Court stops launch of Nollywood movie “Okafor’s Law”, orders seizure of copies.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos has issued an Anton Piller order, directing the seizure of a film titled “Okafor’s Law” directed by Nollywood Producer, Omoni Oboli.

The court also issued an interim order, suspending the release and launch of the film, in any movie theatre or cinema house onMarch 31, pending the determination of a motion on notice before the court.

The judge ordered the seizure of all copies, materials, projections or infringing materials, relating to the subject matter.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the orders followed an ex parte application filed by a company, Rancoteur Productions Ltd, on behalf of a Canada based script writer, Jude Idada.

Idada lays claim to the film “Okafor’s Law” as his intellectual property.

The plaintiff had filed the suit through Anthony Idigbe, seeking an order, halting the premiere and release of the said “Okafor’s Law”, pending the determination of a copyright infringement suit filed against Oboli.

Joined as first to third defendants in the suit are: Dioni Visions Entertainment, Omoni Oboli, and The Filmore Ltd.

The plaintiff, in its exparte application, had sought an order, restraining the premiere or release of the said film, as well as an anton piller order, seizing all copies of the infringing material.

The exparte application was moved in terms by counsel from the law firm of Idigbe, O. Otudor, who urged the court to grant the orders as prayed.

Delivering his ruling on the exparte motion, Justice Buba granted the orders as prayed.

The court made the following orders:

“An order of interim injunction, restraining the first to third defendants, whether by themselves or their privies, from premiering the feature film “Okafor’s Law”, in Lagos or any part of Nigeria, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

“An order of interim injunction, restraining the defendant from releasing the featured film in any movie theatre or Cinema house on March 31, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

“An order of interim injunction, restraining the defendants from distributing the featured film, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

“An Anton piller order is granted to the plaintiff, to enter into the defendant’s premises, Cinema, Studio and other places of dissemination, to seize all copies of infringing materials relating to subject matter.

“An order, directing the defendants to deliver and surrender to the plaintiff’s solicitors, all products and packages with the inscription, “Okafor’s Law” and volume of transaction or trade which have been done by defendants.

“An order directing the defendants to permit the court’s bailiff, and such other persons not exceeding four (4), to enter the premises on any working day of Monday to Saturday at 8am to 8pm, to remove all products or packages with the name “Okafor’s Law”

“An order for a search to be conducted at Viva Heights Odudu Eleyiwo St, Block 15, plot 17 Oniru Victoria Island, and Plot 1378D Joseph Namah close, off Karimu Kotun St, Victoria Island and all other places where Okafor’s Law is stored and sold

“An order declaring that a failure of defendants to comply with the court’s order, will put the plaintiff at liberty to apply for committal to prison of such person,”

The court thereafter, fixed March 29 for hearing of the motion on notice.

NAN reports that the movie “Okafor’s Law” is billed for release on March 31,

The court’s order was, however, served on the defendants on the evening of March 24 shortly before the movie’s premiere.atthe IMAX Cinema in Lagos.

The order consequently, clogged the premiering of the debut movie.

Jude Idada had accused Oboli of copyright infringement on the “Okafor’s Law” movie, adding that she had stolen his story idea for the movie in September 2016.

He alleged that Oboli took the work he had done regarding “Okafor’s Law”, and developed it without giving him due credit.

He avers that the producer, however, went ahead to set March 31, as a release date for the movie, in spite of a demand letter sent to her, as well as a copyright infringement suit instituted.

NAN reports that “Okafor’s Law” stars: Richard Mofe Damijo, Toyin Aimakhu, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Ken Erics, Yvonne Jegede, Halima Abubakar, Gabriel Afolayan, Funke Bucknor among other Nollywood actors and actresses.

Oboli is a popular Nollywood Producer, actress, Director and script writer.

Nollywood Filmaker, Don Pedro Obaseki, Declares Intention To Run For Edo’s Governorship Seat

Nollywood filmmaker Don Pedro Obaseki on Thursday declared his intention to run for the Edo State Governorship saying that it time for his people to emerge from the dark abyss of tainted mafia-style politics in the state.

He has declared his intention to take-over from Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in 2016 in running the affairs of Edo state.
The ace broadcaster also signified his intention to seek nomination as the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Edo State Governorship Elections. He made this known in a statement made available to newsmen.
Read his full statement below:

Dear Friends, Sisters and Brothers. My name is DonPedro Osaro Agbonifo Obaseki.
I’m a bona fide son of Edo State. I live in Ward 7, Oredo LGA.
I herein, via this brief statement, signify my intention to seek nomination as the flag bearer of my party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2016 Edo State Governorship Elections.
After due and serial consultations with my immediate family, associates, friends, colleagues, as well as traditional, religious and civil leaders, I believe the time is nigh to Make Our Voices Emerge from the dark abyss of tainted mafia-style politics of our dear EDO.
Most importantly, I’ve sought and received, with utmost humility, the corporate Blessings/endorsements of the Elders Council of the Extended OBASEKI, OGBEIDE’OYO, BAZUAYE-EMEHI, & EZOMO Families (my paternal and maternal families) and these ceremonies will be placed in the public domain in a few days, across all mass media. As a child of Tradition, these endorsements are tangential to my aspirations and ambitions.
I beg you to join me in this arduous task. As the seeming youngest in the large field of perceived aspirants, I vision myself as the proverbial little DAVID in the clustered House of Jesse. Let’s write a brand new chapter in the chequered history of our Race. I beg you to join me to chart a new course for our Children and their Children’s Children.
We can do this. Together. Let’s M.O.V.E beyond the acrimonious bickering that put us back. Let’s M.O.V.E beyond the shame of the totemic “Motor-Park” democracy that envelopes our collective heritage. Let’s put EDO first.
In a few days, we shall launch our campaign to seek our party’s nomination, and the Mandate of our great people. God Bless Edo State. God Bless Nigeria. Omon’Oba n’Edo gható kpéré. Isé!

‘I’m Yet To Find My Wife’ – Nollywood Actor, Bryan Okwara

Handsome Nollywood actor, Bryan Okwara, is no doubt a lady’s man. His looks and dress sense have made him a hot cake to girls.
But despite these intimidating qualities most women pray to have in a man, he is still not married and the former Mr Nigeria said the reason for this is because he is yet to find his lost rib.
He spoke to Nigeriafilms.com on this and other issues:

What’s your definition of fashion?
My definition of fashion is 1, dress how you want to be addressed, 2, always be a gentle man, 3, dare
to be different, 4, exude confidence, 5, be original.
But you hardly wear native dresses

(Laughs), well, yeah, I just finished a campaign with Yomi Casuals and Sly Mone, I wore this Agbada, mehn, I’m killing it and he gave me a piece.

So, how many native wears do you have in your wardrobe?
Hmm, right now maybe four.

Why, don’t you support Nigerian fabrics?
It’s not that I don’t support Nigerian fabrics, it’s just about what is ready for me to wear, which goes with my brand. I wear natives of course. Like I said, I was on a campaign with Yomi Casual and native on Vogue fashion week in Port Harcourt, it was actually a native show. But naturally, I would rather wear a suit not because I have a preference, its something you are sooth in. If you wear something you are comfortable in, you will speak better, you will look better and act better. So, that’s my idea of an outfit.

Do you plan to cut your dreadlocks?
Well, you have to ask Kanu this question. If you are in the entertainment industry, different people pick different style, you pick different personality, so whatever goes with you, you go with it and if it does not go with you, don’t try to be somebody else.

When do you plan to settle down?
(Laughs), mehn, you guys just keep to your social media, you will know when the wedding bells will start ringing because this boy right here is going to the top and there is a saying that once a man has found a wife, has found a good thing, So hopefully I pray that some day that I find a good thing to go with.

Jonathan’s Govt. Didn’t Give Us $200m Nollywood Funds- Bank Of Industry

The Bank of Industry (BoI) has denied receiving $200 million Entertainment/Nollywood Fund from the former administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, for the development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

The bank described as untrue a news report calling for the probe of the bank on the premise that the former president had released the money to it, clarifying that the bank never received such money.

“The attention of the bank has been drawn to a news report titled “Probe Jonathan’s $200 million Nollywood Fund, Lari Williams tells Buhari” wherein Mr. Lari alluded to the domiciliation of $200 million with the Bank of Industry Limited for eventual disbursement to artists who are able to come up with viable business plans…”

Jonathan’s $200 Million Nollywood Fund Likely To Be Probed

A veteran thespian, Lari Williams, on Tuesday urged the government to inquire into the current state of the grant the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration gave to the entertainment sector. Williams told pressmen on Tuesday that he and others needed to know what had been disbursed and what had yet to be disbursed.

Williams added that a proper management of the sectors’ resources would help to keep it dynamic with the provision of requisite infrastructure and training schools for stage and movie performance. “There was a cash grant for the development of arts in Nigeria disbursed to the sector by the immediate past president but the practitioners do not know how the grant is being disbursed…”

Nollywood: The Story Behind Nigeria’s Domestic Movie Industry By Abba Makama

Despite having only 14 cinemas in a country of 170 million people, Nigeria’s film industry, dubbed “Nollywood”, churns out as many as 50 films a week, sometimes for as little as 18 million Naira a project. Many are released straight to DVD and sold cheaply on the streets for as low as 100 naira, with video rentals being the major source for people to get the opportunities to view such movies.

When it comes to sheer volume, the $5bn film industry makes more films than the US and is only rivalled by India, the world’s biggest movie industry.

So, how did Nigerian films become so popular?

Abba Makama has a story to tell from his angle and that of other video directors in the industry. What makes the Nigerian movie scene the third biggest in the world Behind Bollywood and Hollywood? what it entails, and what plans they all have for the nearest future . These Stories are truths that may inspire us to more greatness and more perfection because it is a major contributor to income for the nigerian and african populace from production, distribution and consumption.

Veteran Nollywood Actor, Bruno Iwuoha Goes Blind, Cries For Help

  • Nigerian Actor Chief Bruno Iwuoha Goes Blind, Battling Diabetes, Needs N3.5Million For Eyes Surgery

Another Nollywood actor needs help urgently to restore his sight.

Veteran actor Bruno Iwuoha was a guest on a radio station in Abuja recently where he opened up on his current battle with a life threatening disease.
The talented actor talked about his battle with diabetes and how he has been battling Glaucoma for years without money for corrective surgery.
Mr Iwuoha who said diabetes has claimed his sight told the host of Brekete Family Program on 104.5FM in Abuja that he never knew he had diabetes until a violent armed robbery attack that
landed him in hospital.

A series of test carried out on him revealed that he has diabetes and since then he has been managing it until the condition affected his sight.
Hear him:

“I’ve gone to so many places; within the country, outside the country for treatment, until finally…finally, the thing [diabetes] claimed one of my sight. As I look at you now, I’m using only one sight. They call that glaucoma. And gradually, it’s affecting the other one [eye]. So, naim make, apart from places…the people who call me atimes, both the little cash they can give me…drugs and all that…but I discovered that this thing [the illness] is a lifetime something.

And it has robbed me of the job [acting]. And now, if I get a script, it will be hard for me to read it very well. And if I read it, if I strain my eyes for so long, it would look as if someone would lead me around the house or anywhere I want to go because it will affect the only one [eye]. So that’s my problem.”
The actor said he needs the help of kind-hearted Nigerians because he has been referred to a US-based hospital where he is required to have N3.5million.

So far he has about N200,000.

He said he got to know that Jonathan gave AGN money but Ibinabo Fiberesima never assisted him with any money when he reached out to her.

To help Chief Bruno, please contact the Brekete Family at Suite F9, Sheriff Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja or Call +234-80-33-22 11-49, BBM PIN: 2BD26968
Thank you.

Comedians Are Richer Than Actors, You Can’t Compare The Pay – Ali Baba

Ali Baba while still speaking about his career and success at 50 has hinted that Nigerian comedians are more richer than Nigerian actors and here’s why;

Nigerian comedians make a lot of money than actors. You wouldn’t believe but let me tell you. You shoot a movie, it takes 4 months for the movie to be released and they get paid. There is hardly an actor that charges N1 million or N2 million per movie unless you are in the top end of the hierarchy such as RMD, Genevieve, and Omotola. But then, there are comedians that charges N800,000 or N1 million per event.

In four months, such comedian would have done maybe 30 events but because he doesn’t do a movie that is on cable TV that can be seen in Kenya, South Africa, and all across the country, people do not think he is making that kind of money. Actors shoot a movie and it takes There are quite a number of Nigerian comedians whose wives do not have a job but they still live large. A popular comedian would have performed at 6 to 8 different shows in a month before a Nollywood actor wraps up shoot on set of a movie.

Yoruba actor and film producer, Saheed Balogun has said the former president,Goodluck Jonathan treated entertainers like school children…According to Vanguard, in a recent chat with the actor, he decired piracy, saying he lost over 15 million naira on a recent movie..

We’re still looking to find who leaked it, but we don’t know yet. I lost over N15 million on that project. I’m still motivated to do more because it’s my dream. Soon, change will come to this country. Goodluck Jonathan treated entertainers like school-children. The last government was hosting us (Nollywood) as if they were hosting birthday parties for
kids.He said..

For one day, they never thought it fit to beg senators and members of the House of Representatives to pass appropriate laws on piracy “ I am seizing this opportunity to beg the new senators and House members who are in the committee in charge of culture to please pass relevant bills on entertainment. That is what they are elected to do, not to be shouting and jumping fence like they did the last time.”

John Okafor Doubts Buhari’s Support For Nollywood

Lagos – Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, popularly referred to as Mr Ibu, is worried the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari will not support the Nigerian film industry like the Jonathan-led outgoing administration.

He said that President Jonathan probably got his attention and we expected that they would work towards building a film village for the Actors Guild of Nigeria.

Mr Ibu added that the  place will have tourists  take a recreational tour, take photographs with actors and actresses just like Hollywood. He said with the new administration, the film village is a mirage.

IK Ogbonna’s Girlfriend Gushes ; There Are Plenty Stars But There Is Only One IK

Popular Nigerian Actor IK Ogbonna and Sonia Lareinaa have been making headlines a lot lately with their love which looks like a fairytale one as both couple keep gushing about their undying love for each other.
She got to speak with NigeriaFilms in a recent interview and revealed quite a number of things. Find the excerpt from the interview below;

Can we get to know who Sonia is and what she does?

I was born 19th January 1991 in a family of three, as only girl and the oldest child. I study at University of Belgrade in Republic of Serbia, At Faculty of Political Sciences – Department of Social Policy to be more specific. At the moment I am busy with my masters. I also do work of a translator because I fluently speak Five languages (does pidgin count too? laughs). From time to time I do modeling jobs, but I really don’t take them truly serious.
Where are you based, Nigeria and Colombia?

All my life I have been citizen of a world. I hardly lived in South America though. I was mostly based in Europe at relation France-Holland-Serbia because of my education. Lately route Europe-Nigeria became very frequent in my schedule.

What do you find fascinating about IK and why did you accept to date him?

We are too much alike. If we were from the same country I would seriously doubt that he might be my long lost twin brother (laughs). He knows how I breathe!

What was your parent’s reaction about you dating him?

They all adore him in my family because of his amazing personality and the fact that he treats me like a real man should. Every normal parent is happy with their children’s happiness.

Are you dating him for fun or you expect something serious from him like marriage?

There is very, very small circle of people I let come close to me. I don’t have time or energy to let myself be around too many people. Ik is my best friend and a very special part of me.

How will you feel if he ends up not marrying you, won’t you see it as a waste of time?

If someone is part of your destiny, nothing and none will be capable of changing it. In any other case every experience is a priceless blessing we learn from- if we are smart enough of course.

If Ik was not a star, would you have still accepted him?

I didn’t even know he was a star before I came to Nigeria. As you remember, I’m not Nigerian neither I lived in Nigeria. Beside, takes much more than a “star” to impress me. There are plenty stars but there is only one Ik.

Do you believe in long distance relationship?

As I said, if someone was meant for you, no other person or situation can possibly change that. In that case, distance can only work in your favour and help you realize some amazing things.

What is your perception about career women in marriages?
Personally I could never feel complete, satisfied, fulfilled or happy by sitting home 24/7. I’m very ambitious person, i love challenges, my mind works extremely fast, I’m restless business-minded woman and I don’t see how a healthy marriage can affect my personal progress. Your man should support you, advice you, motivate you, encourage you, be proud of you, help you grow into better person by each and every day not control you or lock you in the kitchen. Remember, you are his partner not his child or a maid. Only frustrated, insecure, weak men will try to stop their women from their own professional progress. That’s not love!
