Southern Kaduna: Nigerian Army denies killing 17 herdsmen

Nigerian Army has refuted social media reports on the alleged killing of 17 herdsmen by soldiers in southern Kaduna.

Kingsley Umoh, deputy director, army public relations of 1 division, dismissed the report as unfounded and irresponsible.

In a statement, he said that the mandate of the army in the area was to restore peace and ensure mutual coexistence among the people, and warned those spreading the false reports to desist.

He said that personnel deployed to the area have developed robust relationship with traditional rulers, community leaders, the Miyetti Allah and other stakeholders.

“We appeal to citizens, community leaders and other stakeholders to always speak and act in the interest of peace,” he said.

“It serves no useful purposes to continue to fabricate stories about the already delicate security situation in southern Kaduna.”

Umoh said that the army remained committed to the return of peace to the entire area.

According to him, soldiers deployed to the area have been conducting cordon and search operations and have tracked down suspects believed to be involved in some recent security breaches in the area.

“In total, two miscreants were killed and two are in custody in Southern Kaduna within the period of March 19 to March 22 , 2017.”

The spokesperson said troops have also maintained day and night patrols along Gidan Waya-Jagindi-Asso road and environs.

Osinbajo preaches at Pentecostal event; speaks on religious crisis, Southern Kaduna

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday urged Nigerians to embrace love, saying “the seed of hate is the device of the devil.”

He made the call at the Biannual Conference of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Benin as he preached forgiveness.

The acting president, who went down memory lane on religious crisis dating back to 1979 with the Maitasine crisis in Borno that left many dead, urged Christians to live in peace with one another.

He also urged Christians to embrace love, noting that “hate is the device of the devil likely to hinder prosperity of the Christendom.”

According to him, hate is man’s greatest enemy, recalling that the country witnessed brutal killings of men and women in the past few years.

He added that “the history of blood and religious conflict extends every Nigerian government.”

Mr. Osinbajo, therefore, urged Christians not to be despised by others, saying “it is the burden of the Gospel.”

On the Southern Kaduna killings, he said “investigations are ongoing; I can’t make any categorical statement.

“The Federal Government has taken steps by first aligning with the state government, and it is working with the police to be the first respondents.

“It is not true to say that Federal Government is silent about the killings: it is not true.

“Troops were sent in after a security council briefing was received from the state and police, after they found themselves not being able to curtail the killings.

“Every Nigerian leader, whether Christian or Muslim, tried to solve the problem of religious crisis and none succeeded.

“In many respect, the failure of our criminal justice system to punish culprits has not helped matters.

“Meanwhile, suicide bombers and those ready to die with their victims keep adding more satanic dimension to the public.

“Why is it that no government has succeeded in stopping these age-long killings?,” he asked.

He explained that everything about the gospel contradicted the flesh, saying as far as the gospel was concerned, the way to live and be fruitful was to die.

He urged Christians to love and forgive their enemies, irrespective of the harm done to them.

Northern Christian youths commend Buratai, El-Rufai on peace initiative.

The Northern Christian Youths Assembly has commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, for laying the foundation of building a military barracks in Kafanchan in Southern Kaduna, which according to them will help reduce the crisis between herdsmen and the communities.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Assembly, Peter Bawa, also commended the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai for the peace initiative he brought about to end the Southern Kaduna crisis.

According to him “the Northern Christian Youth Assembly is pleased to commend the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai for laying the foundation for the building of a military barracks in Kafanchan in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State in a development that we know would go a long way to curtail the menace of marauding killers that have plunged too many communities in the area into mourning.

We see the building of a military formation in the area as a way of shortening troops’ deployment time and ensuring that troublemakers within that vicinity shorteniare given a hot chase and no longer have anywhere to torment the peace of the people.

“For us, General Buratai’s prompt implementation of the barracks project as approved by the President and Commander in Chief is a demonstration of the administration’s sincere commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property of all citizens irrespective of political or religious leanings.

“While we remain confident in the ability of the Nigerian Army, which is one of the best in the world to bring perpetrators of all the deadly attacks around that vicinity to justice within the shortest period of time, the subsequent completion of the barracks would further boost the confidence of the people in the neighbourhood in the military of their country.

“Those politicising and attempting to give the Southern Kaduna crisis a religious coloration would do well to now hold their fire and allow the mechanisms for peaceful resolution put in place by the state governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, to yield fruits for the overall benefit of the Nigerian state.

Speaking further, Bawa said “we commend Governor el-Rufai for these initiatives even as we appeal to him not to be discouraged by seeming misunderstanding of his good intentions for the people of Kaduna State.”

He urged the Nigerian Army not to hesitate in arresting and investigating anyone linked to arming any side of the conflict irrespective of their status in the society or religious affiliation.

“In addition, we appeal to the Federal Government not to allow anyone fished out as being culpable in the attacks to escape justice irrespective of what roles they had played or are playing in the government.

“Nigerians would like to hear the last of these senseless killings so that citizens, especially those engaged in agriculture, can go back to earning their livelihood while making valuable contributions to the economy at this time when the country is pursuing diversification,” he added.

Commenting on this, Peter Bawa, coordinator of the group, said security personnel deployed to the barracks will give “marauding killers a hot chase”.

“Laying the foundation for the building of a military barracks in Kafanchan is a development that we know would go a long way to curtail the menace of maurading killers that have plunged too many communities in the area into mourning,” Bawa said in a statement.

“We see the building of a military formation in the area as a way of shortening troops’ deployment time and ensuring that troublemakers within that vicinity are given a hot chase and no longer have anywhere to torment the peace of the people.

“The prompt implementation of the barracks project is a demonstration of the administration’s sincere commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property of all citizens irrespective of political or religious leanings.

“It has gone a long way to again show that we truly have responsible and decisive leadership that is willing and able to confront any emerging evil to ensure Nigerians can live in peace to enjoy their own country.

“While we remain confident in the ability of the Nigerian Army which is one of the best in the world to bring perpetrators of all the deadly attacks around that vicinity to justice within the shortest period of time, the subsequent completion of the barracks would further boost the confidence of the people in the neighborhood in the military of their country.”

Governor El-Rufai vows to prosecute those behind the pogrom in southern Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has vowed to prosecute those behind the pogrom in southern Kaduna, just as he exonerated himself of any complicity, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The governor, who spoke while receiving the Kabiru Gaya-led Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Southern Kaduna yesterday at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, described his accusers as mischievous. He noted that no patriotic chief executive would allow his state to be on fire.

He regretted that the impasse was prolonged by the non-prosecution of the sponsors over the years.

His words: The reasons the southern Kaduna crisis has continued unabated is because those involved have neither been punished nor prosecuted in the 35 last years.”

The governor charge the committee “to see the reality of what is happening in southern Kaduna as against the fiction,” advising it not to believe anyone “based on his credibility or apparent credibility,” including the statement credited to the Catholic Church in Kafanchan, which he described as “totally false.”

He further told the panel that there were several “irresponsible comments on the crisis by people who should know better.”

According to him, even the figures released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the impasse were those of six local councils and involved trapped Christians, Muslims and traditionalists.”

El-Rufai also accused some traditional and community rulers in the area of perpetuating the crisis for selfish ends, pledging to prosecute them.

Gaya had told the governor that their target was to investigate and find a lasting solution to the crisis.

“Our mission is to interact, discuss with government, stakeholders, community leaders, security agencies on the remote causes of the continuous crisis in the southern part of the state,” he stated.

Also yesterday, the founder of Resurrection Praise Ministry Worldwide, Archbishop Samson Benjamin, sought restraint in order not to overheat the polity following the spate of killings in parts of the country.

The cleric, who gave the charge during an audience with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, in Abuja, appealed for peace. He commended the police and other security agencies for being alive to their duties.

Meanwhile, Delta State Commissioner of Police, Zanna Ibrahim, has warned residents against resorting to jungle justice in the face of slightest provocation.

Giving the warning against the backdrop of the recent killing of herdsmen by some youths in parts of the state, noted that the lawless exercise was uncivilised, criminal and anti-justice, peace and security.

He cautioned the nomads against provocatively grazing their cattle on people’s farmlands.

Southern Kaduna: FG To Provide Two Military Battalions to quell violence

The Senior Special Adviser, (Media and Publicity) to the President, Garba Shehu says solution is on the way as the President has ordered the establishment of two military units to provide security in southern Kaduna.

This is coming as most residents in the region, are now afraid to return to their homes, following the killings in the state.

Mr Shehu gave the assurance while speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show, Sunrise Daily.

“Government has intensified a lot of activities. As we speak, there are ongoing efforts to establish two military battalions. One in kachia, one in Zango-kataf.”

Furthermore, he hinted that military had begun surveillance, while “the mobile police quadrant had been put in place – the entire place is drenched with a lot of security, so many police.

He then stated that “It would be assumptious to think that these things would just go away with the wave of a hand.

“Some rascally elements would still stray and perpetuate crime, but I think that the measures put in by the government are having effect.”

The President’s aide then urged citizens to also help in the fight against criminals and insecurity as the government alone cannot solve all the problems.

“We often make mistakes, leaving matters of security to the police and to the army, but there are enormous responsibilities that lie on all of us in our various communities.”

Journalists Write Buhari On Southern Kaduna, Call For Stakeholders Conference.

Journalists for Democratic Rights (JODER), a leading Nigerian media rights group, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to launch an intensive campaign aimed at mopping up arms in the hands of non-state actors across the country, especially in the Northern states. This is necessary to stem the tide of violence that threatens the country’s stability, the media group stated.

JODER also urged the President to create time to visit Southern Kaduna, saying such a step will boost the dwindling trust of the feuding parties in his government.

JODER called on President Buhari to impress on Northern leaders for an all embracing ethnic and religious conference to deal with the festering crisis in the region.

JODER whose officials recently paid visits to flashpoints in the North warned that the on-going blood-letting in Southern Kaduna has the potential of throwing the entire country into a faith and ethnic induced mayhem.

The warming was contained in a letter addressed to President Buhari and signed by the group’s Executive Director, Mr Adewale Adeoye. The media group regretted that  the social media space is awashed with propaganda material on the Kaduna crisis capable of instigating spontaneous uprising in Africa’s most populous country. No fewer that 1,000 people may have been killed in the past few months that the crisis began.

JODER said the crisis in Kaduna state has led to an ‘arms rival’ and a ‘spiral rise’ in the competition by contenting parties to procure arms and ammunition in anticipation of current or future conflict. This comes in the absence of public trust in the mediation strategies of the authorities concerned. The group said its next conference billed for Kaduna will focus on the Southern Kaduna crisis.

JODER stated that access to arms and ammunition is a major inducement to the growing conflict in some Nigerian communities. With the crisis in the Magreb region, coupled with the increase in poverty and the rise of faith fundamentalism,   arms have become easier to access. We also observe the employment of mercenaries by contending parties in the prosecution of the conflict in Kaduna state. JODER described the Southern Kaduna crisis as a “festering old wound.”

One major solution is for the government to embark on a massive campaign to mop up arms in the hands of non-state actors, this should be backed by amnesty for those who hand over their arms in the first three weeks.

The government should follow this task by encouraging people to hand over their illegally procured arms with barter for amnesty.

JODER stated in the letter “The Southern Kaduna crisis is just a metaphor for more crisis that may occur in the nearest future. The moral authority of the mediating parties is very weak. There is deep suspicion by all the parties that the government sponsored mediators will not be able to resolve the deep-seated problems. The most frightening aspect is the international dimension to the crisis. A party in the dispute has succeeded in luring foreign interests whose primary motive is the continuation of the crisis instead of assisting in looking for a peaceful solution.

JODER said it is obvious that the political authorities in Kaduna state do not enjoy the trust and confidence of the disputants in the conflict which necessitates the need for a third party to intervene.

“The best that should happen is for all the state governors irrespective of political or religious affiliation, Christian and Muslim groups, civil society across the country to initiate a peace process that will bring together all the parties concerned for a peaceful resolution of the lingering feud. If this is not done on time, the possibility of chain solidarity reactions in Kaduna and outside Kaduna state is almost imminent.

JODER said the Kaduna unrest mirror the faultlines of Nigerian federalism, adding that the ruling party should be bold enough to restructure the country in a way that guarantees self actualization.

“Nigeria is a plural society. For lasting peace, there must be justice. Every religion and culture should realize the need to coexist without one imposing its values on the other. Nigeria is facing a huge dilemma in the context of the national question which has for long remained unresolved.  This is compounded by corruption, ineptitude and the country’s economic meltdown which continue to fuel hunger, anger and desperation in young and hopeless people.”

JODER urged President Buhari and the ruling party to put together a Working Group of Experts drawn from ethnic, labour, religious groups from across the country and from the International Community to examine the reports of the past National Conferences, including the Henry Willink Commission of Inquiry of 1959. If the government is courageous enough to do this, peace is certain to return and threats to peaceful communities may likely subside.

Kaduna crisis: You’ll be shocked by calibre of people we’ll arrest, says el-Rufai

Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, says people will be shocked by the calibre of “perpetrators” his government will arrest and prosecute for the violence in Southern Kaduna.

Speaking on Tuesday when he received Abubakar Mahmoud, president of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the governor said previous governments had failed to prosecute anyone for crises in Kaduna.

El-Rufai said about 20,000 people had lost their lives to crises in the state since 1980 while noting that his administration is determined to put an end to violence.

“Since 1980, about 10,000 to 20,000 were killed in Kaduna State during crisis and government did not prosecute anybody. We are determined to end the killings in Kaduna,” the governor said.

“Henceforth, the law will fully apply without fear or favour. We have made some arrests and you will be shocked to see the calibre of perpetrators that we are going to arrest and prosecute.

“No matter highly [placed] the person is we will bring him or her to face the full wrath of the law to serve as deterrent to others whom may want to sponsor crisis. Some of the things you are hearing are not true. Some people have made up their minds to spread hatred and falsehood especially in the media.”

The state government had declared a 24-hour curfew in three local governments in a bid to curb the persistent killings in the areas.

The curfew has been relaxed to 12 hours in Zangon-Kataf and Jema’a while the 24-hour curfew is still in force in Kaura.

Soyinka knocks Buhari, El-Rufai’s “lethargic” handling of southern Kaduna crisis

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka yesterday criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s and Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s handling of the southern Kaduna crisis. “If you ask why Gen. Buhari did not act fast enough when these events took place, which degrade us as human beings, it was perhaps he had been waiting for the governor of that state to send money to the killers first for them to stop the killing,” Soyinka said.

This was the first time that Soyinka who supported Buhari’s bid for the presidency last year would openly criticise him. This shows how the president’s handling of the crisis over which he did not comment for a long time despite the carnage is alienating him from his support base.

Soyinka said at the launch of a book, Religion and the Making of Nigeria in Abuja yesterday that he was not astonished by the admission of El-Rufai that he paid out money to foreigners to stop the carnage on Nigerian soil.

“There was nothing new about it. Has appeasement to religious forces not become a Nigerian face of justice and equity? First lethargy and then appeasement. Was Boko Haram’s Muhammed Yusuf not a beneficiary of appeasement in a similar fashion?

“What, however, concerns the rest of us, no matter the internal wrangling, rivalries or controversies within any religion, is that the innocent are often those who pay the highest price. The non-adherents to one line of belief or another,” Soyinka said.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who was also at the launch lamented the hypocrisy displayed by Nigerians on the issue of federal character, wondering why cases related to religious violence were not brought to a logical conclusion.

His words: “Very few people have been prosecuted for religious violence but none has ever been brought to conclusion. Why is it that such cases are never concluded? Too many cases of high-profile murders that are not concluded in this country.

“National character is very hypocritical. When we are playing football, we all clamour for the best legs because we want to win. We don’t ask how many Muslims or Christians are on the team. When you are sick, nobody asks the religion of the doctor, we only ask about competencies.”

Meanwhile,? Buhari yesterday met with security chiefs over the prevailing insecurity in southern Kaduna, the Niger Delta and other parts of the country. At the meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Dan-Ali, disclosed that troops had been moved to southern Kaduna while negotiations were ongoing to end the killings in the area.

The military also said it had concluded an arrangement to launch an operation as part of measures to completely restore peace in the wake of the insecurity in the area. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, who gave the indication at the end of the security meeting, yesterday disclosed that the exercise would also cover some parts of Plateau and Kano states. He said the operation was akin to the other military endeavours in the Niger Delta, among others.

It was alleged that no fewer than three persons were feared killed in the incident leading to the heavy presence of security operatives around the community.
Eyewitness told The Guardian that the problem started on Tuesday night when a Hausa scrap dealer carrying a generator in a wheelbarrow was accosted around the Udo Udoma area of Itiam Etoi by some local residents.

“They asked him for settlement , and when he refused to pay, the youths resorted to confronting him. The minor misunderstanding led to a brawl and forced a reprisal attack from the Hausa/Fulani settlers in the area,” he said .The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Cordelia Nwawe, confirmed that there was a crisis but denied that there were casualties.

Finally, Army to launch special offensive to end southern Kaduna killings

Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, says the military will commence a special operation in the southern part of Kaduna to end the persistent killings.

Fulani herdsmen have been accused of carrying out killings in southern Kaduna, which led to the declaring of a 24-hour curfew in three local governments areas of the state.

The curfew has since been relaxed by 12 hours in Zangon-Kataf and Kaura, but Jema’a’s is still in full force.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday at the state house after a five-hour meeting with security chiefs and President Muhammadu Buhari, Buratai said the operation would cover parts of Plateau and Kano states.

He said that the military operation — operation Lafiya Dole — would continue in the Sambisa Forest where troops ?recently flushed out remnants of Boko Haram insurgents.

“Our troops are already in southern Kaduna. We have our special forces operating there along with all other security agencies and we intend also to have an exercise very soon in Southern Kaduna to cover some parts of Plateau and parts of Kano states.,” he said.

?”So, it is part of our strategy for this year to continue all the exercises we have had before. We will be having ‘Exercise Kunama 2?, which will come to Southern Kaduna state and parts of Plateau and Kano states.

“Crocodile smile in the Niger Delta and indeed the ‘Python Dance’ [will continue], but we are going to rename the ‘Python Dance’ for the South East? this year also.”?
?
Also speaking with journalists, Mansur Dan Ali, minister of defence, said they were “able to come to conclusion on almost all the crises that are going on across the country.”

“The southern Kaduna, the Niger Delta issues and other major crisis areas were discussed and resolutions were passed,” Ali said.

“In southern Kaduna, we have our troops being moved and ?they have already taken places, operations are going on and I believe that very soon it will come to an end.”

The meeting was also attended by Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police (IGP), Lawan Daura; director-general of the department of state service (DSS) amongst others.

Senate To Investigate Southern Kaduna Killings, Says Saraki.

Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki on Tuesday pledged that the Nigerian Senate, upon resumption, will look into the crises that have led to the wanton loss of lives and property in the Southern part of Kaduna State, in recent times.

The Senate President made this known while responding to the cry of a concerned Nigerian on Twitter on Monday, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on New Media, Bamikole Omishore, in Abuja.

A twitter user, Chimeze Okoro Ukoha had tweeted: “@Bukolasaraki About 800 Christians massacred in Kaduna and nobody is talking about that. VERY BAD,” the concerned Nigerian told Saraki.

In his response, Saraki said: “Once @NGRSenate resumes, this issue will be addressed to get a clearer picture of what the real situation is and find a lasting solution.”

Saraki went further by also tweeting: “Every Nigerian life matters, and @NGRSenate will work to ensure that rule of law is always upheld as prescribed by Nigerian Constitution.”

The killings in Southern Kaduna have continued to generate reactions from various quarters, especially among the masses.

Many have questioned why the killings have continued despite the security measures put in place by the Kaduna State Government. A lot of Nigerians have also appealed to the Federal Government to nip the ugly trend in the bud.

Special Assistant on New Media to the Senate President, Bamikole Omishore, said the Senate President is in touch with Senators from that state and constantly getting updates on developments even though the Senate is on recess.

CAN declares national day of mourning over Kaduna killings

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has asked Christians in the country and in the diaspora to wear black clothes to mourn those killed in Southern Kaduna.

The association also faulted the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari on the development, alleging that he has endorsed the killings of Christians.

Musa Asake, general secretary of CAN, said this in a statement.

“The ongoing silence over the ongoing genocide in Kaduna in the last few weeks speaks volume over perceived official endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts,” Asake said in a statement.

“In view of the present predicament, the president of CAN has directed that Sunday, January 8, 2017, should be declared a national day of mourning by Christians including those in the Diaspora.

“We are to pray fervently for our southern Kaduna brothers and sisters who are victims of these wanton killings and also for the peace of our dear country, Nigeria. Therefore all Christians are to dress in the mourning attire black dresses in all our church services on January 8, 2017.

“We are to pray that God who delivered the Jews from Haman should deliver Christians from the Hamans in Nigeria. An injustice to one is an injustice to all.”

CAN asked Nigerians to speak up against the “ethnic and religious cleansing to wake up the Nigerian security agencies from their deliberate slumber  to carry out their responsibility.”

The association said the Christians in Nigeria have been persecuted since 2009.

“Though the church in Nigeria, since 2009, has been subjected to a systematic genocide and persecution through the instrumentality of the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, leading to the killings of thousands of Christians and destruction of hundreds of churches, and over 50,000 houses, the current unprecedented onslaught against Christians by Islamic fundamentalists disguising as Fulani herdsmen under the watch of Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and President Muhammadu Buhari has reached an alarming stage.”

“While we commend President Buhari for waging war against Boko Haram since his assumption of office, his silence over the ongoing genocide in the last few weeks speaks volume over the perceived official endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts.”

Afenifere: Governor El-Rufai should disclose perpetrators of southern Kaduna killings

President Muhammadu Buhari was yesterday advised to exhibit respect for the sanctity of life and speak up on the countless attacks and killings across the country, especially in southern Kaduna.

The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, said the wanton killings believed to have been masterminded by Fulani herdsmen was not like every other issue that the president was not expected to comment on.

In a statement by its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere therefore demanded that Buhari speak to the people of Southern Kaduna with comforting words as their President on the mindless horrors that have been visited on them.

The group urged the president to set up an inquiry into the killings to identify the remote and immediate causes, identify the perpetrators and also compel Governor Nasir El-Rufai to disclose all the killers he has interfaced with and compensated so that they can be brought to trial.

Afenifere which asked Mr. President to instruct security agencies accused of taking sides in the conflicts to perform their duties fairly, also sought government compensation for the victims of these barbaric attacks.

The statement read in parts: “It grieves us that the Federal Government has been quiet on these killings, relying on the governor of the state who has openly confessed that he looked out for the killers to compensate them because they are of the same ethnic stock with him.

“A state of emergency ought to have been declared in Kaduna as the governor, by that claim, can no longer be trusted to perform his constitutional duty of protecting the lives and property of all citizens.”

Afenifere described as embarrassing a statement credited to the spokesman of the President, Mr. Femi Adesina that Buhari had been quiet on the killings because he could not speak on every issue.

“How can the killings of citizens in hundreds be ‘every issue’? Has our President not sent messages to other countries where tragedies of lesser proportion occurred?

“When Mr. President was to visit Bauchi a few days ago and couldn’t make the trip because of bad weather, did he not speak directly to the people in Hausa language?

“The disappointment the people of Bauchi experienced over cancellation of a visit cannot be compared in any way to the sorrows, pains and anguish of the people of Southern Kaduna.”

Afenifere’s reaction was based on the report by the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan in Kaduna, which disclosed that a total of 808 people were killed in 53 villages across the four local governments in the crisis-ridden states.

Giving statistics of the killings and destruction in a statement in Kafanchan, the church leaders said 57 people were injured while farm produce estimated at N5.5 billion were also destroyed.

The statement disclosed further that a total of 1,422 houses and 16 churches were burnt during the attacks which spread across Kaura, Sanga, Jama’a and Kauru councils where there had been persistent attacks on communities by gunmen believed to be Fulani herdsmen.

Also, the Bishop of Kaduna Diocese of Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev Timothy Yahaya yesterday urged Buhari to declare a national day of
mourning over the killing of innocent citizens while fielding questions from journalists shortly after the New Year service at the Saint Michael Cathedral Church, Kaduna?. “Killings in Nigeria is almost ?handled with levity, death in a nation attracts national mourning. The President must see to his constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and properties of the citizens,” the cleric said.

El-Rufai Meets Buhari Over Southern Kaduna Attacks

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, on Thursday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja over the renewed violence in parts of the state.

The state government had on Wednesday imposed a 24-hour curfew in Zangon-Kataf, Kaura and Jema’a Local Government Areas of the state following the Tuesday attack on the governor’s convoy.

The governor and his entourage were reportedly pelted with stones and some of their vehicles were damaged after the governor addressed some demonstrators.

Speaking with State House correspondents, El-Rufai confirmed that he had, at the closed door meeting with the President, informed him about the security situation in the state and efforts being made to put the situation under control.

He said he was receiving tremendous support from the President on how to stabilise the state.

The governor said, “I came to brief the President about the situation in Southern Kaduna, what happened in the last few days and outlined to him the measures we have been taking as state government with the support of the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services.

“The President has given us unqualified support to stabilise the state and bring all those responsible for the violation of our laws to justice.

“So, we have the full support of the President to move on and we are quite confident that things will return to normal very soon.”

Reacting to criticism that he was planning to impose curfew on the affected areas on Christmas Day, the governor said the curfew for that day would be for only 12 hours.

While saying he should not be blamed for the development, El-Rufai said the state government decided to impose curfew because of what he called the irresponsible behaviour of some people.

“Well, we have curfew even on Christmas Day but it is for 12 hours. People will be able to get out in the morning at 6am and be back at 6pm. It is because of the security situation.

“I do not think the state government should be blamed. Those responsible for the violence that broke out in those parts of the state should be held responsible for that.

“We have not imposed curfew in other parts of the state. We had to impose curfew here because of the situation that was caused by the irresponsible behaviour of certain people,” the governor concluded.

We’ve Paid Some Aggrieved Herdsmen To Stop Killings In Southern Kaduna– El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai has said his government has traced some violent, aggrieved herdsmen to their countries and paid them to stop the killings of Southern Kaduna natives and the destruction of their communities saying that the renewed violence is carried out by bandits.

El-Rufai made this known while fielding questions from some select Journalists in his office in Kaduna.

He said: “For southern Kaduna, we didn’t understand what was going on and we decided to set up a committee under Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd) to find out what was going on there. What was established was that the root of the problem has a history starting from the 2011 post election violence.

“Fulani herdsmen from across Africa bring their cattle down towards Middle Belt and Southern Nigeria. The moment the rains starts around March, April, they start moving them up to go back to their various communities and countries. “Unfortunately, it was when they were moving up with their cattle across Southern Kaduna that the elections of 2011 took place and the crisis trapped some of them.

“Some of them were from Niger, Cameroon, Chad, Mali and Senegal. Fulanis are in 14 African countries and they traverse this country with the cattle. “So many of these people were killed, cattle lost and they organised themselves and came back to revenge.

“So a lot of what was happening in Southern Kaduna was actually from outside Nigeria. We got a hint that the late Governor Patrick Yakowa got this information and he sent someone to go round some of these Fulani communities, but of course after he died, the whole thing stopped. That is what we inherited. But the Agwai committee established that.

“We took certain steps. We got a group of people that were going round trying to trace some of these people in Cameroon, Niger republic and so on to tell them that there is a new governor who is Fulani like them and has no problem paying compensations for lives lost and he is begging them to stop killing.

“In most of the communities, once that appeal was made to them, they said they have forgiven. There are one or two that asked for monetary compensation. They said they have forgiven the death of human beings, but want compensation for cattle. We said no problem, and we paid some. As recently as two weeks ago, the team went to Niger republic to attend one Fulani gathering that they hold every year with a message from me.”
