Lagos Dep. Gov. Urges Public School Managers To Shun Negligence

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule, on Monday urged public school Head Teachers and Principals to be diligent and take ownership of their schools to improve learning.

Adebule made the plea during an inspection tour of some primary and secondary schools in the State in the company of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs Olabisi Ariyo.

She expressed displeasure over the dilapidated and dirty condition of some of the physical infrastructure and environment of the schools.

The Deputy Governor said in spite of the massive work the state government was doing to refurbish the public schools, their managers were still unable to take proper care of the facilities.

”I am not happy with the state of some the schools and it is because there are no consequences for such negligible act by school head teachers, principals and teachers.

”We can see some school environment so dirty and bushy, the classrooms and toilets are in bad shape, some were rowdy and noisy even when teachers were there.

”These school managers are seeing the schools as government properties and have refused to take ownership of these schools.

“I urge public school managers to imbibe maintenance culture, as this would make the schools comfortable, inhabitable and conducive for learning, ” she said.

Adebule said that there would also be consequences for Principals and Head Teachers whose schools were dirty, to serve as a deterrent.

She said that government would continue to place high priority on education by ensuring adequate human resource and infrastructure development.

The deputy governor urged public school managers to collaborate with the government.

Some of the schools visited were Agidingbi Junior and Senior Grammar schools in Agidingbi, Estate Primary School and Ogba Primary school in Ogba.

Other are All Saints Primary School, Holy Trinity Primary School, Bishop Oluwole Primary School, Sonmori Senior Comprehensive High School and Ifako Ijaiye Senior Comprehensive High school, all in Ifako-Ijaiye, as well as Ahmad Memorial and Muslim Primary School in Agege.

NAN also reports that some of the primary schools were in bad conditions with leaking roofs, abandoned classrooms, dilapidated toilets, shortage of chairs and tables for pupils, bushy environment and classes not properly illuminated.

Katsina orders withdrawal of children from private schools

The Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has directed primary school teachers and all head teachers in the state to withdraw their children from private schools and enrol them in public schools.

The SUBEB chairman, Lawal Buhari Daura gave the directive on Wednesday, during an inspection tour of Local Education Authority (LEA) in Kankia.

Daura said the directive was in line with an earlier order issue by the Governor, Aminu Bello Masari that public officers under his administration must patronise public schools as part of efforts to revive the education sector.

According to reports, most of the primary school teachers in public schools do not patronise public schools as they enrol their children and wards in private schools, an action which suggests that they have no confidence in the public schools.

Borno to re-open public schools

Borno State Government is set to reopen public schools in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

As part of effort to open these schools, which are now accommodating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from all parts of the state, the state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, has constituted a 13-man committee to work out modalities for their reopening.

Primary and secondary schools in the state have been shut for over a year now with students due to series of attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents which left 22 of the 27 local governments in the state captured.

Though Maiduguri, the state capital was never captured by the insurgents, many primary and secondary schools in the capital have become homes to thousands of IDPs and making it difficult for classes to hold in the city.

There has been agitations for the reopening of the schools for sometimes now, with the state government always having to promise to get students back to schools without any concrete action.

But with the constitution of a committee to work out the modalities for the reopening of the schools, the schools are expected to be opened for classes in Maiduguri at the beginning of next academic session when the students might have lost two academic sessions.

The state government in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Jidda Shuwa at the weekend said the committee has been given three weeks within which to submit its report to the government, after which an action would be taken on the reopening of the schools.

The terms of reference of the committee include: identifying the total number of public schools and advise government on how best these schools could be effectively used for academic activities.

The committee is expected to take into consideration those schools currently accommodating IDPs as well as evaluate how best the Internally Displaced students/pupils at the camps and those staying with relatives in the host communities could appropriately be sent to the existing public schools in the state capital.

The committee is also expected to make recommendations on how the State Universal Basic Education Board should post relevant teaching staff to secondary and primary schools in view of the existing conditions.

The committee is equally tasked with the responsibility of liaising with security agencies on provision of adequate security to the IDPs and the schools when reopened and to recommend measures that it may find necessary for the effective and smooth achievement of the set objectives.

The committee will be chaired by Alhaji Gambo Gubio and has as members other notable personalities in the state, including Dr. Bulama Mali Gubio, Alhaji Haruna Idrisa Timta, Alhaji Musa Inuwa Kubo, Alhaji Abubakar Musa, Alhaji Lawan Shettima Benisheikh, Mohammed Kauji, among others.
