Neighbours Defend Mum-Of-Two Arrested For ‘Stabbing Boyfriend To Death’

A mum-of-two has been arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly stabbing her partner to death.
The woman, who has been named locally as Elizabeth Hart-Browne, 27, was detained shortly after 11pm on Saturday night at her home.

Neighbours recalled hearing “screams” shortly before the police arrived and a pool of blood could be seen near to the flat in Ealing, west London, yesterday.

It is believed the woman stabbed her partner named by a neighbour as Stephen Rayner, inside before he later collapsed outside the property.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: “She’s a lovely girl, she is decent, all I know is if she
has done what she’s done there must have been a cause for it. There’s more than what it looks like, she wouldn’t just do this, he would have had to have done something. He was quite an abusive guy behind closed doors, she was a decent girl, that’s all I’ve got to say.”

Another neighbour, Patrick Meehan, 72, who has lived in the block of flats for 20 years, said: “At about half 11 I heard girls screaming.

“And it went on till 1am, I heard a lot of commotion between half 11 and 1am.

“It was out here and it was mostly a girl screaming, or children, maybe even young girls.

“It’s the first time this sort of thing has happened, never anything this serious, it’s a fairly stable community.

“We have some people who come here and drink and fight and are loud, but nothing to this extreme.

“I heard something on Friday night, some sort of noise below me, there was shouting but last night was more real, the screams were more real.

“But I thought it was local people just drunk from the pub, I didn’t get up to look.

“It’s very sad someone has lost their life and it is shocking for it to happen so close to home.”
Flowers were left at the scene yesterday in a tribute to the man.

She is due to appear in court today.

Woman, Neighbour Torture 16-Year-Old Housemaid With Iron

A woman, Fatima Williams, and her neighbour, Waliu Yusuf, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly brutalising a 16-year-old girl, identified only as Kemi, with a hot iron and electric cables.

Punch correspondent learnt that the Kemi was brought from Cotonou, Benin Republic.
She had been reportedly living with Williams, popularly called Alhaja, since January 2016 as a housemaid.

Williams’ apartment is on Soji Adepegba Close, Allen Avenue, Ikeja. It was gathered that the victim was allegedly tortured for not sweeping Williams’ compound last Thursday.

Punch Metro learnt that a resident informed the police and the suspects were arrested by the Ikeja Police Division on Friday, August 12.

A police source told Punch correspondent that the teenager had been admitted to the Police Cottage Hospital, Ikeja.

Kemi, who spoke with Punch correspondent in Yoruba, said, “On that day, Alhaja instructed me to sweep the compound. She also asked me to clean the windows and wash some clothes.

“I started with the washing and she went out. When she returned, she was angry that I had not swept the compound. She called the man to beat me up.”

Alhaja, a mother of four children who hails from Kwara State, said she got Yusuf to beat the girl for her obstinacy, adding that Kemi’s stubbornness had increased her (Alhaja’s) blood pressure.

She said, “The girl’s brother brought her to me on January 10, 2016. She usually stole things from the house. I kept reporting her to her brother and even asked him to come to pick her, but he refused; I got tired of the girl.

“She continued her rudeness and messed up the whole house. She also urinated on the bed. During all this trouble, my blood pressure got high. I had to use a BP machine in the house. I called and spoke to her like a child, but she would not listen. I usually gave her the food I ate. I gave her brother N40,000 in January.

“When she got me angry on that day, I was tired of beating her and I called Waliu (Yusuf). He was using an iron. As he beat her, she held his clothes and the iron injured her.”

Twenty-five-year-old Yusuf said he had wanted to scare the victim with the iron when it injured her.

He said, “The girl went into the kitchen and brought an insecticide, threatening to kill herself. I then tried to take the substance away from her. She began to struggle with me. I started flogging her and she held on to my clothes.

“Meanwhile, I was ironing some that time. I used the iron to scare her to leave my clothes. That was how the iron fell on her. I only wanted to scare her away.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters, Ikeja, said they would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

He said, “This is a case of child trafficking, child labour and child abuse as well as assault occasioning harm. The suspects will be arraigned in a court of law.”

Family of 6 die in Lagos fire

Tragedy struck  yesterday after a family of seven were roasted in a fire that engulfed a building at Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos.

However, doctors at the Intensive Care Unit  of  Gbagada General Hospital are battling to save the life of the only survivor, eight-year-old Chidinma, the seventh member of the family who sustained serious burns.

Among those who lost their lives in the inferno, whose cause could not be immediately ascertained, were Mr. Kelechi Ali; his wife, Nkiru;  Onoja, their baby boy of about three weeks old; their son, Favour, of about three years old.

Also killed in the fire were Onoja’s mother, who was on a visit to care for her nursing daughter, and two other children, aged  eight and ten years respectively, who were said to have visited for the summer holiday.

The grandmother,  said to be in her 60s, had reportedly concluded plans to return to her base at Nsukka , Enugu State yesterday before the unfortunate incident.

The fire, it  was gathered, started in Ali’s self-contained apartment located on 21, Michael Ogun street, Obele Lawanson, at about 11pm Tuesday while the family was asleep.

It reportedly raged for over an hour before the arrival of the  fire service. Their shout for help alerted other residents but no one heeded the call.

Vanguard gathered that their charred remains were recovered in different positions by men of  Lagos State Fire Service.

The charred remains of the father was said to have been mangled together with two of his children, while that of his wife was seen with her little baby on her chest.

When Vanguard visited the scene yesterday, those on rescue were still sighted clearing the debris.

An eyewitness who identified herself as Abure Hanna, said:   “A few minutes into my sleep, I heard voices which sounded like people were quarrelling.

‘’Later, I heard shout  of fire from  the next compound.  I ran out and started calling neighbours to come and help. I think the fire had been on for  about 30 minutes before I came out. The fire service came late to the scene after the fire had been doused by residents.”

Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, stated that the family members could have been rescued had neighbours went for their rescue on time.

“Everybody stayed put in their houses even when the family was shouting for help. This is because of the lingering quarrel between the family and their neighbours.

‘’As you can see , there are  three houses  in the compound but the middle one occupied by the Onojas was the one affected.  This is not ordinary because even the connecting wires to other buildings were not affected.“

Traditional ruler breaks down in tears

The traditional ruler of  Surulere, High Chief Kareem Jinadu  Awoyemi, broke down in tears as he arrived the scene, blaming other neighbours for not rising to the help of the affected family.

Awoyemi said: “There are issues brought to me that occupants of the three buildings in the compound were never in good terms.

‘’This is just too much. How could this type of thing escalate to this level when the victims had neighbours?.“ At this point, he stopped, shook his head and burst into tears again before leaving the scene.

Attempt to burn other buildings foiled

When news of the neglect by other neighbours filtered round, some aggrieved persons suspected to be members of the deceased family attempted to burn down the two  other buildings whose tenants were accused of turning deaf ears to their relatives’ cry for help.

Attempt by some sympathisers to stop this move resulted in an altercation that almost led to a fight. It took the intervention of policemen from Surulere Division, led by the DPO, Mr Monday Agbonika, to arrest the situation.

But when Vanguard approached him at the scene, he declined comments, referring Vanguard to the State Police Public Relations Officer.

One of the aggrieved relatives who refused to disclose his identity said:  “The family went to the market yesterday to get items for the mother-in-law as their tradition demands to celebrate the arrival of the new born baby after one month of Omugwo.

‘’This morning, they were supposed to go to the village, the man has already purchased bus tickets and now they are dead. The father was a trader who sold sewing materials on Lagos Island, while his wife, is a parishioner at Saint Mulumba Catholic Church, Lawanson, Lagos.’’

Donations for survivor

Meanwhile,  a man was seen collecting money from  sympathisers . When asked what the money was meant for, the man who spoke on condition of anonymity, said : “We are donating for the treatment of the little girl that is in the hospital. Chidinma (survivor ) is in critical condition in the hospital and we are doing all we can to ensure her survival. Doctors said she has a fifty-fifty chance of survival.’’

Lagos State Fire Service Director, Rasaq Fadipe, said fire trucks were deployed to the scene immediately the distress call was received.
