Nigerian Army To Set Up Cattle Ranches Nationwide

The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has said that the Nigerian Army would be raising up cattle ranches in almost all the divisions and brigades.

Mr. Buratai, who was represented by the Chief of Army Logistics, Patrick Akem, said this on Tuesday at the Commissioning of Mogadishu Cantonment New Mammy Market (former Abacha Barracks), Abuja.

The Army Chief said in keeping up with modern cattle rearing tradition, he sent officers to Argentina to look at how cattle were reared.

“Argentina has a population of 41 million people, but it feeds about 400 million people around the world with its beef.

“To take it to the next level, we want to adopt a system where the cattle are not just free ranging coming from Sokoto to Port Harcourt, thereby making their meat tough to eat, the products will soon be coming from our own farms and ranches,” he said.

He said he created the Barrack Investment Initiative as a platform that affords Army family members the opportunity of raising up fishing ponds, vegetable gardens, fruits, livestock, chicken and their eggs.

According to him, the intention of the Nigerian Army was not just to secure the country, but to contribute in growing the economy of the nation.

He added: “We want to tell our wives that they can live beyond the salaries of their husbands, so we are trying to empower the women in the barracks to be able to form co-operatives, so as to access loans and to a large extent be able to fend for themselves and their families, even without the salaries of their husbands.”

IGP Set Up 27 Man Committee To Tackle Cattle Rustling

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim  Idris has set up a 27 man committee saddled with the responsibility of offering solutions to tackle cattle rustling.

The Committee, which is headed by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Animal Branch, AIG Charles Ugomuoh and members drawn from all over the affected states, and ECOWAS, is a standing committee, and was tasked to draw up policies and strategies to handle the issue of cattle rustling.

Also, the IGP has directed a high powered investigation team to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of DSP Mohammed Alkali and others missing?.

The IGP condoles with the family for this great loss and identify with the grief of his colleagues.

The IGP also expressed satisfaction in the performance of the police officers deployed in the re-run parliamentary elections in Rivers State held on Saturday, December, 10 2016.

The IGP noted that “there is no doubt that some disgruntled elements in the state attempted to foist violence and insecurity on the populace that are generally peace loving. Comparatively, the re-run election was a huge success in contrast to past elections in the state that were usually characterized by violence and wanton destruction of lives and property.?

“The IGP master plan on election security will continue to be improved upon for future elections in the county. This master plan will usher in credible, fair, free and acceptable elections in accordance with the principles of democratic policing and international best practices.”

Police Set Up 16bn Crime Database

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday, laid the foundation for the construction of the Nigeria Police Crime and incident database (NPCID) estimated at the cost of N16 billion when completed.

Speaking at the ceremony, the vice president said the centre will equip the Nigeria Police Force with the necessary modern instrument to be able to tackle the technical and smart ways crimes have evolved over the years.

The vice president, while challenging the police on modern techniques for solving crimes, noted that the Nigeria Police officers have always been one of  the best in the world and expressed hope that with the centre in place, the Force would be equipped with all the necessary instrument to work.

“The Nigeria Police Force has been one of the best in the world. I am saying this because I witnessed what they achieved in Somalia on a peace mission as I worked with the United Nations and saw how our police distinguished themselves.

“Also, as an attorney general in Lagos for  eight years, I worked with the police. The  challenge has been lack of equipment and welfare of the policemen. I believe that with the proposed Nigeria Police Crime and incident database, our men will conduct police activities smartly and faster.”

Speaking on the expectations of the centre when completed, the acting Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris explained that the centre, which is projected at N16 billion when completed, will help the police to process data of suspects and get the needed information even if the suspect committed the crime in any part of the country.

FG To Set Up 100 Primary Healthcare Centres In 3 Months

The Federal Government of Nigeria has concluded plans to set up one hundred Primary Health Care Centres across the country within the next three months, a government official said on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters during an assessment tour of healthcare facilities in war torn northeast Nigeria, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewale, gave the figures.

Professor Adewale said that the plan was to provide each ward in the country with self-sufficient healthcare centres in line with global best practices.

In Borno State, the state worst hit by the insurgents, the State Governor, Kashim Shettima, was excited about the Federal Government’s interest in parts of the country ravaged by insurgency.

Shettima told the Minister that health facilities in Maiduguri the state capital were now overstretched because of the burden of insurgency victims and Persons dislodged from at least 20 local governments of the state.

Over two million persons have been displaced from the region in the over six years’ insurgency by members of the Boko Haram sect.

El-Rufai Bans Shi’ites, Others From Blocking Roads; To Set Up Commission Of Inquiry

The Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, says he will set up a judicial commission of inquiry into last weekend’s deadly clash between the Nigerian Army and members of the Shi’ia Islamic Movement, which left more than 60 people dead.

The army said troops used force after members of the group barricaded a road in Zaria and attempted to kill the chief of army, Tukur Buratai.

The exact number of casualties is still unclear, but majority of the victims are believed to be members of the Shi’ia sect.

Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the sect’s leader, was arrested by the military, after his wife and son were killed in the violence, the group said.

The killings have sparked international condemnation, with calls for a transparent investigation.

In a broadcast Thursday, Mr. El-Rufai announced a ban on processions — in all parts of the state — that could result in roads being barricaded.

He also said a judicial commission of inquiry would be set up by the state government to look into the incident in Zaria.

The governor said the composition and terms of reference of the commission would be announced within two weeks.

He assured the people of the state that the government was committed to securing the state and upholding the rights of every citizen.

“We have witnessed sad events in Zaria,” the governor said. “There have been tragic consequences and needless loss of lives, and we extend our condolences to the families that have been affected.”

“In this sombre moment, the government has directed that steps be taken to address the humanitarian fallouts of the security operations,” he said.

Fuel Scarcity: Imo Lawmakers Set Up Taskforce To Check Marketers

The Imo State House of Assembly has set up a joint taskforce to monitor independent oil marketers and ensure that they stop taking undue advantage of the present fuel scarcity.

While the fuel scarcity persisted, the lawmakers said it was concerned about the groaning agony faced by Imo citizens in getting fuel, as oil marketers had exploited the masses.

The taskforce is made up of some lawmakers, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Independent Petroleum Marketers, and Ministry of Petroleum in the state.

They were also mandated to see how the fuel crisis in the state could be alleviated.

At a meeting with all stakeholders in the oil sector held at the Imo state House of Assembly in Owerri, the Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum in the Imo State House of Assembly, Henry Ezediaro, expressed displeasure with the sharp practices by independent oil marketers.

The meeting pointed out that oil marketers were selling petrol at 200 Naira and above which is far above the Federal Government’s approved price of 87 Naira.

Saraki’s Case: CJN To Set Up Fresh Supreme Court Panel

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, is set to set up a fresh panel that will hear the appeal filed by Senate President Bukola Saraki, challenging the jurisdiction and competence of the charges by the Code of Conduct Tribunal over alleged false asset declaration preferred against him.

It was learnt on Wednesday that the CJNwas set to disband the Justice John Fabiyi-led five-member panel which on November 12, 2015, granted an order of a stay of proceedings in the Senate President’s trial before the CCT.

Ex-Police IG, Okiro, Denies Stealing N275m; Says Aide Set Him Up

The Chairman, Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, on Monday reacted to the allegation that he defrauded the commission of N275 million and vowed not to succumb to blackmail.

Mr. Okiri alleged that a staff of the commission, Aaron Kaase, of the Press Unit, colluded with a journalist to blackmail him with the allegation to collect N10 million.

The chairman, who spoke at a news conference in Abuja, said the commission received N350 million from the Federal Government to train its staff to monitor the conduct of police officers involved in the 2015 general elections.

Mr. Okiro had appeared before the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences on June 4, following a petition by Kaase that he embezzled N275 million belonging to the commission.

“I still believe that a clear conscience fears no accusation and I will not yield to blackmail no matter how long it takes to clear my name.

“I have nothing to fear,” he said.

According to Mr. Okiro, the commission received N350 million for election monitoring/conferences/training of the staff of the commission and deployed them to states to monitor police conduct during the general elections of 2015.
