Militants Bomb Oil Pipeline In Warri

Nigerian militants on Tuesday bombed a state-run oil pipeline near the southern port city of Warri, the second attack within a week, a community leader and army officer said.

“The line which was undergoing repair after the previous attack … was billed for commissioning either today or tomorrow,” before the latest attack, chairman of Batan community Dickson Ogugu told AFP.

He said four surveillance guards deployed to protect the Trans Forcados export line narrowly escaped death after the militants opened fire on them.

“The hoodlums after chasing them from the spot came down from their speedboat, planted dynamite on swamp boogie, barge, crane and on the line,” he said.

“Unfortunately, only the dynamite on the barge exploded and immediately sank into the water. As I speak to you, the military are at the scene of the incident trying to dismantle the other dynamites.”

An army officer, who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident.

“We heard the shots in the middle of the night, but as you know, we do not patrol the area at night, so there was nothing we could do,” he said.

The line has been previously targeted by rebels.

Last week, the line was bombed just hours after President Muhammadu Buhari met with representatives of militant groups in the Niger delta to discuss how to end the unrest wracking the region.

The state-owned Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) operates the pipeline which receives crude from the Batan flowstation and feeds the Forcados export terminal.

Since the start of the year, several militant groups have attacked oil facilities, slashing the nation’s output and hammering revenues.

The militants claim to be seeking a fair share of the nation’s oil wealth for local residents as well as political autonomy for the region.

The government has launched peace talks with the rebels to end the violence.

Bombed Oil Pipeline Causing ‘Massive Spills’

Militants bombed a state-run oil pipeline in Warri on Monday causing massive spills, in the latest attack on the country’s oil infrastructure, said an industry official.

“The pipeline is operated by the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) at Batan near Warri. It was blown up early yesterday (Monday),” a senior official of a major oil firm told AFP Tuesday.

PPMC is a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, which runs a joint venture with firms such as Anglo-Dutch giant Shell, US firms Chevron and Exxon, Italy’s Eni and France’s Total.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said the pipeline was repaired only recently after it was bombed last month.

The latest attack had caused “massive spills of crude in the area”, said the official who called on the authorities to launch a clean-up.

The NNPC were not immediately available for comment when contacted by AFP.

No group has claimed responsibility but the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has claimed a wave of bombings of oil and gas facilities since the beginning of the year.

The attacks have reduced output at a time when Nigeria is struggling with low global crude prices which have hammered government revenues, weakening the country’s naira currency and pushing up inflation to near 11-year highs.

The militants want oil majors to leave the Niger delta, blaming them for contributing to widespread poverty and under-development of the region.

The group also wants self-determination for the oil-producing states in the delta region and political autonomy.

Niger Delta Avengers Blow Up Oil Pipeline Again

Militants suspected to be members of the Niger Delta Avengers have blown up an underground Chevron crude oil trunk line.

The trunk line is located along the Seria Creek near Abiteye, a few kilometres away from the company’s multi-billion dollars Tank Farm in Escravos, Warri South West local government area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the incident, which occurred midnight, was noticed by workers in the production department when they observed drop in production pressure.

A top Chevron management officer and a security source both separately confirmed the incident.

The source said a technical team of experienced engineers had been dispatched to the scene of the spill to ascertain the true cause.

Information available  revealed that the Seria Creek and all adjoining creeks of Abiteye have now been covered with massive oil spill emanating from the trunk line.

A local source in the area said, “At the moment, the entire creek has been littered with crude oil.”

The violent militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, also announced the attack on their twitter handle.
