Re-run: Wike To Release Video Implicating CP

Rivers  State  governor,Mr.  Nyesom  Ezenwo  Wike,has  announced  that  the state government would, in the  coming  weeks,  release audio-visual footages of the  state commissioner of police, Mr.Francis Odesanya, allegedly plotting with politicians on the methods  to  be  adopted  in  rigging  the December 10 rescheduled legislative elections.

Governor  Wike,  in  a  press statement  signed  by  his  Special Assistant,  Electronic  Media,  Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, made the announcement while flagging off rehabilitation works of the General Hospital,  Abonnema  in  AkukuToru  Local  Government  Area  of the state, yesterday.

According  to  him,  the  audiovisual  footages  would  be  made public  through  different  media platforms  to  expose  the  extreme rigging  desires  of  the  Independent  National  Electoral  Commission  (INEC),  with  the  backing of  the  police  and  other  security

agencies. The  governor  further  alleged that  600  policemen  working  with the  Special  Anti-Robbery  Squad (SARS)  in  the  state  have  already been distributed to prominent APC leaders on local government basis by the Police Commissioner for the indiscriminate  arrest  of  Peoples  Democratic  Party  (PDP)  supporters a few days to the election. The governor added that the 600

SARS  personnel  so  distributed would also be used to unleash unprecedented  violence  on  the  people  on  election  day,  so  that  APC leaders would have time to substitute result sheets handed over to them by the INEC leadership.

“We  are  now  in  possession  of the  DVD  of  how  the  Police  Commissioner  and  some  politicians were  planning  on  how  to  rig  the forthcoming  legislative  re-run elections  in  Rivers  State.  At  the  appropriate time, we shall release the  materials  for  Nigerians  to understand the depth of the electoral  fraud  being  perpetrated  by

INEC and Police. “For  the  security  of  this  all important  audio-visual  material, we have mass-produced them and kept  them  at  different  locations. Nigerians  are  entitled  to  know the  truth  about  the  unfortunate rigging machine. “Now that we have caught them on tape, this will shake the world.

Rivers State is not like other states  where  you  can  plot  and  execute easy rigging plans.

Rivers re-run holds Dec 10, Lagos & FCT Dec 3 – INEC

The outstanding National and State Assembly elections in Rivers State will be conducted on December 10, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Thursday in Abuja.

 

Mrs Auguta Ogakwu, Secretary to the commission in a statement said that the commission had also approved December 3 to conduct election for the vacant Ifako/Ijaiye seat of Lagos State in the House of Representatives.

The seat became vacant following the death of the member who represented the constituency in the House, Mr Adewale Oluwatayo, in July.

 

On the same day, according to the statement, the commission will also conclude rescheduled councillorship polls in some area councils in the Federal Capital Territory.

“After months of intensive planning and wide consultations, the Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday approved the conduct of Lagos’ House of Representative election on Saturday, Dec 3, 2016.

 

“Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Councillorship election will also hold on Saturday, Dec 3, 2016.

 

“Rivers, National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) and State House of Assembly elections on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016,” the statement said.

APC Wins Imo North Senate District, 2 State Constituencies In Re-Run Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mr Ben Uwajumogu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) winner of Imo North Senatorial District rerun election held on July 28.

 

Uwajumogu scored 56,076 votes to defeat Mr Athan Achonu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 43, 815 votes.

 

Prof. Arinze Agbogu, the INEC Returning Officer for Imo North Senatorial District, who announced the result in the early hours of Friday, said the outcome was a summation of scores of July 23 and that of July 28 exercise.

 

It will be recalled that Uwajumogu had scored 48,921 on July 23, while Achonu, of the PDP, scored 40, 142 votes which made INEC to declare the rerun inconclusive.

 

Agbogu said that available data before him showed that Uwajumogu had majority of lawful votes cast, and therefore returned elected for the Imo North Senatorial District.

 

Similarly, INEC declared Mr Nkenna Nzeruo of the APC winner of Oru East State Constituency, while Mr Collins Chiji also of APC was declared winner for Isiala Mbano State Constituency.

 

The two state constituencies’ elections were equally declared inconclusive due to reported cases of violence that marred the exercise in some communities in the two areas on July 23.

 

Uwajumogu told journalists in Owerri that he was highly elated over the victory, adding “my gratitude goes more to Governor Rochas Okorocha whose structure helped me to win this senatorial election’’.

Fresh: APC/PDP At War Over Rivers Election Re-Run

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for postponing the National and State Assembly rerun elections in Rivers State once more. PDP voiced its anger in a series of tweets on its official Twitter handle on Wednesday and noted that this was second postponement following an initial postponement in March this year.

 

The party, which also aimed potshots at President Muhammadu Buhari, claimed that the postponements have only allowed for the continuation of ‘unjust and illegal’ deprivation of the people of the state proper representation in the National Assembly.

 

“The people of Rivers State have continually been deprived of representation at the National Assembly. This deprivation is unjust & illegal.” “Without mincing words, we condemn this action. This is the second postponement after the rerun elections were previously postponed in March,” the party said. “With each postponement INEC & the security agencies are telling Nigerians that the Buhari admin is incapable of protecting Nigerians.”

 

Apparently, the party sees the postponement as a ploy by the Commission to prevent its state, Rivers from benefiting from proper representation in the National Assembly.

It would be recalled that INEC on Tuesday announced the postponement of the July 30 rerun election because it could not guarantee the safety of its officials and elections nor guarantee a free and fair exercise because of the high level of insecurity in the state.

 

A statement signed by the Commission’s secretary, Augusta Ogakwu, read: “The reports of these assessments have been almost unanimous in concluding that the prevailing security situation in most parts of the state where elections are to hold are not conducive for peaceful elections.

 

“In the Commission’s view, the rhetorics of some of the political actors, the incidence of violence in a number of local government areas where these elections are scheduled and the atmosphere of fear and intimidation created present danger in proceeding with elections as earlier scheduled.”

 

The Commission assured “that it is ready to conclude elections in Rivers State within shortest time possible once security situation is conducive for the conduct of peaceful polls”.

Probe Rivers Re-run Elections Crisis Now, PDP To Buhari

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has tasked the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to constitute a panel to carry out a comprehensive and dispassionate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crisis in the March 19 rerun elections in Rivers State. The National Chairman of PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff made the call at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, just as the United States Government, through its diplomatic mission to Nigeria in a statement on Tuesday, condemned reported violence and irregularities that rocked last Saturday’s rerun elections in Rivers State, even as the British High Commission also expressed concern over the level of violence recorded at the polls.

Also on Tuesday, the PDP members in the House of Representatives urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately release results of rerun elections in Rivers. Briefing newsmen in Abuja, the caucus led by Minority Leader of the house, Rep. Leo Ogor, condemned the suspension of the election, saying it was strange to the country’s electoral laws. According to him, in accordance with section 27of the Electoral Act, the Constitution and all Supreme Court judgements, elections were concluded, and results had been announced at the unit levels.

“In this context, anything contrary to the announcement of the result is a breach of all our electoral laws and evidently a coup against the people of Rivers State. “It is very sad that it is the umpire, that is, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that is spearheading this illegality abetted by law enforcement agencies, particularly the military whose attention is needed in the North-East,’’ they said. Ogor briefed the press just as INEC offered automatic employment to a member of the National Youth Corps (NYSC) who lost her sight during the 2011 general elections in Yobe State. Similarly, the commission promised to fully participate in the burial programme of Okonta Samuel, a corps member who lost his life in last Saturday’s rerun elections in Rivers State.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yukabu offered the employment and made the promise when he paid a condolence visit to the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig-General Johnson Olawumi on Tuesday. Professor Yakubu, who regretted the circumstances, which led to the unfortunate death of the corps member, praised the services of youth corps members in the conduct of elections. The PDP National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, at the press conference contended that the probe panel would unravel those behind the violence and bring the culprits to book.

The rerun National and State Assemblies’ elections, it will be recalled, were marred by crisis leading to killings, abductions and assassination attempts. The PDP National Chairman said “Whilst we join well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the cases of violence which reportedly characterized the process in some areas, we enjoin the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to immediately constitute a panel to carry out a dispassionate investigation of the circumstances with a view to unraveling the truth and bringing the culprits to book”.

Sheriff equally condemned the role played by some officers and members of the Armed Forces. He accused them of acting beyond their expected role of maintenance of law and order, alleging that they have taken over the responsibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ) in the conduct of the rerun election. According to him, the military acted in flagrant disobedience of a order of court, and further called on President Muhammadu Buhari to also investigate the role of the military personnel in the election and appropriate sanction meted for those found culpable.

His words, “Our longheld view, proven over the years by our attitude of accepting declared results of elections, is that the mandate of the Nigerian people is sacred and anybody or party which seeks to govern Nigeria or any part of it must solicit and obtain this mandate freely given in an openly contested election where democratic norms and ethos are rigidly observed.

Rivers Re-Run: INEC Releases Statement On Election Results

STATEMENT BY THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION(INEC) ON THE NATIONAL AND STATE ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS IN RIVERS STATE

Pursuant to the Orders of the Court of Appeal, the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) conducted elections into various seats in both the National and the Rivers State House of Assembly yesterday, the 19th of March, 2016.
Rather unfortunately, some of these elections witnessed the disruption of the process, including the barricading of some of the INEC Local Government offices and Registration Area Centres(RACs) used for the distribution of Electoral materials which led to the late commencement of the exercise in some places and consequently, its smooth take off.
Of more serious concern was the level of threats, violence and intimidation of election officials and voters by well armed thugs and miscreants allegedly acting on behalf of some politicians, which marred the elections in some areas. There were reports of numerous attacks resulting in fatalities, kidnappings, ballot snatching, diversion of officials and materials, amongst others, which necessitated its suspension in 8 Local Government Areas.
Regrettably, such deviant behaviour has continued today. Several permanent and ad hoc staff engaged have been attacked, again resulting in fatalities, while some have been forcibly abducted and taken to presently unknown destinations.
Under such difficult circumstance, the Returning Officers were only able to collate and declare results in 1 Federal and 9 State constituencies where the disruption and malpractices were not so widespread.
Having reviewed the situation, the Commission is compelled to suspend all further action concerning the exercise in all the other constituencies in the State pending the receipt of a comprehensive report from its Field Officials and Monitors. For the avoidance of doubt, it should be noted that the suspension does not affect the constituencies where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the Returning Officers.

Rivers Re- Run: INEC Cancels Election In 8 LGAs

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cancelled re-run election in eight local government areas of Rivers State.

Addressing reporters on Sunday, a day after the re-run election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, said that the cancelation was due to irregularities at the affected local government areas.

Election held in Etche and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas were the latest to be cancelled.

In a press statement, the INEC official said: “Further to our earlier pronouncement on the suspension of the re-run in the six Local Government Areas of Khana, Bonny, Gokana, Andoni, Tai and Eleme, following disturbances and violence that impeded the electoral process in those parts of the state, it has become necessary to suspend elections in Etche and Asari-Toru LGAs for the same reasons.

“Please note that the suspension of the re-run elections by INEC is necessitated by the need to forestall breakdown of law and order in the event of further aggravation of crisis.

“INEC needs to put all stakeholders on notice that we are still studying the situation in the other fifteen LGAs, where collations are currently going on”.

So far, re-run election has been canceled in Khana, Bonny, Gokana, Andoni, Tai and Eleme, Etche and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas.

The electoral umpire further cited violence, snatching of ballot boxes, noncompliance to electoral law as part of the reasons for cancellation.

INEC said it is reviewing the rest of the process in the re-run polls while collation of results are ongoing.

Situation Report: Bayelsa State Governorship Re-run Election

Voting has ended in all polling units in Bayelsa State, where a governorship re-run election took place on Saturday.

Reports from Bayelsa State said collation of results have started at the ward level in most parts of the state – Nembe, Ogbia, Brass and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas.

Results are expected from Southern Ijaw and some other polling units in six other local government areas, to conclude the election that was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the initial poll on December 5.

The Southern Ijaw Local Government Election was cancelled on the December 7, 2015, due to violence, ballot box snatching and stuffing, harassment and abduction of electoral officials.

Southern Ijaw Local Government has a total of 120, 827 registered voters, 425 Polling Units and five Voting Points.

Thirty-eight thousand registered voters in 102 Polling Units across six Local Governments – Brass, Ekeremor, Nembe, Sagbama, Yenagoa and Ogbia – also participate in the election to conclude the Bayelsa State governorship election earlier scheduled for Saturday, December 5, 2015.

Reports provides that election materials arrived early at some polling units in Yenagoa, but other areas such as Southern Ijaw got election materials late. INEC had promised early delivery of materials to polling units where voting took place.

To fast-track the process, INEC revised its election guideline on Friday, making it possible for accreditation and voting to go on simultaneously.

“We Are Solidly Behind David Mark” – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Part (PDP) has described the former senate president David Mark as an asset to the Nigerian nation.

A statement by the party’s national publicity secretary, Oliseh Metu said the PDP and the entire people of Benue state are “solidly” behind Mark in an election re-run for Benue South senatorial zone.

Metu said the former Senate president is expected to repeat his victory in a re-run ordered by the court of appeal.

He said the Benue people and supporters of the PDP since 1999 would remain steadfast in giving Mark another resounding victory at the rerun election.

He said the party is confident the senatorial seat will be retained even stronger now.

He said this is possible now that ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC) deceit has become obvious to Nigerians.

Metu said: “The inexplicable ruling of the Appeal Court, even when all evidence pointed to Mark’s victory as upheld by the lower tribunal, is yet another evidence of APC’s dangerous interference in the judiciary, which negative consequences the PDP has continued to alert the nation.”

He said contributions by the senator in the growth and stability of the nation’s democracy growing and stabilizing through his mature, responsible and patriotic leadership of the senate is still highly needed in the polity.

The party also urged its members in Benue South to resist any attempt of intimidation, especially in their determination to ensure effective and result-oriented representation in the senate as typified in senator Mark.

Mark’s elections as senator representing the Benue South zone was nullified by the Court of Appeal on Saturday.

The court also ordered a re-run of the election.

However, Mark has also said he is confident of winning the election many times.

‘I won the election clean and clear. If we go back to the polls 100 times , I will still win convincingly,” Mark said in a statement by his media assistant.

Forget About Re-run, Wike Tells Peterside

Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has told the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 governorship election, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, not to delude himself on the possibility of a rerun of the poll in the state.

Wike, who said Peterside embarked on an illegal campaign on Saturday, explained that the APC leader’s action could heat up the polity.

The governor, who spoke on Tuesday through his Media Assistant, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, disclosed that his lawyers were concluding the appeal process to challenge the ruling of the Justice Suleiman Ambrosa-led Rivers State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

He noted that the ruling, which was premised on card reader accreditation and hearsay testimonies, had already been expunged from the tribunal’s records by the Court of Appeal.

Abia Tribunal Annuls Election, Bars APGA From Re-run

The National and State Assemblies Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia has barred the opposition All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, from participating in a fresh election it ordered in Aba North State Constituency.

The tribunal has nullified the election of Mr. Emeka Nnamani of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, representing Aba North State Constituency on the ground that he was abinitio, not qualified to contest the election held on April 11, 2015.

Delivering judgment in the petition filed by Dr. Blessing Nwagba of PDP challenging the election of Nnamani, the tribunal nullified his election and ordered a fresh election in the constituency but said that APGA would not participate in the fresh election.

According to the chairman of the tribunal, Justice Sabiu Yahuza, “the petitioner, Dr. Nwagba proved the allegation of non-qualification leveled against the respondent as his name was not in the register of his Eziama Ward of his party, APGA, and ought not to have participated in the said election.”

The panel however exempted APGA from participating in the re-run of the election, saying that it would be between the petitioner’s party, PDP, and the other candidates from the other parties that participated in the April election.

On the allegation that Nnamani forged the certificate of University of Port Harcourt, the tribunal directed the police to investigate the matter and prosecute the respondent if found culpable.

Tribunal Orders Re-Run In Akwa Ibom Gov. Election

The Akwa Ibom State  governorship tribunal has ordered for a rerun of the governorship election in the state.

The Tribunal ordered Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct re-run election in 18 local government areas of the state. There are 31 LGs in Akwa Ibom.

Giving its verdict on Wednesday, the Tribunal said it was satisfied that there were discrepancies during the governorship election held on April 11.

The Tribunal further asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct the re-run elections.
