Gambia President-elect Demands Jammeh Steps Down ‘Now’

Gambian president-elect Adama Barrow said on Monday that longtime leader Yahya Jammeh should step down immediately after Jammeh reversed his decision to concede defeat following a presidential election.

“I think he should step down now,” Barrow told AFP. “He has lost the election, we don’t want to waste time, we want this country to start moving.”

Jammeh’s party announced a legal challenge on Saturday over the December 1 election in which he had already conceded defeat to Barrow.

Barrow is due to welcome a heavyweight delegation of African heads of state and UN representatives Tuesday to persuade Jammeh to go, which the president-elect said gave him confidence he would soon take power.

“It’s giving us confidence and it will give confidence to every Gambian that the world is concerned about Gambia,” he said.

Diplomatic sources told AFP the delegation is likely to include UN West Africa envoy Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, and Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in her capacity as head of the west African bloc ECOWAS.

Jammeh has led the tiny sliver of a nation of just under two million people for 22 years since taking power in a coup.

Buhari Congratulates Gambian President-elect

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the President-elect of The Gambia, Mr Adama Barrow, on his victory in the country’s presidential election.

The President also saluted the spirit of statesmanship displayed by the out-going President of the country, Alhaji Yahya Jammeh, by conceding defeat.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, on Saturday in Abuja, Buhari noted that such uncommon gesture was crucial in calming fears of unrest in the West African nation.

While expressing delight at the gallantry shown by Jammeh, President Buhari enjoined President-elect Barrow to be magnanimous in victory.

He also commended Gambians for peacefully exercising their democratic right to freely choose their leader and called on all stakeholders to maintain the peace.

Philippines President-Elect: Public ‘Can Kill’ Criminals

Philippines president-elect Rodrigo Duterte effectively said he supports vigilantism in a nationally-televised speech.

Faced with criminals who resist arrest or threaten citizens, the controversial politician suggested that it was fine for citizens to take the law into their own hands.

“If he fights, and he fights to the death, you can kill him,” said the former mayor of Davao City, who was elected to the presidency in a decisive victory last month.

During the address, Duterte also encouraged citizens to use deadly force against drug dealers who threaten them. “Please feel free to call us, the police, or do it yourself if you have the gun … you have my support,” he told the crowd and television cameras.

“Shoot him [the drug dealer] and I’ll give you a medal.”

Your Comments Are Unbecoming Of A President-Elect- Group Tells Buhari

A group, National Peace Building and Conflict Reconciliation Organisation (NPBCTO), has advised President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to exercise restraint in making comments.

NPBTCO said the counsel became necessary as Buhari’s recent utterances and those of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) were capable of creating fear and disharmony among Nigerians who voted for him.

Bishop Greatman Nmalagu, Bishop of God Worshippers Assembly Worldwide and the National Presiding Bishop of Ecumenical Apostolic Church, Nigeria, spoke on behalf of the group to newsmen shortly after their meeting at Obiaruku in the Ukwuani Local Government area of Delta State.

Nmalagu observed that the APC and Buhari seem to have thrown caution to the wind after their victory by making all kinds of comments.

He said such attitude will not move the country forward and will make Nigerians come to the conclusion that the incoming government was bent on witch-hunting political opponents.

NPBTCO particularly frowned at the statement credited to the Buhari and the APC that the economic and social development of Nigeria for 16 years of democracy were 16 years of waste.

Insisting that such statement was “unbecoming of President–elect of Nigeria”, the group urged Buhari “to be selective in his statements, most especially in criticising the outgoing government and the ruling party”.
