t score again. It’s better to start slowly and finish on a high. I just want everybody to be patient with me on this.”

He also revealed that his compatriot Isaac Success will be a big hit once he regains his full fitness.

Success who has scored once in six appearances has been plagued with a muscular injury which saw him travel to Spain for treatment.

The 20-year-old has since arrived back at Vicarage Road but it remains to be seen if he will feature this weekend when Watford host Hull City.

“He (Success) is a great player but injury has slowed his start to the EPL,” Ighalo.

“I’m confident he will be a big hit here and I will be supporting him to succeed here.”

Ighalo later tweeted his excitement at meeting with Rohr, while the striker posted a picture of himself, Rohr and Success.

‘I Can Qualify Nigeria To World Cup, I Have The Heart Of A Winner ‘ – New Super Eagles Technical adviser Rohr says

Gernot Rohr, who was on Tuesday confirmed by the NFF as Super Eagles new technical adviser says he believes he can qualify Nigeria to the Russia 2018 World Cup and even take the country to the latter stages of the tournament.

“I am enthusiastic to get to work. This is a big challenge because Nigeria has big players everywhere and has the ability to do well internationally.

‘ he told the NFF official website. “I have a German heart – the heart of a winner,”
“I have confidence that with the right atmosphere and the right support, the Super Eagles have the capacity not only to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, but get to the latter stages of the competition.”
NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, happy with the German’s appointment on a two year deal said;

“We are happy that this has been sealed and we can now focus on other arrangements for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in October,”

Fans To Watch Important Nigeria vs Egypt Afcon Qualifier For N1000 And N300 Respectively

Nigerian football fans waiting to get a glimpse of action when the Super Eagles tackle the Pharaohs of Egypt should get ready to part with N1000 and N300 for covered and open seats respectively according to the marketing department of the NFF.

The important AFCON qualifier to be played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Friday, March 25 has hosted several matches of the various National Teams over the past decades.

NFF In Talks With Enyeama, Emenike Over Possible Return To Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), says it is in talks with Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike, former goalkeeper and striker respectively, over possible return to Super Eagles.

Super Eagles Interim Coach Samson Siasia who said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, said the aim was to ensure that the country assembles its best legs against Egypt.

The Super Eagles have crucial two-legged Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), qualifying matches against the Pharaohs of Egypt.

The first leg encounter takes place in Kaduna on March 25, while the return leg match is scheduled for Cairo on March 29.

Siasia said NFF was exploring every avenue capable of bringing success, adding that it had taken steps to facilitate the players’ return to the team.

“We just finished talking with the NFF Technical Director, Shaibu Amadu; we are just putting the list of invited players together and after the NFF Technical Committee meeting on Thursday, the list should be released’’, he said.

“The Super Eagles’ Secretary, Dayo Enebi, will be contacting the invited players and he is talking with Enyeama and Emenike; we will talk with them when they are ready to talk.

“We will be happy to see these players back in the team if they can help us to qualify for 2017 AFCON’’, he said.

The Olympic silver medal winning coach, however, said he was not under any pressure to win Egypt.

“The job for me is tasking but we are here for challenges and, being a challenge does not mean that it is a mountain we cannot climb.

“I am not feeling any pressure; all I want to do is to ensure we do well in the two games against Egypt.’’

Siasia was appointed on Friday by the NFF as interim Super Eagles coach following the resignation of Sunday Oliseh.

He is to be assisted by Flying Eagles’ coach Emmanuel Amuneke, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu.

‘Samson Siasia Has Better Coaching Pedigree Than Oliseh’ – Onigbinde

Former CAF and FIFA instructor and one time coach of the Super Eagles Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has hailed the appointment of u-23 coach Samson Siasia as the new Super Eagles interim coach, saying he is better suited to the job than Sunday Oliseh, who was temperamental and didn’t have any experience for the role.

“When Oliseh was being appointed, I did not raise objection to it but I was particular about his background,” Onigbinde told completesportsnigeria.com. “And with the new people that have come on board, I believe they have better coaching pedigree than Oliseh.
And that was my objection when Oliseh was appointed, question of experience and behaviour, those were the two issues I raised. And during his tenure, he exhibited lack of all those things clearly. Siasia has been there once and I hope he would have learnt his lessons. I remember when he first came, in a meeting with the technical committee, I cautioned him on a certain step he was taking. I have no reason to hate any football coach in this country or anywhere, but we are talking about the fate of our country. And just about two weeks ago, as if I knew, I sent a message of commendation to Amuneke.” He added: “What is important is they getting there and doing what they are supposed to do. Where they feel that they have problems, if they see some people around them who could put them through, they should not hesitate because nobody is an island.”

Sunday Oliseh Resigns As Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh has announced his resignation as Chief Coach of the Super Eagles.

After several weeks of controversy between the Chief Coach of Nigeria’s national team, Sunday Oliseh and his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Oliseh, in the wee hours of Friday, announced his resignation as Chief Coach.

Oliseh who took to his verified Twitter handle, @SundayOOliseh to announce his resignation said:

“I feel fortunate, blessed and eternally grateful for having had the honour to play, captain and coach this great nation of ours, Nigeria. Due to contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, Assistant Coaches and myself, I resign as Super Eagles Chief Coach.”

Oliseh has also changed his profile on the micro-blogging site to Ex-Chief Coach of the Super Eagles.

Recall that Oliseh, signed a three-year deal on July 15, 2015, succeeding Stephen Keshi, who was sacked at the start of July. He spent barely eight months as Eagles chief coach.

Oliseh, earned 63 caps for Nigeria and helped the country win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and Olympic gold in 1996. He became the fourth player from the class of 1994 to manage the Super Eagles after Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia and Keshi.

Nike To Review Partnership Deal With NFF Over Super Eagles’ Poor Performance

Sports kit manufacturing company NIKE may currently be reviewing their partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The company gave a hint of their intentions in a letter sent to the NFF on Thursday, asking the federation to furnish them with some facts.

NAN reports that the review may not be unconnected with the ratings of the Super Eagles, the senior national male football team, which is NFF’s major selling point.

The team’s current position in the latest FIFA rankings is 66th position in the world and 14th in Africa, their worst ever.

NAN also understands that the barrage of criticism which surrounded the NIKE deal when it was announced might have also necessitated the review of the partnership.

It is also understood that performances of the other nine national teams including the Golden Eaglets and Super Falcons would also be reviewed by NIKE.

Already, Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF General Secretary, has asked Ademola Olajire, the Federation’s Assistant Director of Communications, to furnish him with the team’s latest status in football.

NAN reports that NFF had signed the partnership deal with NIKE to run from April 1, 2015 to 2018 after the expiration and non-renewal of its deal with Adidas.

The NIKE deal is worth $750,000 in the first year, with NIKE supplying kits worth $1million to Nigeria in the year 2017 and 2018.

The partnership was expected to see the American sports brand design and develop football kits for both the country’s men and women national football teams until 2018.

The three-and-a-half year contract was signed by NFF President Amaju Pinnick and Sanusi, with Tina Salminen, NIKE’s African Football Sports Marketing Director, representing the company.(NAN)

NFF Apologises to Nigerians over Super Eagles’s Failure at African Nations Championship

The Nigeria Football Federation has apologized to the Federal Government and the good people of Nigeria for the Super Eagles’s failure at the 4th African Nations Championship in Rwanda.

Leading the Group C table before kick –off of the final matches on Tuesday, the Super Eagles failed to fly in a 0-1 defeat by Guinea in Rubavu that eliminated Nigeria from the continental houseparty in Rwanda.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick reiterated that the African Nations Championship is “both developmental and preparatory for bigger challenges,” and said without mincing words that the Federation would now shift focus to the qualification race for the bigger Africa Cup of Nations.

“We apologise to Nigerians for the poor outing of the Super Eagles in Rwanda, but we toe the line of CAF which states that CHAN is a developmental and preparatory competition. Of course, as Nigerians, we love to win always, and we feel bad when we don’t.

I want us to take the positives from this tournament. A player like Chisom Chikatara broke onto the global platform and players like Usman Mohammed, Chima Akas, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Austin Oboroakpo and Ifeanyi Mathew confirmed their class.

“For me, it is disappointing that we did not progress. But the NFF will now focus on the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, and start preparations early for the remaining rounds,” Pinnick said.

The Super Eagles have a quick, top-of-the-table double –take against Pharaohs of Egypt in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying race, with the first leg in Nigeria on March 23 and the return leg in Egypt five days later.

In June, the Super Eagles take on Chad in N’Djamena before hosting Tanzania in the final round of matches in September.

“Coach @SundayOOliseh: We apologize to Nigerians for this loss, we never planned to exit the tournament this early. The boys gave their best”.

Coach Sunday Oliseh said that losing 1-0 to Guinea in yesterday’s last group C match of the Africa Nations Championship, was something he and his team did not envisage.

He regretted the loss coming after the Super Eagles have chalked up four points from their two previous matches and only needed a draw against Guinea to advance to the quarter-final.

“We apologise to Nigerians for this loss, we never planned to exit the tournament this early. The boys gave their best,” said a sober Oliseh after the game.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation also expressed regrets over the Super Eagles shock exit.

NFF president, Amaju Pinnick reiterated that the African Nations Championship is “both developmental and preparatory for bigger challenges,” and said without mincing words that the Federation would now shift focus to the qualification race for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

KickandFollow.com: 5 Players That Have Knocked Out The Super Eagles From Cup Competitions

The Super Eagles of Nigeria is a team to reckon with in world football. The team has participated in 5 world cups, but since its debut in the USA 94 world cup the team has not gone past the round of 16.

KickandFollow.com takes a look at 5 players that have upset the Super Eagles in the World cup and qualifying campaign.

  1. Roberto Baggio

bagiio

Nigeria put up a sensational performance under head coach Clemens Westerhof  to top group D on goal difference after defeating Bulgaria  3-o and Greece 2-0. Despite losing to Argentina 2-1, the super Eagles still progressed as group winners. The Super Eagles were then drawn with Italy in the knockout stage. The match ended in a drawby full time with goals coming from Emmanuel Amuneke in the 25th minute and Roberto Baggio in the 88th Minute.

It was a very feisty game as the Eagles were caged by the Azzurri for most parts of the game, the referee also dished out 9 yellow cards and 1 red card; as Gianfranco Zola was sent off.

The Azzurri had to rely on the Vision of Baggio who was open in the box after recieving the ball from Roberto Mussi, and the Italian wasted no time in slotting the ball past Peter Rufai in the 88th minute.

The Match had to go into penalties after extra time, with Baggio being the hero once again, as he sent the gallant eagles crashing out of the tournament.

  1. Henrik Larsson

lars

The former Celtic and Barcelona Forward sent the Festus Onigbinde led eagles crashing out of  the Korea/Japan world cup.

The Eagles had already lost to Argentina courtesy of a Gabriel Batistuta goal but needed a win against the Scandinavians to qualify. Unfortunately, the Super Eagles lost.

A superb goal from Julius Aghahowa put the Eagles ahead but two quick fire goals from the diminutive forward sent Nigeria out of the competition, as England defeated Argentina to book a qualifying spot.

The next match for the Eagles against England was dead rubber as England and Sweden had Qualified. Sweden took the top spot on goal difference and went to the knockout stage where they were defeated by Bruno Metsu’s Senegal.

  1. Paulo José Lopes de Figueiredo

The Angolan forward scored in the draw between Nigeria and Angola in the 2006 world cup qualifiers. Nigeria had already lost the first leg in Angola by a lone goal courtesy of an Akwa Strike.

The second leg was played in kano and JJ Okocha got on the score sheet. However with 60 minutes on the clock, Figueiredo equalized, and Angola progressed to the world cup finals at the expense of Nigeria based on the head to head rule.

  1. Didier Drogba

Despite the disappointment of missing the 2006 world cup, the eagles channeled their energy to the Nations cup and performed extremely well under the tutelage of Coach Austine Eguavoen.

The joy of the Eagles was however cut short by the Magnificent Didier Drogba, who pounced on a loss of concentration between the Nigerian centre backs and slotted the ball in between the legs of Goal-keeper Vincent Enyeama to send the Eagles out of the semi-finals in the 2006 African cup of Nations.

The Ivory Coast striker pounced on a lack of concentration between the Nigerian centre backs and slotted the ball in between the legs of Goal-keeper Vincent Enyeama, to send the Eagles out of the semi-finals in the 2006 African cup of Nations.

  1. Paul Pogba

The French Maestro got the better of the Super Eagles in the Knockout round of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, when he got on the end of the score sheet in the 79th Minute of the game. Sadly the match was done and dusted with an own goal by Joseph Yobo in Stoppage time which signaled the end of the Eagles adventure in Brazil.

CHAN: Eagles Resume Training After Weekend Break

Nigeria’s Super Eagles Team B will resume their camping in Abuja after two days break at the weekend as they prepare for the African Nations Championship Rwanda 2016.

Coordinator of the team, former international, Patrick Pascal, said that the assistant coaches who stood in for recuperating Chief Coach Sunday Oliseh are expected to continue the training with the players ahead of 3 January, 2016 date for the departure of the Eagles to South Africa where the second phase of camping will take place.

He said new players will join the team as they resume on Monday. Lobi Stars of Makurdi central defender, Samson Gbadebo is coming in to replace a player who is nursing an injury. So also are U-23 duo of Usman Mohammed and Bature Yaro. The players were involved with the Dream Team VI at the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal.

Mohammed plays for relegated Glo Premier League side, FC Taraba. He was a regular for Samson Siasia’s team as they rolled all the way to a first title at the competition including securing a ticket for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Pascal also debunked the rumours that Chief Coach, Oliseh would not be available for the CHAN in Rwanda because of his sickness.
“This is not true because we are in constant talks with Oliseh who assured us that he will be with us. He told us that he would see his doctor this week to decide the state of his health for the CHAN. So I don’t think the news of him not going with us to Rwanda is true,” Pascal said.
While in South Africa for the second phase of camping, the Eagles Team B will take on Cote d’Ivoire in a friendly match in Pretoria.
Another game against Angola is also lined up by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Nigeria kick off their CHAN 2016 campaign against Niger on 18 January next year at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo. They will also face Tunisia and Guinea in their other group matches.

It will be recalled that the footballer took to the football pitch to propose to his wife in front of the the players and fans. Aderonke Bello: The Dominance Of The Igbo Tribe In Nigerian Football

Growing up in a family that loves football has shown me a lot about the great footballers we have ever had in Nigeria.
I recall the likes of Samuel Okwaraji, Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Christian Chukwu, Emeka Ezeugo, Mikel Obi, Onyekachi Apam, Uche Okechukwu, etc. All the above named great footballers are Igbo men, as most of the footballers of such calibre to have ever come out of Nigeria are from the tribe.
When observing trending issues on the social media sometime last week, I was privy to discussions and sometimes arguments by some stakeholders and learned people in sport about the fact that the Igbos are dominating the national teams, both male and female, while some accused the team handlers of partiality in their squad selections. Many insinuated that the guys are always the ones they called because they feel they are better talented in football. However, this does not exclude the female players.
Nigerians are interesting people in its entirety when it comes to tribal issues, truth be told, they dominated and are still dominating football in Nigeria. Kudos has to be given to them, worthy of acknowledgement.
Having said that, as a proud Yoruba woman, most of my friends are Igbos, so, no one should accuse me of tribalism or picking on this wonderful footballing tribe. They have collectively brought glory to our great nation Nigeria in so many ways. In recent times, the squad that won the 2013 African Cup of Nations was full of the Igbos, even the 2013 world cup winning U-17 squad. The upcoming dudes are Kelechi Iheanacho, Chidiebere Nwakali and many others, to name but two. Looking at the Nigerian Leagues across the Nation, on its own, most of the players plying their trade there are of the Igbo Tribe.
Moving out of the country right now, the statistics of the players in different leagues abroad in the Scandinavian countries, the middle belt, even in Yemen, are of the Igbo Tribe or descend. I feel they should be happy and proud of their inputs and contribution to local and global football while they rightfully enrich their pockets in return. Many of them have adopted other countries due to the lack of chance to feature for their Nation. They are of great determination, these folks represent us well with their sportsmanship.
I remember a super eagles player, Sunday Mba who scored the winning goal at 2013 AFCON, Mikel Obi, young Kenneth Omeruo was also superb with the strong input from the now retired Emmanuel Emenike.
Statistically, about 70% overall national participation goes to the Igbo guys while the remaining 30% is shared amongst other tribes. Critically speaking, some people from other tribes fade away so soon while the Igbo guys stand the test of time, and are more devoted to the game, conversely, have lengthy footballing careers, I wonder how they do it. What is their secret recipe?

Reasons behind their love for football are many and after a deep thought and questions raised, I realized that, this set of people like the game of football more than the rest of the tribes in the country, and also get more encouragement in doing so.
It can be attributed to a number of reasons, singularly or additionally; Physical prowess, as they’re genetically sturdier than the other tribes; Better encouraged by the number of successful Igbo players; Their enterprising nature afford them the ability to foresee the riches that may lie ahead despite the short-termism of the career; Its better embraced as a way out of poverty within the community; Simply better enjoyed in practice than the other tribes; Better scouting network within the tribe.
Meanwhile, you can hardly see a Hausa girl play football and also, only few Yoruba girls come out to play the round leather game, can we safely blame this on their religion and culture? Of course yes!
Some scouts will rather an Igbo footballer, because it is widely believed that they take football more seriously. Another thing that came to my mind is that the igbos are business oriented and one fast way to big money is through football. I really thank them for their efforts and I hope they keep contributing their skills to bringing glory to the Nation through football.

NFF Bans Super Eagles from Social Media Use in Camps After Oliseh/Enyeama Drama

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has hinted that Super Eagles players will be restricted on their use of social media while on international duty following the face off between Sunday Oliseh and Vincent Enyeama last Tuesday.

NFF supremo Amaju Pinnick made this known after a meeting in Belgium on Saturday with the main protagonists involved in the dispute.

Lille numero uno Vincent Enyeama made headlines last week after he took to Instagram to express his disappointment on how he was mistreated by Sunday Oliseh.

“No player launches his career through the social media. When players are at their clubs, they don’t broadcast camp situation on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, ” Pinnick said. The same restraint and discipline must be observed in the national camp.”

Enyeama won’t be the first Super Eagles player to take to a social networking site to voice his displeasure at team officials, with ex-West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie launching an attack on the NFF via Twitter after his omission from the 2013 African Cup of Nations roster.

Why I shunned Nigeria – Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe

Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe confirmed on Tuesday he had decided   to play football for England rather than Nigeria.

The 19-year-old, who was approached by Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh to switch his international allegiance to his father’s country, is qualified to play for the Super Eagles until he has made a competitive senior appearance for England.

“It was my choice and it feels the right choice,” Ibe told Liverpool’s website.

“I was born here and have played in the younger age groups. I want to take it up to the first team one day.”

The London-born forward played for England Under-21 team against USA Under-23s side and then against Norway , alongside his Liverpool teammate colleague Joe Gomez.

“It was great and I enjoyed myself,” Ibe said.

“I felt as though Joe and I did well. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to the coming games.

“You want to represent your country well. Even at times when you’ve not got games for Liverpool, doing well with England is vital.”

Ibe, who spent time on loan with Derby County last season, has played at least some part in all five of Liverpool’s Premier League games in 2015-16, starting two of them.

Kenneth Omeruo appointed Super Eagles’ vice-captain

Kenneth Omeruo has been named the vice-captain of the Super Eagles, for this weekend’s AFCON 2017 tie against Tanzania.

The team will be captained by Ahmed Musa, in the absence of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who is bereaved and John Mikel Obi, who was dropped from the squad.

Omeruo, who now plays his football at Turkish club Kasimpasa on loan from Chelsea, is expected to partner William Troost-Ekong in defence as he has featured in all three games so far in the Turkish League.

On The Ball : The Rise Of Dele Alli By Edward Okaro

In this piece, I’ll be talking a little bit about the two things I absolutely adore as an avid football/soccer fan:

(a)The Barclays Premier League (The most watched league in the world) and

(b) My beloved Nigerian National Men’s Football team (or the Super Eagles as they are fondly called)

The subject to which these two things are centred around is none other than promising Nigerian born starlet Bamidele ‘Dele’ Alli and I’ll be giving you the low-down on this precocious young talent.

WHO IS DELE ALLI?

Alli's outstanding season with MK Dons led to him being named young player of the year

Bamidele Jermaine ‘Dele’ Alli was born in the town of Milton Keynes on the 11th of April 1996, where he joined the youth setup of Milton Keynes Dons as an 11 year old. Such was his undoubtable talent that he broke into the first team five years later at the tender age of 16, during the 2012/2013 English Football League One season. He became a regular fixture in the team and had his most prolific spell in the 2014/2015 season, where he came into global reckoning with an inspired performance against Premier League Giants Manchester United in the Capital One Cup, a match which MK Dons won 4-0. This led to him being scouted constantly by some of the biggest clubs on the continent including the likes of Liverpool (the club he supported as a boy), Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur amongst others. Rumours even began circulating that Alli had been convinced to join Liverpool by Steven Gerrard, his idol. Speculation continued on where his future would lie until February 2015 when he signed for North London giants Tottenham Hotspur for £5 million. He was immediately loaned back to MK Dons where he continued to impress and ultimately helped his team to Promotion from the Football League One with an impressive return of 16 goals and 9 assists from midfield. Despite being only 19, Alli has gone from strength to strength and already has some noteworthy individual accolades to his name such as the Football League Young Player of the Month for August and January, Football League Young Player of the Year award for 2014/2015 and was named in the Football League One Team of the Year.

STYLE OF PLAY

Many comparisons have been drawn between Alli and his footballing idol, Liverpool Legend Steven Gerrard, because of his eye for a killer pass, quick thinking on the ball and impressive shooting ability. But the most noticeable attribute of this young man in the games I’ve seen him play is his work rate, his 39 League starts a testament to his remarkable stamina levels.

PROSPECTS

Alli secured a lucrative move to Tottenham Hotspur in January

On the club front, the future seems to be bright for the 19 year old, since Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino prides himself on bringing through young talents into his first team. You only need to look at the likes of Harry Kane, Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason who have seamlessly made the transition to the first team, with Kane and Mason being called up to the England senior squad this past season. On the international scene however, there still seems to be a bit of uncertainty over where his allegiance will lie considering that he is eligible for Nigeria through his father and for England through his mother. There are even rumours about Ex-Wimbledon striker John Fashanu, who is of Nigerian descent, contacting Alli about the possibility of him opting for Nigeria. Seeing as head coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, has in recent times placed his faith in talents from the diaspora (Williams Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun come to mind), don’t be too surprised to see him lining up in the green and white of Nigeria anytime soon……not that I or any other true fan of the Super Eagles would be complaining!!!

Keshi Finally Returns As Super Eagles’ Coach

Stephen Keshi has been re-engaged as the coach the Super Eagles after nine months the initial deal expired. Keshi’s initial contract ran out at the end of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in July, after Nigeria crashed out in the Round of 16, losing to France.

A new administration of the Nigeria Football Federation was voted in in September with the promise that Keshi’s contract will be renewed without delay. But it too the Amaju Pinnick led NFF till April 21, 2015 to meet the promise, after almost sealing a replacement for Keshi.

Keshi in presence of top NFF executives and the media on Tuesday signed the contract to head the Super Eagles for a two year period. “We lost in the past, we drew and we won. But we have to move forward now. This is a new page in Nigerian football and what happened in the past has happened. I have what it takes to take d country forward,” Keshi said after signing his new two year contract.

“We need the media. I cannot do this alone. I will work with office of the NFF to move our football forward.”

NFF vice President Seyi Akinwunmi explained the reason behind the delay. “The delay in Keshi’s return was occasioned by the elongated and unwarranted crises we had last year. The NFF have agreed to continually sponsor Keshi on refresher courses.”

With the latest development, Keshi will now swing into action as the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup begins in June.

Super Eagles Go Down In FIFA Ranking

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have slipped four places in the latest FIFA ranking released on Thursday by the world football governing body. Nigeria went down from 41 to 45 in the world, and from 7th to 8th spot in Africa.

Nigeria lost 1-0 to Uganda in a friendly played on March 26 when Farouk Miya gave the East Africans a surprise victory in Uyo after Enyeama parried but couldn’t keep out his 81st-minute shot. Three days later, the Super Eagles played a 1-1 away draw with South Africa in another friendly.

Algeria maintained their top position on the continent, but also slipped three steps from 18th spot in March to 21st spot in the April ranking. Ivory Coast and Ghana held on to the 2nd and 3rd places in Africa respectively, but also suffered setback in the world stage.

Tunisia, Senegal and Cape Verde did well to keep their positions in the continent’s top six, as Guinea displaced Nigeria to the 7th place. On the global stage, Germany continue their reign at the top, and are trailed by Argentina who remained unmoved in the 2nd place.

Belgium returned to the 3rd spot, returning Colombia to the 4th place. Brazil, Netherlands, Portugal Uruguay, Switzerland and Spain are the top ten in the world.

NFF Confirms Super Eagles Friendly With Bafana Bafana In Nelspruit

The Nigeria Football Federation on Friday announced that the Senior National Team, Super Eagles, would play a friendly game against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa on March 29.

The match comes a little over four months after a 2-2 draw in Uyo between the two teams which kept Nigeria out of the 30th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Equatorial Guinea.

The South African team, however, endured a tough AFCON tournament, failing to qualify from the group stage although they did well during the qualifying series en-route to the AFCON 2015.

NFF in a statement said the friendly match between the two countries would take place at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

It said that the venue had hosted Nigeria’s first two matches at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, recording two 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso and Zambia.

“Both teams will use the platform to prepare for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying series,’’ NFF said.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Henry Nwosu, Nigeria’s ex-international, described the proposed friendly match as “a good development’’, adding that Bafana Bafana are no push over in football.

He said that, Bafana Bafana had proved their capabilities prior to the 2015 edition of the Africa Football Cup in Equatorial Guinea.

“It is a great development, Bafana Bafana will give Super Eagles a good match because they are a good side with quality players.

“However, the question is under who Super Eagles will be playing in South Africa and which players will be paraded on that day.

“The NFF needs to put its house in order as regards the Eagles coach and also state the players that will be filing out on that day. (NAN)

Adidas Dumps Super Eagles as Team Loses $7m

Nigeria are struggling to find a kit sponsor after German manufacturers Adidas decided not to renew its deal with the Super Eagles.

In August, Adidas complained that Nigeria’s coach and some players violated contractual obligations by wearing a rival’s kit at major events. And now Nigeria have lost a deal worth $7m-a-year, which will increase the problems for the cash-strapped team. Nigeria’s Football Federation admitted finding a new sponsor is proving hard.

The Super Eagles have endured a difficult year, with problems both on and off the pitch damaging their reputation and their results.

As well as being penalised with by a global ban by Fifa for government interference in football matters, Nigeria failed to qualify to defend their Africa Cup of Nations title at next year’s finals in Equatorial Guinea. And a top official of the NFF told BBC Sport that major sportswear companies are not interested in becoming the country’s new kit supplier.

But NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire says the body is negotiating with other manufacturers or may still salvage a deal with Adidas. “We currently are in discussions with multiple parties regarding our kit situation,” Olajire told BBC Sport.

“Despite receiving a notification letter from Adidas initially, we remain confident they could still reconsider their position.”

Adidas became the country’s supplier before the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, which Nigeria won, and at their maiden appearance at the World Cup in 1994.

Nigeria switched to rivals Nike later that year then reunited with Adidas in 2004.

Confusion Trails N14 Million Payment to Keshi By NSC

THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Tuesday denied it has agreed a new contract with Super Eagles’ Coach, Stephen Keshi, who was reported to have received two months’ salary worth N14 million from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Sources at the NSC disclosed that Keshi, who was on a monthly N5 million salary before the expiration of his contract in July, has been given a new deal valued at N7 million a month.

Tuesday, a source at the NFF, who pleaded anonymity, said it was preposterous to imagine that the Sports Minister, Tammy Danagogo, would enter into a fresh deal with Keshi without the knowledge of the Federation, who in the first place employed the coach.

According to the source, “we have agreed to extend Keshi’s contract and we are looking at several issues before finalizing the deal. So, I don’t know where the story that he has a new improved contract is coming from.

“In any case, the Sports Minister is a gentleman, who knows the right path to things like this, so, I don’t believe he has given Keshi a new contract to work for the NFF. The said N14 million could be payment for other services to the country and not as reward for the job he would do for us.

“To arrive at a new contract both parties must sit down to sort out some issues. You cannot tell me that the NFF will not be party to any discussion or agreement on the national team coach’s salary.”

A local website Tuesday reported that the sports minister has paid Keshi’s salary for the past two months.

It said that Keshi was paid N14 million (about $83,000) for October and November by Danagogo even though there is no contractual agreement between the coach and the NF

Keshi Is Responsible For AFCON Failure – Sunday Oliseh

Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has said Stephen Keshi should shoulder the blame for Nigeria’s failure to qualify for next year’s African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

Oliseh, writing in his blog, faulted Keshi’s constant line-up changes and failure to settle on his best 11 players, a situation he claimed made them not to play as a team.

”The uncoordinated way in which Super Eagles play, which triggered our recent elimination, is borne out of the fact that there were too much line-up changes.

“When you lack ‘raw’ quality in your team, you advocate and build success via team work, team play and a regular team to compensate for what you lack in individual quality,” Sl10.ng quoted Oliseh as saying in the blog.

He also lashed out at Keshi’s poor handling of his critics, saying not all those who criticise the out of contract Super Eagles coach are interested in his job.

“It is a crime to air your opinion, give advice or suggestions on how to better the Super Eagles without the handlers throwing insults at you or crying out that you seek their job,” he added.

“They probably do this because they got the job by back stabbing; hence they fail to understand that not everyone needs or wants to coach the Super Eagles.”

The outspoken Ex Juventus man, who is a licensed UEFA grade A coach, continued by saying Keshi and his technical crew lack the proper qualification requirements to lead a team like the Super Eagles, and that also means they were unable to achieve success in the long haul even though they won the AFCON in 2013.

“Most of us played football as kids, we all have an opinion or idea about football. This, however, leads some to think they are experts. This is not only wrong, but dangerous,” he continued.

“Should you want to be a top coach, you have to study and get yourself certified and even then you are not guaranteed success.

Stephen Keshi Sacked As Super Eagles Coach , Amodu To Replace Him As Interim Manager

The Big Boss has been relieved of his job in charge of the Super Eagles along with his coaching crew and has been replaced with Amodu Shaibu and a consortium of local coaches

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the sack of Stephen Keshi as coach of the Super Eagles early on Thursday morning.

He will be replaced, alongside his assistants Daniel Amokachi and Ike Shorunmu, by a consortium of local coaches led by former coach Amodu Shaibu who will handle the team’s remaining Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches until a substantive trainer is employed.

Keshi’s job had come under intense scrutiny since the start of the qualifiers in September when the team lost 3-2 to Congo at home before picking one point in a draw against South Africa in Cape Town.

A further defeat in Khartoum to Sudan made his tenure look like coming to an inglorious end after a fairy tale year where he led the Super Eagles to victory at the 2013 Afcon in South Africa.

The title defense in Morocco next year was looking bleak until Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Sudan in Abuja restored a glimmer of hope.

Keshi had also become embroiled in fights over players with Villareal striker Ikechukwu Uche being accused of wanting to be begged to play for the country. The player has denied all allegations.

However, the new NFF board was not convinced about his abilities and has now relieved him of the job, urging him and his assistants to proceed on any training programme of their choice that would be funded by the federation as a form of gratitude to the “national heroes”.

Their exit means that former national team coach, Shaibu, who has been a part of the NFF in a technical role, will now return to the position for the next tow matches against Congo and South Africa

Coach Under Pressure as Nigeria Stutter in Qualifying

Pressure is mounting on Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, with growing unhappiness about his handling of the team and as the African champions risk elimination from next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles, who won the competition in 2013, are currently bottom of Group A after a shock 1-0 defeat away to Sudan and just a single point from three games in the qualifiers.

Nigeria host Sudan, who are now third in the standings with three points, in a return fixture on Wednesday in the capital, Abuja.

Next month, they travel to second-placed Congo, who defeated them 3-2 in September, before the arrival of group leaders South Africa.

Nigeria have to win all three matches and hope other results go their way if they are to stand any chance of qualifying for the finals in Morocco in January.

Keshi, whose position has been the subject of repeated speculation, has apologised for the defeat to Sudan but at the same time claimed there was a conspiracy to ensure that he fails.

“There is a sabotage by some people. I won’t mention their names but they know themselves. They want to run this team down,” he claimed.

“Some people are ready to sell this country for a dime. They want to sabotage the Super Eagles.

“It’s a shame. They don’t want this team to get to the AFCON (Nations Cup), they want this team to lose outright. But they are not God.

“And this is not Keshi’s team. Keshi is a professional coach and after this (assignment), he will get another job elsewhere.”

– Boos and brickbats –

Nigeria fans awaiting the team’s return from Sudan at Abuja airport on Sunday roundly booed the players and question marks about Keshi’s future dominated the country’s media on Monday.

CAN Qualifiers; Sudan Moves Match Against Nigeria To Artificial Pitch

Officials have confirmed that Saturday’s African Nations Cup qualifying game between Sudan and Nigeria, will be played on the artificial turf of the Municipal Stadium in Khartoum.

“We have just been informed that the match will now be played on an artificial pitch and not natural one. That is why we are now training at the FIFA Goal Project,” africaFootball.com quoted Eagles’ co-ordinator, Emma Attah, as saying on Tuesday.

“It’s a late change, but we have to rise up to the challenge. We will play even on a concrete floor to win this match.”

According to Attah, the number of players in the Super Eagles camp in Abuja, has risen to 17, with the arrivals of Mikel Obi, Vincent Enyeama, Kenneth Omeruo, Emmanuel Emenike and Elderson Echeijile.

Stephen Keshi is understood to be clamouring for early departure to Sudan, to avoid fatigue among the players.

New Nigerian FA bosses Elected to End Leadership Tussle

Nigeria’s embattled football association on Tuesday elects a new president and executive committee, hoping to draw a line under a leadership struggle that took the country to the brink of a FIFA ban.

The 44-member congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) meets in the southern city of Warri to determine who will lead the organisation for the next four years.

Seven people are in contention for one of the toughest jobs in African football but Aminu Maiguri, whose time as NFF president has been controversial, has ruled himself out of the race.

Businessman Shehu Dikko, who helped arrange a tour by Manchester United in 2008 and has brokered several tie-ups with the English Premier League, is believed to be the front-runner. His main rivals are said to be Delta FC chairman Amaju Pinnick and former NFF general-secretary Taiwo Ogunjobi.

The new top table will also have to decide the future of national team manager Stephen Keshi, who has been the subject of speculation that he will quit or be replaced by a foreign coach.

Maigari was widely expected to win a second, four-year term on the back of the Super Eagles’ success in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and a fourth FIFA Under-17 World Cup win last year.

CHAN 2014: Who Can Make Eagles Call Up For Brazil 2014?

Eagles making their debut at the just concluded African Nations Championship in South Africa 201 since 2009, coming third in the competition despite doubts about Eagles performance before the competition, ODUKALE BOWALE takes a look at Eagles campaign in South Africa at the concluded African Nations Championship and possible players who can make Eagles’ list for World Cup Brazil 2014 in June.

The African Nations Championship is a relatively new event staged by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), having first been played in 2009; creation of the event was a response to the desire to strengthen national competitions regularly weakened by a mass exodus of top players who leave their home countries to play for foreign teams. It features only players who play their trade in the domestic leagues and features from all the six CAF zones on the continent.

Nigeria made her debut at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) edition in South Africa securing a third-place finish at the African tourney reserved for professional players in their country’s domestic leagues when they failed to qualify for the first two tournament finals in Cote d’Ivoire and Sudan. They were eliminated by arch-rivals Ghana for the inaugural competition in Cote d’Ivoire in 2009 and next-door neighbors Niger shocked them out for the next tournament staged by Sudan.

Eagles had to scrape past Cote d’Ivoire 4-3 on aggregate to make it to South Africa 2014 when they won the first game in Kaduna 4-1 courtesy of a brace from Sunday Mba and further goals from Gambo Mohammed and Ifeanyi Ede only to lose the return match 2-0 in Abidjan. In preparation for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa, series of friendly matches was in place for the Eagles where big boss finally made the 23 man list for the tournament.

Eagles started their African Championship campaign against the Les Aigles of Mali and lost 2-1 in their opening game in Cape Town, where the Eagles struggled in defence and did not create many goal scoring chances as  substitute Gbolahan Salami pulled a goal back for Nigeria, but for poor finishing, Mali had chances to kill off this game as pegged their opponents mainly in their own half of the pitch.

Having in mind the slim chances in qualifying for the next stage of the tournament, Eagles put up a much improved performance to scrape past Mambas of Mozambique 4 goals to 2. Mambas went in front but Nigeria restored uniformity when Enyimba striker Ifeanyi Ede stabbed home from inside the box after a nod-on from a long throwing following Kano Pillars playmaker Rabiu Ali putting Nigeria ahead, Mambas ripped open the Nigeria defence and allowed the stocky Diogo to round up Agbim and coolly slot home his second goal of the tournament in the 20th minute. Rabiu Ali again put Nigeria in front in the 54th minute, when and substitute Barnabas Imenger made the game safe.

Costly errors saw hosts South Africa go down 3-1 to Nigeria in their last African Nations Championship match and crash out of the tournament in spectacular fashion as Nigeria’s goals came from pint-sized winger Christantus Ejike (2) and an Ifeanyi Ede penalty.

Astounding Nigeria came back from three goals down to beat Atlas Lions of Morocco 4-3 to qualify for the semi-final of CHAN where Nigeria three goals were scored during the second half of the play, while the winning goal was scored during the extra time. It was indeed a surprise victory for not only Eagles but as a country as whole, as Nigerians and different sports pundits applauded the team including President Goodluck Jonathan as the “god of soccer” is commonly referred to as a Nigerian.

Keshi’s team reached the third playoff of the CHAN against all odds in spite of being seconds away from elimination in the hands of the impressive Moroccans before Ejike Uzoenyi’s cracking goal. After their sensational comeback against Morocco, it was a huge anti-climax that Nigeria will not be playing in CHAN final as Ghana made Nigeria pay through penalty, as they literally used their strength to muscle the Super Eagles out of the championship game. It was rather ironic that until recently Nigeria were known for their physical approach to the game and Ghana more for their flair as the local Black Stars were very defensive. Eagles killed off the game against South Africa and Mozambique with a display of ruthless finishing, but could not do same against their perennial rivals and resulted in a third playoff that they will now battle Zimbabwe, while Ghana had the bragging rights.

Super Eagles never gave up hope of taking third place of CHAN as Keshi motivated his boys to finish the tournament in style when they face Zimbabwe in the play-off.

While it’s the first time Nigeria plays in the CHAN tournament and are happy to get as far as this stage on their first attempt, Nigeria claimed the bronze medal after a hard-fought 1-0 win over the 10-men of Zimbabwe in Cape Town where Chinonso Obiozor playing his first match of the competition, looked a constant threat with his pace and power and having come close on a number of occasions, finally got his reward on 85 minutes in the third-place playoff in the final five minutes as the Super Eagles labored past their stubborn opponents.

However, looking at the performance of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the tournament, they showed that they were indeed slow starters; they have been responsible of turning out sleepy display in the opening minutes of their games against Mali and Mozambique in the group stage of the tournament as well as against Morocco in the quarter finals. The Eagles were not lucky in this regard against Malians which were Eagles first outing, but rallied back to beat the Mozambicans and the Moroccans 4-2 and 4-3 respectively.

Also, conceding early goals in the first few matches they played during the tournament for example against Mozambique, the Super Eagles conceded two goals in the space of 10 minutes; however, the game against Morocco was the height of a bad defending conceding three goals in the space of seven minutes before clawing back to win 4-3 in magnificent style to reach the semis.

In addition, poor communication at the defence, in three games against Mali, Mozambique and Morocco, Keshi’s team showed how not to defend. In the three games the defence was weak and allowed themselves to be overrun. Chigozie Agbim, who is also captain of the team, sure needs to take the lead in barking out instructions to the outfield players as that has been the trait of most top goalkeepers.

Nevertheless, there are positives for Nigeria to take from the jst concluded outing; coming third in her debut appearance was a thing of joy and also an avenue for the home based Eagles to prove themselves to make the list for World Cup in Brazil as big boss Keshi exposed that, about five players from the 2014 CHAN will be considered for places that excelled during the just concluded CHAN to the World Cup and has refused to mention name, but likely players includes Ejike Uzoenyi, Kunle Odunlami and Rabiu Ali, who were picked by CAF in the tournament XI.

CHAN Most Valuable Player Ejike Uzoenyi will be top of that list to make Eagles squad come June for the World Cup in Brazil. A tremendous display from the player after a return of three goals assists for his other team mates and three man of the match awards. Keshi singled out the Enugu Rangers left winger for special praise, Uzoenyi did well to be part of CHAN and it is believed that he has attracted some serious interests overseas as a result who will now be a viable option for the left side of the Eagles attack as Italy-based Nnamdi Oduamadi has struggled to convince lately in that position.

Also, Sunshine Stars FC central defender Odunlami Kunle who currently eyes World Cup played the whole six matches in CHAN displaying good marking skills, made the team of the tournament after a laudable display, touted to be Super Eagles Fabio Cannavaro in the making. He has shown he has the qualities to play at this level and seen by many to replace Godfrey Oboabona.

Kano Pillars midfielder Rabiu Ali, great passer, best player in Nigeria Premier league last season, brace against Mozambique, effective goal-scoring responsibilities, creativity and providing  inventive spark in the midfield stands  him out from the rest of the team can make him enough to contest with Sunday Mba for a place in the Eagles midfield.

Eagles Strikers Ifeanyi Ede and Gbolahan Salami made a considerable impact in the competition, Ede scored in the destruction of Mozambique and host country South Africa during the group stage matches  and formed of an enviable partnership with Uzoenyi while Salami blessed with blistering pace and good ball control, started his scoring campaign against Mali, though didn’t find the back of the net again as injury forced him out.

Defenders Benjamin Francis and Solomon Kwambe could also be considered as they have been part of the full international team even though they did not impress in South Africa. Francis had a disappointing tournament, still has a long way to go as a potential contender for Elderson Echiejile’s. Kwambe made a great impact, supported the attacking line-up with his overlapping runs and threatened opposing defenders. Kwambe recovery rate was thin as he failed to return to his primary role of position on time.

Agbim let himself down by some questionable goalkeeping at CHAN his show during the competition raised eyebrows over his eligibility to be Nigeria’s no 1 not only that, but as third choice to Vincent Enyeama and Austin Ejide in the main Super Eagles’ team, he will now have to fight to be the third goalkeeper to the World Cup in June.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must also look at the option of getting coaches from league clubs to handle the next team for the 2016 CHAN as most observers agreed that the best players in the Nigeria league were not in South Africa. These coaches, who will be answerable to the coach of the full international team, should be given part-time contracts and allowed to return to their clubs after national team duty. And preparations for CHAN 2016 in Rwanda must start in earnest.

Leadership: What Goodluck Jonathan can learn from Stephen Keshi – Ogunyemi Bukola

Keshi-JonathanSuccessful leadership, be it in business, politics or sports, operates on identical underlying principles. As such, successful leaders learn from one another across the different sectors of life and terrain of leadership in which they operate. Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, has a lot to learn about leadership, and he has plenty of options to choose from. But he needs not look far. In his mostly unremarkable government, the sports sector, especially football, especially the national male football team, Super Eagles, have enjoyed unprecedented success. This due in no small parts to the efforts of the Glo/CAF African Football Awards 2014 Coach of the Year, Stephen Keshi.

Since his appointment in 2011, Keshi has led Nigeria to qualification for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, which they went on to win, becoming one of only two people (along with Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary) to have won it as both a player and a coach, secured qualification to the 2014 World Cup and is through to the semi-final of CHAN2014. Keshi’s success has not been accidental, and in his handling of the team, some particularly stellar leadership attributes shine through that the man from Otuoke can learn from.

Leaders deliver results, not excuses: Jonathan has a readymade excuse for why nothing is working in Nigeria. From corruption to terrorism to poor state of infrastructure nationwide, none is due to Jonathan’s inability/failure to effect change. Past Nigerian leaders, the opposition, the children of anger, some aggrieved ethnicities, these are the groups responsible for everything that is wrong with Nigeria. And this has gone a long way in entrenching the culture of complacency in his largely incompetent team who know they are not to blame for failure. Keshi as Super Eagles manager has an opposite philosophy, get results and you won’t have to give excuses. And this has worked for him, as the team knows a bad pitch or weather and even biased officiating is not a reason to lose.

Leaders make sacrifices, especially big sacrifices: To save Nigeria, we must all be prepared to make sacrifices. On the part of Government, we are taking several measures aimed at cutting the size and cost of governance, including on-going and continuous effort to reduce the size of our recurrent expenditure and increase capital spending. In this regard, I have directed that overseas travels by all political office holders, including the President, should be reduced to the barest minimum” – Goodluck Jonathan (January 2012)

“Our administration believes that the cost of governance in the country is still too high and must be further reduced. We will also take additional steps to stem the tide of corruption and leakages. Foreign travel by government personnel will be further curtailed” – Goodluck Jonathan (January 2014)

In the two years between the two statements from Goodluck Jonathan above, he has spent over N3 billion on foreign trips, recurrent expenditure has increased to 72% of overall government spending, Aso Rock feeding and entertainment budget has stayed at N1 billion and Mr President is planning to acquire an 11th aircraft for the presidential fleet.

Keshi and his assistants on the other hand are being owed a total of 7 months’ salary and allowances running into about N78 million. In the face of this, he has ensured that no player is owed match bonuses and has not failed to deliver results on the pitch. Jonathan and his aides are living in obscene opulence while asking Nigerians to make sacrifices for the nation’s development. Errrrr, it all starts with you sir.

You are only as good as your team: Since his accidental ascendancy to the highest political office in Nigeria, Mr Jonathan has managed to assemble arguably the worst Federal Executive Council since return to democratic rule in 1999. Men and women of low competencies, questionable character and proven records of corruption/mismanagement have been given control of sensitive positions in return for political devotion. Mr Jonathan has shown that he values political loyalty above competency, and that is politics, not leadership. In this regard, he should learn how Keshi picks his team, making sure the best available players are selected, not those who spent more time with the press praising his managerial skills.

Leaders know what and when to celebrate: One of the most disappointing moments of Jonathan’s presidency for me was when he told CNN’s Christine Amanpour during an interview that power situation in Nigeria has vastly improved and Nigerians are happy with his administration in that regard. Amanpour went ahead to disprove this claim so effortlessly. In truth power generation had increased to more than 4000MW then, but that hardly calls for celebration and smugness considering that Nigeria needs about 20,000MW to stand any chance of being one of the top 20 economies in the world by 2020. Jonathan stops short of calling a party for every hundred MW added to the national grid or every kilometre of road patched. Mister, it’s like celebrating victory after winning the first free-kick in a football match. Keep calm and get to work, like Keshi does. Don’t pop the champagne until the trophy is in the cabinet.

Leaders know the people are priority: I do not understand the polimathics of FIFA rankings, and I got even more confused when in December 2013 Nigeria slipped three places from 33 to 36 despite having arguably the best year of all African teams. So was Keshi, but something struck me about his response:

“I am shocked (by the latest rankings). We won the Africa Cup of Nations this year, qualified for the World Cup and four-time world champions Italy held us to a draw, so I am surprised. We should continue to win and make Nigerians proud because that is what is most important to me and Nigerians. If we remain in wherever we are in the ranking and keep winning and Nigerians are happy, then I am happy.”

This contrasts sharply with the selective acceptance game Jonathan’s government plays with global governance and human development rankings. It is not unusual to see Mr Jonathan’s media aides base their principal’s successes on positive comments from international organizations like the World Bank and IMF. When however, the spotlight is on corruption and poverty, in which the report is almost always unfavourable, they swing to action and give a thousand and one reasons why such reports are inaccurate.

Failure to realize that democracy is a government of the people, and the most acceptable index is the people’s assessment, is the foundation of Mr Jonathan’s woeful performance as Nigeria’s president. And as long as he continues to seek acceptance from local power blocs and international organizations at the detriment of the wishes of the people, the story is not likely to change.

If Jonathan is to record any success worth remembering as he enters the final year of his presidency, he should learn from how Keshi has managed to turn around the fortunes of a Super Eagles team that failed to qualify for the nations cup into African champions. While Keshi has proven to be Nigeria’s most successful football coach, Mr Jonathan might just be the worst president in Nigeria’s modern democratic history. It’s all about leadership.

Like Super Eagles, Like Goodluck Jonathan By Ayodele Daniel

Few days ago, Nigeria played against Uruguay in the on-going Confederations Cup taking place in Brazil. Although the Super Eagles fell 1-2 to the Uruguayans, a random sample of opinions especially from my friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter suggests the Coach Stephen Keshi tutored lads did not disappoint. How so?

I did not watch the match. Matter of fact, I’ve stopped watching any game involving the senior national team for a very long time now. Maybe, who knows, I might yet again gather the courage to watch them play just as I salute the millions of Nigerians who have not lost faith in the Super Eagles.

But how did the same Nigerians who once labelled their favourite national team the ‘Super Ducks’, ‘Super Chickens’, etc. suddenly find them ‘Super Eagles’ once more? Did they just hate the coaches, players or were they just too blind to see the ‘achievements’ of the boys on the field of play? Were Nigerians sponsored to hate their own national team? Or did the opposition turn Nigerians against them just to spite the government of the day?

Here lies the true motive of why I’d to put hand to keyboard to type out my thoughts on the Nigerian situation.

The President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration is undoubtedly the most criticized and if I must add, the most misunderstood and mistrusted in Nigerian history. But was it like this from the beginning; the relationship between Nigerians and their President whom they massively voted for in the hope of enjoying a ‘breath of fresh air’? At what point did the relationship turn sour? When did it become one where the head became disconnected from the rest of the body and vice-versa?

I can’t simply place a time-line to it but I make bold to say that the day the present administration began to see every other voice of dissent to its much touted ‘Transformation Agenda’ as the ‘ramblings’ of a ‘disgruntled few’ or an outburst by the ‘collective children of anger,’ that is when it began to isolate itself from the realities on ground.

From my little understanding, contrary to what some might think, Nigerians are a very grateful people but with very short memory. Let me cite an example that touches on almost everyone.

When the Federal Government seemed to have improved (no matter how small) electricity generation and distribution (and don’t pretend like it wasn’t noticeable) in most parts of the country, Nigerians were excited and some even began to see some flicker of hope in the present administration but somewhere along the line (I think with the exit of Prof. Barth Nnaji) the modest effort was frittered and it seemed we descended to a worse state. Did Nigerians continue with their praise-singing? Did you?

We appreciate the little efforts even when we deserve more but why can’t the present administration see some genuineness in some of the criticisms it receives almost on a daily the same way it readily accepts the accolades?

The current dispensation has come to accept only praises but discards knocks, no matter how genuine. In fact, it has come to descend heavily on critics and only just recently set an examination for itself and scored itself ‘A’ in all areas. Who does that?

Obviously, our politicians still haven’t imbibed the spirit of sportsmanship in all their dealings with Nigerians. They are the players; we are the fans. But we are not their supporters’ club.

I digress. No matter how bad the Super Eagles are having it on the field of play, the main job of the Nigeria Supporters Club is to keep cheering them on from the beginning of the blast of the referee’s whistle to the end. The sounds of the trumpets, drums, roars, songs will not ebb. That’s because it is their job. It’s the reason why they registered to join the supporters’ club; to sink or swim with the Eagles. But the fans at home, even some in the stadium don’t agree. Their loyalty is fickle. The Super Eagles have on several occasions been jeered by their home fans for a poor display. Did that make them bad fans? No! It’s just a wake-up call.

When the majority of Nigerians who seemed to be in love with Mr. Jonathan and his style of leadership at first suddenly turned cold and scathing of his policies, his style and person, it did not mean that their hearts were poisoned towards him. It only meant he wasn’t living up to their expectations.

A sensible and God-fearing leader would have retraced his steps and find a way to cement his relationship with the people who stood by him and gave him their mandate, but what did President Jonathan do? He isolated himself the more from the people by surrounding himself with bootlickers and persons of questionable characters whose only interests remain their pockets. And as if that wasn’t enough, the President destroyed whatever remained of that relationship/goodwill by not giving a damn!

Had the Super Eagles not given a damn, carried on as if all was well when it wasn’t, they wouldn’t have found themselves in the good books of majority of Nigerians who now stay up late to watch them play and pray for their victory. That’s the Nigerian spirit; one that recognizes success from a mile off and embraces it while distancing itself from failure immediately it begins to surface.

The present administration will do well to go back to the drawing board as they’ve always done but to the Nigerian people, they must ask their forgiveness for taking them for granted. Yes, they think us fools! We’re the only ones who cannot see the ‘giant’ strides being made in every sector of the economy. In fact, some even say the present administration has exceeded its promise to Nigerians and I ask, in what way?

The present administration must sit-up and set mind to task. They’ve relaxed for too long basking in the infamy of failure and quoting fanciful figures and reports that seem taken from another world not the one we live in where unemployment, poverty, insecurity, corruption, disunity and other evils have probably being the highest of all time.

It won’t be easy, Nigerians will remain sceptical, but I daresay that when the present administration truly begins to make the welfare of the generality of Nigerians its focal point and stop engaging in self-glorification, it will once more begin to enjoy the support of all and sundry in ways unimaginable.

The Super Eagles are a testament to that part of the Nigerian spirit that wipes the slate clean to begin a fresh start.
