ASUU Rejects Scrapping Of Post-UTME

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday protested against the decision of the Federal Government to scrap the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Warning that the scrapping “portends a serious danger for the quality of education in Nigeria, “the union also said the decision undermined the autonomy and powers of universities’ Senate as the highest policy-making body on academic matters, particularly admission of students and award of degrees.

The ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who stated this in Abuja, added that the Federal Government did not consult the union on the matter.

He said, “The cancellation of post-UTME to us portends a serious danger for the quality of education in this country.

“The argument of Federal Government on the policy is unacceptable and potentially harmful to the future of Nigerian’s education system. We call on the government to rescind its decision and convene a genuine stakeholders ‘ meeting on the issue before making any policy statement.”

Unilag Releases Post UTME Results

The University of Lagos said a total of 17, 935 candidates of the 31,955 that sat for its 2015 Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) recently, passed the screening exercise.

This is contained in a statement signed by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information, Mr Olagoke Oke in Lagos.

It would be recalled that 31,955 candidates who scored 200 marks and chose the university as their school of first choice participated at the recent 2015 JAMB-organised UTME.

The statement explained that 26, 732 of the candidates registered for the post UTME screening for admissions into University of Lagos for the 2015/2016 session.

“A total of 17,935 candidates passed the screening test with a minimum score of 40 per cent…”

Tertiary Institutions Undermine JAMB By Conducting Post-UTME – NUT

Mr Gunsling Yarlings, the Plateau NUT Chairman, has said that tertiary institutions’ insistence on conducting post UTME was undermining JAMB’s function as a body expected to conduct the examinations to decide who should be admitted.

“The implication is that the board lacks the capacity to discharge its fucntions,” Yarlings told the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos on Thursday.

He said that JAMB’s UTME was enough to access candidates for admission into higher Institutions, and wondered why there should be other examinations after candidates had already been graded by the Board.

‘’Post UTME is tautology; it means the school authorities are undermining the capability of JAMB by conducting their own exams.

“ Teachers Registration council of Nigeria (TRCN), for instance, was established to determine the standards of knowledge and skills required to become registered teachers.

“NUT cannot come up with its set of rules to screen the skills required for teachers or discipline them because it clearly undermines the function of the TRCN and NUT is telling them that they are not capable of discharging their functions,’’ he said.
