Again Navy Cracksdown On Oil Thieves, Illegal Refineries

In line with the resolve to eliminate all forms of economic sabotage, crude oil theft and other criminal activities, operatives of the Nigerian Navy (NN) have continued the crackdown on criminals within the maritime domain.

 The patrol team deployed by NNS JUBILEE has arrested 13 suspects allegedly involved in illegal bunkering activities around Ibenoarea of Akwa Ibom State.
Commodore Christian Ezekobe, Spokesperson of the Nigerian Navy in a statement said the suspects were arrested in 3 Cotonouboats adding that two of the boats were carrying 55 and 48 drums of suspected illegally refined AGO respectively, while the third Cotonou boat was carrying about 188 empty drums.

 He said the suspects and exhibits have been handed over to officials of NSCDC for necessary action.

 The statement further said the patrol team deployed by FOB ESCRAVOS has also arrested 3 persons suspected to be oil thieves noting that the team also destroyed 6 Cotonou boats carrying suspected stolen crude oil around Sandhill Creek in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Ezekobe said the team recovered 2 wooden boats laden with 300 Metric Tones (MT) of stolen crude oil and a pumping machine during the raid.

 “Meanwhile, a patrol team deployed by NNS PATHFINDER has raided Adokiakiri Creek around Okirika axis and Dutch Island at Onnein Rivers State. During the operation, the Team arrested 8 suspects and destroyed 4 speedboats laden with 100 MT of illegally refined AGO.

“Two barges containing 500MT of suspected stolen crude oil were also destroyed by the team.

 “In another raid, the Patrol Team also arrested 3 suspects onboard MV OMETE VI and a large wooden barge laden with about 120MT of illegally refined AGO around FOT Onne in Rivers State” the statement said.

Suspected Oil Thieves Arrested With Over 65,000 Litres Of Crude Oil

Nine suspects allegedly involved in illegal oil bunkering and illegal transportation of crude oil have been arrested by the Nigerian Army in Imo State.

 The arrest was made by the 34 Artillery Brigade Command in Owerri, the capital of Imo State

A spokesman for the Command, Captain Ajemasu Jingina, told reporters that the arrest was made through the command’s operation PULO Shield saddled with the responsibility of curbing illegal oil bunkering, illegal oil theft, pipeline vandalism and kidnapping of oil workers.

According to him, the command was able to intercept four different trucks along Owerri Port Harcourt expressway conveying products containing over 33,000 litres of AGO and crude oil suspected to be gotten from illegal oil bunkering.

Captain Jingina said most of the suspects were arrested along Owerri-Port Harcourt expressway and oil producing Oguta Local Government Area of the state.

He said a truck with registration number ABB 239 XA carting 10,800 litres of substance suspected to be AGO was loaded into a well-constructed metal and concealed with piles of two by four inches woods in order to bit the check of security operatives on the highway.

Navy Declares War On Oil Thieves

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS), Pathfinder, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, seems to have declared war on illegal refining sites, following its destruction of illegal bunkering and refining sites in the state almost two weeks ago.

The naval personnel, who had been combing the creeks  to prevent the activities of the illegal bunkerers and refiners, were offered N600,000.

The Commander of the NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Shuwa Mohammed, told reporters yesterday in Port Harcourt that four suspects, who were arrested and would be handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

“Ironically, while setting the refinery ablaze, four out of the fleeing oil thieves came back and offered us a bribe of N600,000 to leave the refinery.

“The four suspects were subsequently arrested and would be handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for investigation and prosecution,” he said.

Names Of Oil Thieves Handed To Buhari By U.S

A member of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s entourage during last week’s visit to the US has disclosed that the US gave the president names of Nigerian oil thieves.

The source disclosed that the President was given two separate lists – one listing the names of top government officials who have been stealing the country’s oil, using their high offices to perpetrate the stealing; and the other containing the names of illegal oil bunkerers.

He said the President was already thinking of constituting a panel to investigate those on the list with a view to arriving at how to deal with them based on the findings of the committee.

The President had said last week that some ministers in the cabinet of Jonathan were stealing as much as 250 000 barrels of Nigeria’s crude daily.
