Senate confirms Ambassadorial nominees despite failure to recite National Anthem

Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Tuesday took turn to lambaste some nominees for career Ambassadors who could not recite the Nigerian Anthem and National Pledge during their screen recently.

We can recalls that 4 out of the 47 nominees who attended Senate screening in August this year fumbled when the committee asked them to recite the National Anthem.

Submitting the report on the floor of the Senate, the committee Chairman on Foreign Affairs, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu admitted that four nominees could not recite the Anthem and National Pledge, but the committee overlooked it when those concerned pleaded and also promised that they would improve on it, when appointed.

The decision of the committee to screen and all recommend 47 names on the list, despite their shortcomings, did not go down well with some Senators who could not withhold their dissatisfaction.

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi (Delta North) queried the committee for screening and recommending the 47 nominees, despite their shortcomings during the screening exercise.

“Why did the committee recommend everybody on the list,” Nwaoboshi probed.

He condemned the submissions of the committee and added that someone who could not recite the Anthem of his or her country should not be made to represent same country in foreign land.

On his part, Senator Tijani Yahaya Laura (Zamfara North) expressed concern that the 116 foreign missions have remained inactive for months, due to inability of Nigerian government to send her Diplomats to occupy those vacant positions.

The Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, Deputy Minority Leader, Bala Ibn Na’allah and Senator James Manager (Delta South) however saved the day by convincing the Senate to confirm the nomination of the 47 career Ambassadors, saying that anxieties may have been responsible for their failure to recite the Anthem.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, therefore led the Senate into the committee of the whole where the 47 nominees were confirmed.

APC governors meet Buhari, flay envoy-nominees’ list.

Aggrieved governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have protested against the mode of nominating non-career ambassadors by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The governors who held an emergency meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja yesterday expressed anger at an alleged decision by the president not to consult them in the selection of the nominees whose names have already been forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha also recently confirmed the frustration of APC members while fielding questions from State House correspondents over federal appointments made so far by the President Buhari.

Lalong who specifically spoke about the situation in his state said: “All the states that have complaints are going to put them in writing and the president promised he is going to look into them.”

He noted that a former deputy governor in Plateau, Pauline Tallen rejected her nomination as ambassador based on principles in line with the political disposition of the state and not necessarily about her husband as reported in a section of the media.

Governor Lalong said he had already complained to the president that appointment into federal positions from the state should not be concentrated in one particular zone.

“Pauline is an astute politician from my state, and part of the issue we also raised was on some of the appointments that were made.

“It is not only about her husband, I think it is the dimension of Plateau politics.

“All these appointments came again from one zone, in that particular zone. So the complaint that is coming from our state is not about her own personal interest, it is about the fact that two ambassadorial appointments are coming from the same zone,” the governor said.

Governor Lalong also said that “that is my zone. We had complained that the next appointment should go to the other zone, the central and the northern zone. And so when that appointment came the kind of uproar that followed that appointment also necessitated an intervention.”

Also fielding questions, Governor Okorocha said the emergency meeting with the president also discussed the successes made in fighting the Boko Haram sect and the recent release of 21 Chibok girls kidnapped over two years ago.

NDDC Board: Senate Rejects Three Of President Buhari’s Nominees

The Nigerian Senate has began consideration of nominees for Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board with Senate president Bukola Saraki presiding over the plenary.

The Senate reverted to committee of the whole to deliberate on their confirmation.

However, three out of the 19 were not confirmed. They include Hon.Donatus Enyinnaya of Abia state, Sen. OSita Bonaventure Izunaso, Imo state and Olatokunbo Ayotunde Ajasin of Ondo state.

Saraki thanked the committee for their efforts and congratulated the chairman and the new members of the board.

Two months ago, the Senate officially received a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari requesting the confirmation of Victor Ndoma Egba as chairman and Isima Ekere as managing director of the NDDC.

The Nigerian Senate had on Tuesday, October 4, screened Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, the former Senate leader, as chairman of NDDC board and other members.

However, the former Senate leader was not screened, but spoke briefly to his colleagues, even as he was later asked to take a bow.

Senate Ends Screening, to Confirm Amaechi, Other Nominees Today

The screening of ministerial nominees, which began a fortnight ago, finally came to a close Wednesday, with the Senate deferring the confirmation of former Rivers State Governor, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and 17 other nominees.

The Senate’s decision to defer confirmation of the nominees stunned onlookers Wednesday, since it is not the custom of the chamber to defer confirmation of nominees once screening is concluded.

While watchers expected Senate President Bukola Saraki to commence the confirmation of the nominees at the end of screening at 3.25 pm, he only summarized what transpired during the screening exercise and thereafter announced adjournment till Thursday.

Those screened yesterday were Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, Professor Anthony Anwuka, Mr. Mohammed Bello, Ms. Aisha Abubakar and Mr. Adamu Adamu.
