Military Court Jails Nigerian Soldier For Stealing Bullets

A military general court martial in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Tuesday sentenced a soldier to 18 months in prison for unauthorised possession of live ammunitions outside his assigned duty post.

The court also ruled that three officers would not be promoted for periods ranging from 18 months to two years. The officers were found guilty of professional misconduct in the frontline.

The court martial, headed by Olusegun Adeniyi, a Brigadier General, tried Private Mcdonald Chukwu on a two-count charge after he was caught at a bus station with 89 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunitions inside his travelling bag.

He was arrested by a female police sergeant, Sarah Peters, who frisked his bag as he was about to board a commercial bus in Maiduguri.

Mr. Chukwu, in an earlier statement, admitted being in possession of the ammunitions, but said he forgot them in his bag when he returned from his duty post, as he hurried to get money from an ATM machine to travel.

He later disowned the statement, saying the ammunitions were not found in his bag.

An Army Major, Usman Inyam, was made to forfeit 18 months of his seniority status, for professional misconduct that involved his abandoning duty post in such a manner that may have endangered the lives of troops in the frontline.

His lone charge indicated that as a commanding officer in charge of infantry troops in Takumbare area of Gwoza local government, Mr. Inyam abandoned a post usually frequently used by Boko Haram insurgents when under attack by soldiers.

Police Arrests Woman For Stealing A Month Old Baby

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 30-year old woman, Peace Chukwuemeka, for stealing a month-old baby from her mother.

It was alleged that Chukwuemeka drugged the mother of the baby before stealing the child.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Murtala Mani, said this while speaking with journalists on the activities of the command in Uyo on Tuesday.

Mani, who spoke through the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Cordelia Nwawe, stated that the suspect lived in the same compound with the mother of the baby at Mbak Itam in Itu Local Government Area.

He added that the family unit of the command, acting on intelligence, rescued the baby and handed it over to the mother.

“Let us say clearly that in the month of November, the Acid Section through the Family Unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom was able to record a great feat by bringing back a one-month-and-some-few-days-old baby to her mother in Akwa Ibom.

“The suspected woman, who has been married for some years without giving birth to a baby, left Lagos State for Uyo, stayed in a compound in Mbak Itam with the intention to steal a baby from her neighbour.

“The Family Unit of the command, through intelligence report, was able to rescue the baby,” Mani said.

Mani added that the police also rescued a four-year-old boy from a young man, who snatched him from his mother at gun point.

Confessing to the crime, Peace Chukwuemeka, said she had married for 10 years without giving birth to a child and had been desperate to have a baby.

She, however, denied drugging the mother of the baby.

“I did not give anything to the mother; it was a coincidence that she was asleep and seized that opportunity to take the baby.

“I have been married for 10 years now, so I need a baby of my own. I took the baby to my mother in the village but she refused to collect her from me. I came back to Akwa Ibom and the mother of the baby started asking me of her baby and I was arrested,” Chukwuemeka confessed.

Plagiarism does less national harm than corruption and stealing – Adegbenga

Plagiarism is the “wrongful appropriation” and “stealing and publication” of another author’s “language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions” and the representation of them as one’s own original work. The idea remains problematic with unclear definitions and unclear rules.

PLAGIARISM IS NOT IN ITSELF A CRIME, but can constitute copyright infringement. In academia and industry, it is a serious ethical offense. Plagiarism and copyright infringement overlap to a considerable extent, but they are not equivalent concepts, and many types of plagiarism do not constitute copyright infringement, which is defined by copyright law and may be adjudicated by courts. PLAGIARISM IS NOT DEFINED OR PUNISHED BY LAW, but rather by institutions (including professional associations, educational institutions, and commercial entities, such as publishing companies).

Although plagiarism in some contexts is considered theft or stealing, THE CONCEPT DOES NOT EXIST IN A LEGAL SENSE, although the use of someone else’s work in order to gain academic credit may meet some legal definitions of fraud. “PLAGIARISM” SPECIFICALLY IS NOT MENTIONED IN ANY CURRENT STATUTE, EITHER CRIMINAL OR CIVIL. Some cases may be treated as unfair competition or a violation of the doctrine of moral rights. The increased availability of intellectual property due to a rise in technology has furthered the debate as to whether copyright offences are criminal. In short, people are asked to use the guideline, “if you did not write it yourself, you must give credit”.

PLAGIARISM IS NOT THE SAME AS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. While both terms may apply to a particular act, THEY ARE DIFFERENT CONCEPTS, and false claims of authorship may constitute plagiarism regardless of whether the material is protected by copyright. Copyright infringement is a violation of the rights of a copyright holder, when material whose use is restricted by copyright is used without consent. Plagiarism, in contrast, is concerned with the unearned increment to the plagiarizing author’s reputation, or the obtaining of academic credit, that is achieved through false claims of authorship. Thus, plagiarism is considered a moral offense against the plagiarist’s audience. _(__Wikipedia__)_

I was surprised when the media was eroded with headlines such as “Change Begins with Me Campaign Suffered A Setback” due to Plagiarism.

Speeches of men that changed the face of the World need no reference when being used. Obama fall within this group by virtue of being the only Blackman to have presided over the affairs of United States.

You need no reference when quoting people like Aristotle, Zeus, Socrates e.t.c. The World already knows their speeches are free for all.

It took President Buhari’s Speech Writer’s ignorance to admit guilt on this. Most proverbs being used freely today belong to the Chinese; most people don’t even know and still use them like it’s theirs.

I am very sure that Barak Obama has quoted speeches from Shakespeare, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln e.t.c which his Speech Writer must have written them without citing them; yet Americans has not called for the head of Obama the ways Nigerians are calling for the head of President Buhari.
Though not acceptable by any Standard, plagiarism does less National harm than corruption and stealing which has faced the country under the past administration.

It will be recalled that President Buhari on September 8 launched the ‘reorientation’ campaign in Abuja as part of his government’s strategy to make Nigerians eschew “dishonesty, indolence, unbridled corruption and widespread impunity” and embrace daily introspection over their “immoral” conducts, so I am not surprised at the condemnation; using Plagiarism as an excuse.

I am also aware that some corrupt elements that are not comfortable with the ‘Change Begins with Me’ Campaign had used one Akin Fadeyi, creator of ‘Not In My Country’ to accused the Buhari administration of stealing his concept.

The corrupt elements claimed that Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed adapt Mr. Fadeyi’s ‘Not In My Country,’ for ‘Change Begins with Me’ campaign but Lai Mohammed has denied the allegations, saying he started ‘Change Begins with Me’ before he was appointed Minister by the Buhari’s administration.

I know that the ‘Change Begins with Me’ campaign had earned President Buhari denigration from those who are used to corrupt practices but the Federal Government must make the campaign necessary so as to rally all Nigerians to clean the country of corruption and other discontent tormenting it.
Just like President Buhari has urged Nigerians to look beyond this incident and focus on the message of change which the country needs in order to restore our cherished value systems, I stand with President Buhari on the objectives of the ‘Change Begins with Me’.

God bless Nigeria.

Presidency Orders VC, Registrar Of The Fed University Of Otuoke To Refund Overpaid Salaries

The Presidency, through the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, has instructed the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, to refund overpayment of salaries running into millions of naira.
The Registrar of the university, David Suowari, was also directed to refund the sum of N130, 692.71 per month in excess of his due salary.
The overpayments were said to have been discovered during the commission’s visit to the institution on May 12, 2015 to carry out an inspection of FUO’s remuneration practices vis-a-vis the extant government’s pay policy.
The VC and the registrar were accused of appropriating certain allowances to themselves which were not approved by the government.

These concerns were raised in a letter from the NSIWC to Aluko, signed for the Chairman of the Commission by the Director of Compensation, Chike Ogbechie.
The commission said,

“The findings of the inspection in respect of your institution (Federal University, Otuoke) were as follow:

“The Vice-Chancellor was being paid total emoluments of N1,970,476.76 monthly, whereas he should not earn more than N922,810.23 if he were paid furniture allowance en bloc earlier, or N1,043,176.79 if he were being paid furniture allowance.

“Much of the difference was attributed to certain allowances which were not approved by the government.”

In the case of the registrar, the commission said he was being paid N130,692.71 in excess of his due salary of N502,580.25.
The commission also said the university disaggregated its staff salaries against the government’s policy of pay consolidation.
The NSIWC, therefore, directed the university to stop “the wrongful practices” and comply with relevant rules and rates.
The commission added,

“We hereby direct the vice-chancellor and the registrar to refund the cumulative overpayments made to them.

“You are to report to the commission in writing, your compliance with this directive within four weeks of this letter.”

Prof. Mobolaji Aluko became the Vice-Chancellor of the university in February 2011 and he said (in a text message to our Punch correspondent) that there was neither disaggregation of salaries nor overpayment of salaries.
The vice-chancellor said,

“Rather, pension and health insurance allowances were due to three of us, Diaspora Vice-Chancellors who are on Sabbatical from our foreign universities, and co-paid monthly in naira to us for payment to those foreign universities.

“Without that concession occurring, our own local salaries would have been wiped out completely, and we could not have accepted the job.”

“However, the need for accountability is welcome, and Salaries and Wages Commission will be fully reconciled to the full facts,” the VC stated.

Ex-Police IG, Okiro, Denies Stealing N275m; Says Aide Set Him Up

The Chairman, Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, on Monday reacted to the allegation that he defrauded the commission of N275 million and vowed not to succumb to blackmail.

Mr. Okiri alleged that a staff of the commission, Aaron Kaase, of the Press Unit, colluded with a journalist to blackmail him with the allegation to collect N10 million.

The chairman, who spoke at a news conference in Abuja, said the commission received N350 million from the Federal Government to train its staff to monitor the conduct of police officers involved in the 2015 general elections.

Mr. Okiro had appeared before the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences on June 4, following a petition by Kaase that he embezzled N275 million belonging to the commission.

“I still believe that a clear conscience fears no accusation and I will not yield to blackmail no matter how long it takes to clear my name.

“I have nothing to fear,” he said.

According to Mr. Okiro, the commission received N350 million for election monitoring/conferences/training of the staff of the commission and deployed them to states to monitor police conduct during the general elections of 2015.

#GhenGhen: Jennifer Aniston Planning to “Fight” Angelina Jolie For Stealing Brad Pitt

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt broke up nearly a decade ago, but apparently the actress still has some ill will for the woman who came between them.

Pitt left Aniston for actress Angelina Jolie back in 2005, and since then Brad and Angelina have started a family, while Jen has bounced from relationship to relationship. Jennifer and Angelina have mostly avoided each other in the years since then, but they appear to be headed for a showdown in just a matter of weeks.

Many believe Aniston will get a Golden Globe nomination for her work in Cake, while both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are expected to get nominations as well (Angelina for Unbroken and Brad for Fury).

Sources tell InTouch Weekly that Jennifer Aniston is planning to confront Angelina at the award festivities. The source said that Jen plans to “look her straight in the eye and tell her how she really feels.”

The latest animosity reportedly stems from an interview Brad did with comedian Zach Galifianakis in which he appeared to mock his marriage to Jennifer Aniston.

But the confrontation has been a long time coming, the source added.

“She is nervous to the point of being sick over the prospect of coming face-to-face with Brad and Angie,” the source said. “But she has waited a decade for this.”

While Jennifer Aniston is planning a long-awaited confrontation with Angelina Jolie, she also has her own relationship problems to deal with. Several media outlets have reported trouble between Jen and fiance Justin Theroux, including rumors that they may not get married at all.

Several times, rumors have indicated that Aniston and Theroux were breaking off their engagement, including a recent report that Jen caught him flirting with other women.

“There are bound to be rumors about their engagement, when they spend so much time apart,” a British magazine quoted a source close to the couple. “Justin’s been caught out referring to Jen as his ‘girlfriend’ or ‘partner’ rather than his fiancée, which has led some in their circles to wonder whether a wedding will ever materialize.”

If Jennifer Aniston does plan to confront Angelina Jolie, she has some time to plan her attack. The Golden Globe awards are still close to two months away.
